Abbey is the real deal. She is the musician’s musician, the teacher’s teacher. As an instructor, she brings enthusiasm, patience, and thoughtfulness to every lesson. Coming into her tutorage as an intermediate level student, she has pushed and inspired me to be a more thoughtful performer and composer. Abbey draws from her deep well of theory and technique to create very practical exercises to fit one’s individual needs. I highly recommend her instruction for students of any level.

Abbey is a great musician and she's everything you could want in a music teacher: inspiring, patient, thorough, and absolutely aware of just who she's teaching and what and how that student needs to learn. She's the best.

I highly recommend Abbey to the serious bass player. Highly qualified with a Master's Degree, and with a natural talent for teaching, Abbey is one of the best teachers I've ever seen and motivates me to do my best. Always making sure you understand what's being taught and tailoring the lessons to your individual needs and aspirations. Abbey can find problems even you might not be aware of and helps work out a solution.

    Experience

    Online Learning Coordinator

    Apr, 2020 - Present

    SRJO Jazz Scholars

The Jazz Scholars is a program funded by the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra which brings music coaches into Seattle public schools. Since the pandemic, all in-person learning has been moved to audio/video lessons from home. It has been my job to organize from scratch a new way to get students their lessons with coaches. I worked with the public school teachers to choose the students most likely to benefit from one-on-one online lessons, as well as connected the coach who would be able to work with that student the best. Additionally, I have been coordinating stand-alone pre-recorded videos and instructional packets, made by our coaches, that are available to the JS students and any student in who needs them.

    History of Jazz TA

    Sep, 2018 - Jun, 2019

    University of Washington

As the TA for History of Jazz, I organized and created worksheets, study guides, and fielded students' questions, created engaging essay topics, as well as gave extensive feedback on papers. The class was geared toward non-musicians so I had to completely re-work how I think about and explain musical topics to create an effective explanation to students.

    Jazz Scholars Coach

    May, 2017 - Present

    SRJO Jazz Scholars

The Jazz Scholars is a program funded by the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra which brings music coaches into Seattle public schools. As a coach, I worked to run jazz band rehearsals, teach masterclasses, run clinics, and give one on one lessons to students in middle and high schools.

    Private Bass Teacher

    Jan, 2009 - Present

    self-employed

I have spent the last decade honing my skills as a teacher, focusing on what each student needs instead of what I want them to learn in that moment. As a teacher, I create exercises, etudes, lesson plans, and homework assignments for all of my students. I create an individual path for each student, which allows for their fullest potential as a musician.
