Born and raised in Dallas, TX, I am a third generation musician and was a child prodigy playing my first “professional” gig at age 12. With almost 40 years of experience I have played every setting and style of music imaginable. I have logged countless hours in the studio and I have been teaching for over 25 years. I currently have an in home recording studio and focus on writing and recording as well as teaching. I play several other instruments besides Bass but Bass guitar is my first love in music and I feel the instruments role (as well as the new players) has grown leaps and bounds.
*** Lesson Details ***
I keep a very relaxed and laid back atmosphere. I believe first and foremost music must be fun and enjoyable. While knowing the technical and theoretical side of music and your instrument is important and does make you a better musician, learning an instrument should always be artful and fun. I get to know my students as individuals which will help me get to know your “natural” talents and abilities. After finding out what your goal as a musician is (whether play for fun, professional-live and/or studio, at your church…) I will design a personalized program for you. You will learn the fundamentals of your instrument, how to interact with other instruments to create music and move on to more exciting and challenging lessons as you grow musically.
*** Studio Equipment ***
Dedicated Home Studio, multiple amplifiers & bass guitars, keyboard, guitars, music stands, digital recording equipment utilizing Cubase and plenty of room should a parent feel more comfortable setting in with their child.
*** Specialties ***
I am a strong advocate of ear training as well as reading. I teach all my students both techniques. I have a strong influence in funk/slap bass as well as blues and surprisingly a country background.
Mr. Oliver is a wonderful teacher. He has an awesome knowledge of bass guitar and knows how to help beginners understand it. He is always very patient and helpful when I don't get something right away. I've been playing about a year now and know I wouldn't have lasted this long had it not been for his encouragement and making bass fun.
Had me playing fast!
Olin is an awesome bass player and teacher. I had never even picked up a bass before and he had me playing at my church a month later and I was only 13 at the time. I would recommend him to anyone. Very friendly and easy to understand!
