Because there were never enough local productions to perform in, (ie; "Annie Get your Gun" , " The fortune teller" , " How to Succeed....," " Gypsy", " The Mikado", " Once upon a Matress",
"Brigadoon", "La Boheme", " Kismet", and " The Secret Garden", I started my own musical theater company on Whidbey Island, where I directed double cast productions of "The Sound of Music", " Amahl and the Night Visitors", " Grease", and "Hair" highlights, then in the Netherlands, "Oliver"," You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" and the revue " One Hundred Years of Broadway". musical director (vocal coach) for high caliber Dutch high school musicals " Beauty and the Beast" and " the Newsies", I have helped many students, from beginners to professional, prepare excellent quality monologues and musical numbers for auditions, contests, and other memorable performances from the heart making this larger than life art form as true to life as possible.

Due to my maternal grandfather's career as a Chicago vaudeville orchestra leader, from early childhood, the performing arts have been in my blood. Starting to study classical flute at age 12, then playing in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras and taking professional jazz/classical flute workshops/master classes, I've been teaching and playing all styles of flute music professionally since my 20's.
Vocal study began at age 15 with some great artists/educators in SF, Seattle, and Europe, including Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Broadway singer Adrian West, David Tigner- SF Opera, Davida Kagan-Seattle Opera, and Roland Wyatt-
Manhattan Transfer coach /NY Academy of Dramatic Arts. Through many years of teaching experience, I've developed a very successful, uniquely simple 8 part method to help cross cultural individuals/groups of all ages , styles, and levels, sing optimally from their hearts. The necessary basic vocal techniques can be taught effectively in 4 to 8 lessons, though the learning process takes longer and can continue throughout one's lifetime.
With a BA in Theater Arts from SFSU, and over 50 years directing, acting, and musical experience, including the last 15 years also working successfully as an ESL educator, I have gained the confidence to help almost any student achieve their personal and/or professional goals.
Successfully created and taught the first English speaking lesson plan for two Dutch 8th and 9th grade gifted bilingual students.
In the Netherlands I taught classes in pop singing, vocal technique, musical theater, and flute as well as private voice and flute lessons in several local community music, theater schools. I also coached the leads in the most nationally acclaimed musical theater high school in the Netherlands- (productions- "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Newsies").
Throughout Europe and the USA I have toured since the 70's as a jazz vocalist flutist, as well as performed in and/or directed a myriad of, choirs, chamber music groups, orchestras, and theatrical productions. All my performing and teaching combined has provided me with the tools to help hundreds of students to achieve their personal and/or professional goals.

Excellent teacher on the subject
Wonderfully encouraging and knowledgeable.
Abby is an excellent teacher. She tried her best to help me understand English by providing me examples, explaining detail, revising grammar, and so on. Besides teaching me English, she shared her own experiences with me. She told me how people can get through difficulties.
She is not only a real teacher in English, but also in life.
Abby van Spronsen is an excellent teacher, who has helped me develop my voice and musical style before and during my Conservatory studies. She really takes time for her students and because of her musical background she knows about many different styles, from jazz to pop to musical and even classical music. She knows how to use this knowledge well in her classes and loves to teach, which makes her a very inspiring voice teacher. I have learned a lot during the time that I took classes from Abby.+ Read More

I have played music with Abby for over 30 years. She is enthusiastic about her musical ideas for a performance;she is hard working before and during rehearsals; she enjoys people and interacts with them in a friendly and concerned manner. I have heard some of her music students perform and observe that she has imparted these skills to her students based on the performances I heard. I highly recommend her for any teaching position she aspired to as I believe she would carry these attributes into any teaching situation she encountered.+ Read More
