Hi! I'm Alex. I'm a professional freelance jazz trumpet player and music teacher. I am based in New York City, but I used to live in New Orleans for 7 years, where I worked as a professional trumpet player specializing in New Orleans style jazz. I led a band called the Messy Cookers Jazz Band, and we played at music venues, restaurants, and private functions all around New Orleans and the south. We were invited to play at the French Quarter Festival in 2017 and last year, we played at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. When I wasn't leading my band, I played many gigs with other bands around town. I not only love playing music, but I also love teaching music! I was a band director for the Archdiocese of New Orleans for 3 years, teaching elementary band at different schools in the area. I have also taught privately and was invited to be a guest artist instructor at the Straight 8 Jazz Camp in Dallas, TX in 2017 and 2019. I moved to New York in 2019 to pursue a Master's of Music Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Since my graduation, I have taught 3rd-5th grade general music for students with special needs at a private school in New York City, and I continue to teach private trumpet and trombone lessons. I also keep a busy schedule as a working performing jazz musician in New York and the northeast. When I teach trumpet, I love working with students who want to improve their technique and their endurance. When I was living in New Orleans, I played more than 10 gigs a week, so I learned many great ways to improve my sound and my endurance. I also love working with students who might be interested in jazz. I can help you with the style, improvisation, and technique!

Alex is a well-prepared, patient, and encouraging instructor. As a beginning trumpet student, I was self-conscious about my ability but Alex has helped me feel comfortable not only as a trumpet player, but as a musician. I would highly recommend working with him!

Not only is Alex Owen an exciting jazz trumpet player--well versed in the Swing, New Orleans and modern jazz traditions--he is also an excellent teacher. My lessons with him are well organized and he makes them enjoyable. He is patient and explains things well. Terrific instructor.
