Abbey B is a multi-faceted double and electric bassist in Seattle, WA. She is a member of many musical scenes in Seattle’s music community, including the improvised, rock, classical, and jazz spheres. In addition to playing in a variety of groups, she also has a band of her own, Rae, which features her compositions and group improvisation.

Abbey has performed and recorded with a variety of artists including Jonathan Wilson, Jackson Browne, La Luz, Macklemore, Myrkur, Thousands, Red Ribbon, and Cassandra Jenkins. In addition to recording, she plays in a variety of groups around town including with Wayne Horvitz, The Seattle Modern Orchestra, Tomo Nakayama, and Great Spiders.

Outside of performing and recording, she teaches private lessons, as well as coaches through the Jazz Scholars program and the Jazz Night School.

Abbey holds a master's degree in Jazz and Improvised Music and a bachelor’s of music in Double Bass Performance from the University of Washington.

I like to teach through doing. Theory is a very important part of music, and it's best introduced with concrete examples that make sense to your fingers and your ears first.

I prefer to teach toward a varying level of goals. They can be focused (learn a song/play in tune) or very broad (become more aware of different styles/start a band).

I like to keep lessons positive and encouraging, highlighting the good but never ignoring things that need work.

Abbey is the real deal. She is the musician’s musician, the teacher’s teacher. As an instructor, she brings enthusiasm, patience, and thoughtfulness to every lesson. Coming into her tutorage as an intermediate level student, she has pushed and inspired me to be a more thoughtful performer and composer. Abbey draws from her deep well of theory and technique to create very practical exercises to fit one’s individual needs. I highly recommend her instruction for students of any level.

Abbey is a great musician and she's everything you could want in a music teacher: inspiring, patient, thorough, and absolutely aware of just who she's teaching and what and how that student needs to learn. She's the best.

I highly recommend Abbey to the serious bass player. Highly qualified with a Master's Degree, and with a natural talent for teaching, Abbey is one of the best teachers I've ever seen and motivates me to do my best. Always making sure you understand what's being taught and tailoring the lessons to your individual needs and aspirations. Abbey can find problems even you might not be aware of and helps work out a solution.

Abbey is very professional in her teaching and conduct. She is also extremely patient with beginners, as she was with my (then) 12-year old son. It has been a privilege for my son to have Abbey introduce the instrument to him!

Online Learning Coordinator
Apr 2020 - Present

SRJO Jazz Scholars

The Jazz Scholars is a program funded by the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra which brings music coaches into Seattle public schools. Since the pandemic, all in-person learning has been moved to audio/video lessons from home. It has been my job to organize from scratch a new way to get students their lessons with coaches. I worked with the public school teachers to choose the students most likely to benefit from one-on-one online lessons, as well as connected the coach who would be able to work with that student the best. Additionally, I have been coordinating stand-alone pre-recorded videos and instructional packets, made by our coaches, that are available to the JS students and any student in who needs them.

The Jazz Scholars is a program funded by the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra which brings music coaches into Seattle public schools. As a coach, I worked to run jazz band rehearsals, teach masterclasses, run clinics, and give one on one lessons to students in middle and high schools.

Private Bass Teacher
Jan 2009 - Present

self-employed

I have spent the last decade honing my skills as a teacher, focusing on what each student needs instead of what I want them to learn in that moment. As a teacher, I create exercises, etudes, lesson plans, and homework assignments for all of my students. I create an individual path for each student, which allows for their fullest potential as a musician.

History of Jazz TA
Sep 2018 - Jun 2019

University of Washington

As the TA for History of Jazz, I organized and created worksheets, study guides, and fielded students' questions, created engaging essay topics, as well as gave extensive feedback on papers. The class was geared toward non-musicians so I had to completely re-work how I think about and explain musical topics to create an effective explanation to students.
