School of Rock teaches guitar, bass, vocals, keyboards, drums and combines weekly private music lessons and group band rehearsals to prepare students to take the stage in front of live audiences in an authentic concert setting.
To date our students have played thousands of concerts, to more than 100,000 people, at such legendary venues as CBGB's, The Trocadero, The Knitting Factory, The Whiskey, The Roxy, The Experience Music Project, The Big Easy and BB King's Blues Club in Times Square. We have also had the great fortune to be able to perform at music festivals from Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits, to Zappanale in Bad Doberan, Germany.
We are a music company owned and operated by music teachers and musicians who teach for the love of music. We are here to help our neighbors when it comes to purchasing an instrument, or selecting a teacher who can meet their needs.
Originally from Minnesota, Prince Music Company opened a music studio in New Orleans, LA and many students came through this location. We taught children as young as six, to adults in their 50's and 60's. In turn, New Orleans impressed us with music that originated in the city like jazz, bounce rap, and swamp pop. The greatest thing we took from this amazing city were the instruments the jazz artists of the south swear by. It was then that we decided to open a studio in Minneapolis where these instruments and music lessons could be enjoyed by our home town community.
Alec started out by teaching our 5 yr old Colton how to play drums. Through the progressions, Colton has really enjoyed playing drums and Alec has a great technique in how he teaches.
I taught myself how to play the basics on drums. I was impressed with how Alec was teaching Colton. I decided that it was time to expand my horizons and get more instruction. I have played for about 1 year now and Alec has helped me with technique and skills. He has challenged me to learn different styles of music to help me become better. Alec is very talented and very "clean and solid" when playing drums. Alec has a way of teaching that works for young students and older students. I would recommend Alec to anyone wanting to learn drums.
Alec teaches drum for my 8-year-old son, Carlin. Carlin had taken piano for a couple of months at age 6 and had NO drumming experience. Carlin was also under the impression that learning drums would be 'easy'. :) Alec patiently worked with Carlin and kept him motivated after he realized it would take work and practice to get better. Alec also helped us, as parents, to understand what type of equipment we would need since we had no experience with drums either!
Alec is a perfect combination of the fun-cool role model and the patient-but-persistent teacher. Especially for our impulsive, hyper son. :)
Growing up in a family of drummers, I decided it was my turn to chip wood. I also saw how much fun my husband and sons had taking lessons from Alec and learning their fav songs. Alec has a laid back approach and is extremely patient. I quickly learned my first song and have been inspired ever since. Alec has a way of believing in his students that is rare. He is a talented musician and his love for music clearly shows in his teaching. Alec is kind, encouraging and easily liked. He is also teaching my 5 yr son drum and my 9 yr old guitar. They like Alec and have fun with lessons. My sons are high energy and he knows how to handle them well and they learn! My boys have started playing the song, Seven Nation Army, together. My 5yr old can now play I Love Rock and Roll on his own. So cool to watch the progress! I highly recommend Alec to anyone young or young at heart.+ Read More
My son (12 now) started taking lessons from Alec about a year ago after his other teacher stopped giving lessons. Alec made the transition to a new teacher easy. Alec works really well with kids, and he's a patient and fun teacher. My son LOVES playing the drums, and I know it's partly because of Alec's easy-going manner and knack for helping my son pick out songs with the right challenge level--anything from Metallica to The Commodores! Alec also came to our house to teach my son how to tune his drum. He's reliable, friendly, and an all-around great teacher.+ Read More
At age 7, we brought my son to Alec for lessons. Even though he could barely touch the ground with his feet, within a month, Alec had him playing Seven Nation Army and LOVING it! A year later, he's in a kid-centered Rock band, playing the Beatles and much more!
Alec taught him how to play his sister's favorite song, so he could tap out the beat while she sang. He also taught him Jingle Bells at Christmas time, all at my son's request.
Alec is attentive, patient and supportive. He challenges, while being a confidence-booster; just what my son needs more of.
We hired Alec for the sole purpose of getting our son enough mallet and percussion know-how so that he would have the option to pick "percussion" in 6th Grade Band (interesting school requirement). In about 3/4th of a school year's worth of one lesson per week with Alec, our son was able to go into tryouts last night and be successful. The band teacher had no idea that our son a. does not play the piano or b. had not taking lessons for much longer than what he has. Our son got the choice to pick percussion. It's a bonus that our son really enjoys Alec; Alec is a very fun and kind person. He is perfect for little boys with short attention spans and good energy!+ Read More
Alec is a very persistent yet kind instructor. Our 10 year old son looks forward to his time each with with Alec and is learning a lot on drums/mallets in a short amount of time. We went to watch Alec play at a gig in Minneapolis recently and that experience serves as an added 'carrot' and incentive to motivate our child to practice.+ Read More
My 9 year old son is doing great - and really looks forward to his lessons with Alec!
Our son is really enjoying his drum lessons with Alec, and he's learned a lot already in the last month!
