As the amazed grand-daughter of David Smason, a successful vaudeville Orchestra leader, I have enjoyed many years of educational and professional experiences as an actress, teacher, and director in venues of all sizes. Besides performing leading and supporting roles in over 30 productions, including Suzie-" Wait Until Dark", Rosemary- "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying", Miss Mazeppa-"Gypsy", Lalume " Kismet", I also performed and/or staged several original reviews such as SF's " The Distractions", " On Being Female", and " The Van Spronsen Variety Showcase". Directing/coaching "The Sound of Music", multiple productions of "Amahl and the Night Visitors" and "Your a Good Man Charlie Brown" leading orchestras, choirs, and workshops for churches, schools and communities has given me a strong appreciation for artistic collaboration. earning a BA in Theater Arts from SFSU, all ages and levels, comic to tragic, specializing in musicals, I have successfully coached many students in accents, diction, vocal projection, stage and film acting, improvisation, and the art of auditioning. I have found nothing in life that is more absorbing, all encompassing of an individual's unique gifts, and FUN than the art of acting. To help build each student up to their greatest potential is my ultimate goal and I look forward to being a co-explorer of your untapped imagination!
I look forward to seeing my students grow in confidence and creativity as they use their own unique selves to become someone else in believable ways.

Due to my maternal grandfather's career as a Chicago vaudeville orchestra leader, from early childhood, the performing arts have been in my blood. Starting to study classical flute at age 12, then playing in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras and taking professional jazz/classical flute workshops/master classes, I've been teaching and playing all styles of flute music professionally since my 20's.
Vocal study began at age 15 with some great artists/educators in SF, Seattle, and Europe, including Bobby McFerrin, Mark Murphy, Broadway singer Adrian West, David Tigner- SF Opera, Davida Kagan-Seattle Opera, and Roland Wyatt- Manhattan Transfer coach /NY Academy of Dramatic Arts. Through many years of teaching experience, I've developed a very successful, uniquely simple 8 part method to help cross cultural individuals/groups of all ages , styles, and levels, sing optimally from their hearts. The necessary basic vocal techniques can be taught effectively in 4 to 8 lessons (depending on one's previous experience), though integrating the technique into your own style can take longer and usually continues throughout one's lifetime.
With a BA in Theater Arts from San Francisco State University, and over 50 years directing, acting, and musical experience, including the last 15 years also working successfully as an ESL educator, I have gained the confidence to help almost any student achieve their educational and/or professional goals.
Besides teaching multi-cultural refugees in the Netherlands 2000-2005, I successfully created and taught the first English speaking lesson plan for two Dutch 8th and 9th grade gifted bilingual high school students 2006 -2015.
Since 2017, English, public speaking, and math teacher for Best Brains LEarning Center students in Minnesota, age 3 - 14.
In the USA- (Seattle, Wa., S.F., Cal., and Apple Valley Mn.,) I have taught voice, musical theater, acting, and ESL from 2018 to the present. 1) directed "Amahl and the Night Visitors" 3X, "Grease" 2X, "Hair", "the Sound of Music", 2) several church/community revues, choirs, and orchestras, 3) jazz and classical ensembles.
In the Netherlands (2000 to 2015), I taught classes and private lessons in pop singing, vocal technique, musical theater, and flute in several local community music and theater schools. I also produced/directed "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown" three times (1X in English, 2X in Dutch), coached all leads (including 2 private students cast as Belle) in Nordik High School (nationally acclaimed for musical theater in the Netherlands), productions- "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Newsies".
Throughout Europe and the USA I have toured since the 70's as a jazz vocalist flutist, as well as performed in dozens of, choirs, chamber music groups, orchestras, and theatrical productions. All performing arts experiences have provided me with the tools to help hundreds of students to achieve their personal and/or professional goals.

Excellent teacher on the subject
Wonderfully encouraging and knowledgeable.
Abby is an excellent teacher. She tried her best to help me understand English by providing me examples, explaining detail, revising grammar, and so on. Besides teaching me English, she shared her own experiences with me. She told me how people can get through difficulties.
She is not only a real teacher in English, but also in life.
Abby van Spronsen is an excellent teacher, who has helped me develop my voice and musical style before and during my Conservatory studies. She really takes time for her students and because of her musical background she knows about many different styles, from jazz to pop to musical and even classical music. She knows how to use this knowledge well in her classes and loves to teach, which makes her a very inspiring voice teacher. I have learned a lot during the time that I took classes from Abby.Show More

Herewith I state that in the last years I had the pleasure and honour to work together with Abby. She supported me by teaching voice lessons as a lead singer in a Dutch pop band. Furthermore I joined her acting classes for several years to perform in musicals, also directed by Abby, as an actor and dancer. She has been really important for me to develop my talents and succeeded by her own very constructive and pleasurable way of teaching !!Show More

Abby is my colleague and has been teaching for many years. Her experience in teaching music and voice has made her a caring, encouraging and dedicated teacher. She has the patience and interest in her students to gain their respect, friendship and collaborative learning. As an ESL teacher, Abby has the necessary skills and knowledge to teach our new English speaking students. They will be prepared for useful conversations, curiousity towards the language and the fearlessness to speak freely.Show More
I have played music with Abby for over 30 years. She is enthusiastic about her musical ideas for a performance;she is hard working before and during rehearsals; she enjoys people and interacts with them in a friendly and concerned manner. I have heard some of her music students perform and observe that she has imparted these skills to her students based on the performances I heard. I highly recommend her for any teaching position she aspired to as I believe she would carry these attributes into any teaching situation she encountered.Show More
