About Taylor B.

I've been playing music for almost my entire life. I started receiving lessons in bass, guitar, piano, and drums when I was 6 years old, and I've been developing my musical craft ever since.

For the past few years, I've taken everything I've learned over the course of my life and have been imparting it onto a select group of students. After earning my bachelor's degree at UCLA, I currently play in a touring rock band based out of Los Angeles, and I've been teaching guitar and bass to others over the past few years.

I'm well versed in technique and theory, and I firmly believe that playing music is all about self expression, and most importantly, having fun. I believe that getting the student to enjoy playing music is all about mastering it - the better you are, the more fun it's going to be.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a laid back, friendly, and patient teacher. Everyone goes at their own speed, and I encourage students to persevere and repeat until playing becomes second nature.

And again, the student should be having fun playing music, because that's what playing music's all about. I like to start with the student picking out some of his or her favorite songs that he or she would like to learn, and springboarding from there.

From there, we can delve further into technique and theory: understanding what you're doing when you're playing and why you're playing it. Again, we can use some of these songs the student has picked out to go into further detail about the ins and outs in regards to technique and theory.

Largely, my teaching technique involves a lot of trial and error. Some things seem impossible to play at first, but with repetition comes muscle memory. And as things become second nature to your fingers and hands, we can take the lessons into much more expansive territory.

*** Studio Equipment ***
My studio holds a wide array of guitars, basses, amps, keyboards, drums, and a piano. It is designed to plug-in and GO for teaching, jamming, recording, and mixing purposes. The list of gear contains but is not limited to:

Fender Jazz Bass
Ampeg SVT-VR amplifier with 4x10 cabinet
Fender Telecaster
DW Drumkit
Yamaha Piano
Prophet 08 Synthesizer
MicroKorg Synthesizer
Much much more

*** Travel Equipment ***
I have my own bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and a small practice amp I can bring. If the student has his or her own instrument, it would be optimal, but I can also bring a second bass or guitar if necessary.

*** Specialties ***
I've played and taught for all sorts of styles, including rock, funk, hip hop, ska, jazz, punk, and more. I primarily teach rock bass, but I'm deft with all sorts of technique, including finger technique, picking, slap, harmonics, soloing, and experimental.

Taylor is awesome. I came in wanting to up my blues game. He gave game plans every day. He listened to every song I was interested in sounding like so as best to get me to where I want to be.

Highly recommend for the beginner, average and above players trying to get some great feedback and some help thinking outside the box.

Experience

Multi-Instrumentalist
Dec 2008 - Present

Vanaprasta

For the last 6 years, I've been a professional studio and touring musician for Vanaprasta. I've written and performed bass, guitar, keys, vocals, drums, and programming for the band. Being a multi-instrumentalist allows me to understand the context and multi-faceted purpose of every instrument in the band. My proficiency in music has translated very well into teaching others the skills they seek in learning how to play. I've also contributed to other projects both in the studio and live, and my personality and ability to wear many hats is beneficial to my role as a teacher.
