Dr. Aaron Z. is a percussionist, educator, and arranger based in Toledo, Ohio. He currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Music at the University of Toledo where he directs the newly formed Steel Band and teaches classes in Ethnomusicology, and Jazz History. He also maintains a private studio of concert percussion, marching percussion, and drum set students of all ages.
As a percussionist, drummer, and pannist, Dr. Z. has performed throughout the midwest including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Toledo Museum of Art, and the Iowa and Ohio days of percussion. He has also performed internationally at the Percussive Arts Society International Conference 2011 and 2013, the Inaugural International Panorama Competition in Trinidad & Tobago in 2015, and served as the percussion adjudicator for the 69th annual Hong Kong Schools Music Festival in Hong Kong, China in 2017.
As an educator, I currently teach a number of beginning and intermediate students. I also provide college audition preparation lessons for high school students looking to attend college for music. My focus as a teacher is the development of technique, and the use of proper technique across a variety of percussion instruments.
Dr. Z. received his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance and Pedagogy with a secondary area in Ethnomusicology, as well as his Master of Arts from the University of Iowa, and his Bachelor of Music Performance from the University of Toledo. Dr. Z. is a proud endorsor of Innovative Percussion sticks and mallets.

Teaching drum line and pit at West Liberty High School in West Liberty Iowa. During this time the drum line won the Outstanding Drumline award at local competitions.
Teaching percussion and drum set lessons to Toledo School for the Arts students, and leading the 6th grade steel band.
The National Society of Steel Band Educators is dedicated to advancing steel band education in the United States.
We offer students and professionals opportunities to grow artistically and professionally. Students can learn have a music industry experience through the PAS Internship program or apply to receive a PAS scholarship or grant. Professionals can create new percussion programs or gain recognition through PAS grants and contests.
