At age 12, I wanted to play piccolo in a marching band. though I was soon to be inspired by the amazing young musicians of the Seattle Youth Symphony and camp Orchestras under Maestro Vilem Sokol. Then thrilled to join them after having the good fortune of training with the then Seattle Symphony flute/piccolo players- Sidney and Adele Zeitlin, I began as a classical flute and voice major at WWSU in Bellingham.
My growing attraction to theater, then jazz, led me to Seattle UW San Francisco S U drama departments, while studying and playing every improvisational style of music from Brazilian to free form and pop/rock with many artists such as Paul Horn, Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Chuck Sher (Sher Music publisher), touring with renowned bebop vocalist, Jon Hendricks from the west coast to NYC,

Since then, I have performed voice, flute, and picollo in my own and others' numerous classical, jazz, pop, and theater ensembles, for over 45 years, teaching flute and voice since age 17 at SF's Blue Bear School of (pop/rock/and jazz) Music and public/private schools in USA as well as the Netherlands.

Emphasizing freedom of expression built on a solid knowledge of good technique, tonal color, intonation, music theory, and ear training exercises, develop my flute students in conjunction with choosing a repertoire to use and expand on each student's individual musical tastes.

About Abby G.

IMPORTANT NOTICES: AS much as I have enjoyed my Minnesota students, PLEASE NOTE that I am moving away from Mn. winters to the Phoenix Az. area at the end of September 2019 when I will be taking students ONLINE ONLY UNTIL November 2019, then my home studio will reopen.

** Because my private lessons are sporadically scheduled between other teaching, all lessons for age 12 and over are a minimum of one hour.

Due to my maternal grandfather's career as a Chicago vaudeville orchestra leader, from early childhood, the performing arts have been in my blood. Starting to study classical flute at age 12, then playing in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras and taking professional jazz/classical flute workshops/master classes, I've been teaching and playing all styles of flute music professionally since my 20's.

Vocal study began at age 15 with some great artists/educators in SF, Seattle, and Europe, including Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Broadway singer Adrian West, David Tigner- SF Opera, Davida Kagan-Seattle Opera, and Roland Wyatt- Manhattan Transfer coach /NY Academy of Dramatic Arts. Through many years of teaching experience, I've developed a very successful, uniquely simple 8 part method to help cross cultural individuals/groups of all ages , styles, and levels, sing optimally from their hearts. The necessary basic vocal techniques can be taught effectively in 4 to 8 lessons (depending on one's previous experience), though integrating the technique into your own style can take longer and usually continues throughout one's lifetime.

With a BA in Theater Arts from San Francisco State University, and over 50 years directing, acting, and musical experience, including the last 15 years also working successfully as an ESL educator, I have gained the confidence to help almost any student achieve their educational and/or professional goals.

Abby is an excellent teacher. She tried her best to help me understand English by providing me examples, explaining detail, revising grammar, and so on. Besides teaching me English, she shared her own experiences with me. She told me how people can get through difficulties.
She is not only a real teacher in English, but also in life.

Abby van Spronsen is an excellent teacher, who has helped me develop my voice and musical style before and during my Conservatory studies. She really takes time for her students and because of her musical background she knows about many different styles, from jazz to pop to musical and even classical music. She knows how to use this knowledge well in her classes and loves to teach, which makes her a very inspiring voice teacher. I have learned a lot during the time that I took classes from Abby.

Herewith I state that in the last years I had the pleasure and honour to work together with Abby. She supported me by teaching voice lessons as a lead singer in a Dutch pop band. Furthermore I joined her acting classes for several years to perform in musicals, also directed by Abby, as an actor and dancer. She has been really important for me to develop my talents and succeeded by her own very constructive and pleasurable way of teaching !!

Having lived abroad for many years, she is intimately familiar with the problems of developing fluency in a second language. She is a real people-person and is able to connect with any student that comes her way.

Abby is my colleague and has been teaching for many years. Her experience in teaching music and voice has made her a caring, encouraging and dedicated teacher. She has the patience and interest in her students to gain their respect, friendship and collaborative learning. As an ESL teacher, Abby has the necessary skills and knowledge to teach our new English speaking students. They will be prepared for useful conversations, curiousity towards the language and the fearlessness to speak freely.

Music Performance · In studio

I have played music with Abby for over 30 years. She is enthusiastic about her musical ideas for a performance;she is hard working before and during rehearsals; she enjoys people and interacts with them in a friendly and concerned manner. I have heard some of her music students perform and observe that she has imparted these skills to her students based on the performances I heard. I highly recommend her for any teaching position she aspired to as I believe she would carry these attributes into any teaching situation she encountered.
