Born and raised in northern New Jersey, I have played the piano since age 8 and performed since age 12. Throughout high school, I began developing my voice as a pianist and composer. I participated in the Terra Magica music festival in Croatia and worked with several internationally renowned teachers who influenced me to pursue a career in music.

At William Paterson University, I studied piano with Aaron Wunsch (a graduate and current teacher at the Juilliard School), composition with John Link (a graduate of the City University of New York), and music analysis and ear training with Jeffrey Kresky (graduate of Colombia and Princeton music schools). During my undergrad, I participated in the Juilliard music program in Gijon, Spain where I performed and worked with some of the most renowned piano teachers in the world. I also began teaching private lessons with students who aspire to pursue music in higher education.

After receiving my degree, I formed an ensemble, continued performing in the greater New York area, and developed a large student base as a teacher. Aside from being a private instructor, I currently teach at Art In Motion Inc., an organization for students who have limited access to music and the arts, and at the School of Rock in Tenafly, NJ.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a relaxed and experienced teacher who loves to get to know students and parents. I believe music has the ability to enrich all areas of our lives, especially for those just beginning to explore different avenues of learning. Though I am classically trained, I also teach popular music styles.

For beginners, I develop a strong foundational knowledge of music and the piano. I incorporate fundamental aspects of music theory, piano technique, and performance into every lesson. I especially focus on fostering a genuine love of music within the student so that they stick with it and enjoy themselves. For intermediate - advanced students, I delve into deeper aspects of music theory, piano technique, performance, and piano literature. I particularly focus on the student's musicality and address music history as it applies to the literature. I advocate performance opportunities as much as possible, and work with the student and parents to find appropriate venues for performance in the area.

I look forward to hearing from you and starting our lessons together!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide an electronic weighted keyboard if the student does not have a piano/keyboard available. Students should purchase music themselves as we progress.

*** Specialties ***
Wide ranging knowledge of classical music, piano literature, piano pedagogy, and all styles of popular music. Well versed in electronic music, D.A.Ws, and beginner recording techniques. Experienced songwriter/composer of modern classical music, popular music, and electronic music.

Joey, has been a pleasure to work with as my eleven year old's previous piano teacher just recently retired to Florida. Joey has a calm, genuine style! He assessed my son within the first hour lesson, and asked my son to select a song that he wants to learn to play that is "Happy" by F. Williams. The transition went exceptionally well and my son enjoys his lessons. We are all pleasantly happy!

Joey Latka is a great piano teacher!!!

Joey is a very kind and patient teacher. My daughter is quite shy, and i was worried that she may not relate to what i perceived as a typical piano teacher. I was attracted to his profile, because I wanted someone that was not a "typical" piano teacher. Someone young, fun, kind, easy going, but able to bring out the best in my 9 year old daughter. He has managed to do that in a short time. He is very encouraging and generous with the time that he spends with her and she enjoys her lessons with him immensely because she's having fun whilst learning. She practices, because he makes the lessons fun for her and she wants to make him proud with what she has learnt. We're very pleased with Joey so far and would highly recommend him to anyone.
