    About Alex R.

Alex is a Boston-based guitarist and educator. At the age of 17, Alex turned his musical interests from classical violin to bluegrass guitar, and has yet to reconsider. After completing an undergraduate biology degree at Cornell University in 2011, he returned to the vibrant Boston music bluegrass scene, studying privately with Berklee professor John McGann. In 2014, Alex started the folk duo, No Bones About It, which has performed around the northeast, including performances at the Freshgrass Music Festival and Club Passim, as well as completing a country-wide tour of New Zealand. In March 2016, Alex joined the April Verch Band, with whom he tours around the globe.

Alex is methodical and relaxed. He is a professional musician and a through and tech savvy teacher. I especially like the fact that he sends videos for the homework. I am actually learning how to play the guitar. Something that I could not do on my own.

Alex is a terrific instructor, who adjusts lessons based on what the student wants to accomplish. For example, my goals include learning the instruments (baritone uke in octave mandolin tuning and concert uke in mandolin tuning), fingerpicking, playing both melody lines and chords, being able to determine what chords to use without sheet music. So we work on music theory and ear training a lot, as well as learning tunes. Very good instructor who is both flexible and knowledgeable...highly recommend him to others.

    Experience

    Private Teacher

    Sep, 2011 - Present

    Self

I have been teaching private lessons to adults and young adults for more than a decade. This has included in-person and virtual, for long and short durations depending on the needs of the student. I have had students in it for the long haul to try and make steady progress, and also those preparing for specific events who need a little guidance. I am always happy to discuss goals and methods in advance.
