My teaching philosophy: I have been helping students discover ease and joy in singing for over ten years, and in many different styles. Each journey is different, but I am certain I can help you accomplish your goals. No two voices are alike, and we will work together to discover your particular strengths. Expect to laugh and have some fun along the way!!! Working with the physical structure of your face and body, we'll uncover ways to free you FROM yourself. Many bad vocal habits are learned through everyday life - together we can identify these to bring you closer to the optimal function of your voice. I will provide a foundation of knowledge for effective breathing and posture, as well as fill your 'toolbox' with many practical methods to alleviate tensions and encourage optimal resonance. As I am an active professional singer, I teach largely through demonstration accompanied by easily understandable technical language aimed to resonate with the student's natural sense memory and vocabulary. These are methods I have practiced myself over many years as a professional singer at the world's great opera houses, and I know they will help serve your artistry and desire to be expressive, confident and engaging to an audience of 1 or 10,000. Alex Lawrence is an active professional operatic and concert baritone based in NYC and has enjoyed an international performing career for the past 7 years since his debut at the Theater Basel, Switzerland and subsequently as an ensemble member of the Zurich Opera House, from 2012-2016. He has enjoyed performing major roles with some of the world's most prestigious opera and theater companies including the Zurich Opera, Theater Basel, The Glimmerglass Festival, The Lucerne Festival, The Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Tanglewood Festival, The Ravinia Festival, The Vancouver Opera, and many more. He has participated in top international Young Artist Programs including the Glimmerglass Festival, The Zurich Opera and the Ravinia Festival Steans Institute for Singers. Alex is a graduate of Northwestern University (B.M. Voice '07) and the prestigious Academy of Vocal Arts (A.D. '11), and is a recipient of the annual Lenore Annenberg Fellowship in the Arts. He has been a top prizewinner in several major international competitions, including the Opera Index Foundation, The Gerda Lissner Foundation and the Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation. He was a semi-finalist at Operalia, 2014. Alex Lawrence, Baritone, is represented by Zemsky/Green Artists management, one of the leading classical vocal agencies in the world. Alex's teaching influences include his mentor's Patricia McCaffrey, Arthur Levy, both major voice instructors in the New York City classical vocal scene.

Alex is a brilliant man and a terrific professional singer who has incorporated and consolidated correct and admirable vocal knowledge and has an insight and perception into voices and the root cause of issues and the path to improving a voice. His understanding of the uniqueness of each voice with an underlying bel canto, vocally scientific and yet musically based methodology is outstanding. I would trust Alex with any singer and I know any voice type in any type of repertoire, musical theatre and jazz and even pop, would benefit greatly. he is a deep thinker, but an outgoing and generous individual with great patience. I admire him greatly and I know he is already an outstanding teacher, though his professional career is giving him a great balance, and a good insight into the world each singer is venturing into. A uniquely qualified person.

I have really enjoyed working with Alex-- He has given me some great tools and guidance for working on technique in a healthy way, and I have left every lesson excited to practice and apply what we work on. He always challenges me in a very constructive manner and makes lessons a safe place to take risks and experiment. As someone who has a degree in voice and has gone through a few teachers, I would definitely recommend him, weather you are a beginner or a more studied singer.

Not only is Alex a kind, patient, and encouraging teacher, but he also presents valuable technical information in a clear and comprehensible manner. I leave each lesson feeling vocally fresh and with new nuggets of vocal wisdom to think about during the week. I also feel that I can apply the vocal technique Alex teaches to the many different genres of music that I sing (opera, musical theater, gospel, etc.) Would highly recommend Alex!! He’s a gem!
