I am a multi-disciplinary artist who grew up in a musical family and played all his life. I started guitar at age 13, and since then have also learned bass guitar, flute, hand percussion, and kora. I have learned from private lessons, playing with those who know more than me, and from teaching myself. I've performed in various ensembles and in several states and countries, playing covers as well as original music. In college, I took courses in music theory and reading. I am versed in classical, jazz, rock, blues, Latin, flamenco, North Indian, and West African guitar styles. In my own playing, I am deeply interested in the connection between music and dance, in improvisation, and in traditional world music.
*** Lesson Details ***
I have eight years of experience teaching children and adults, and I welcome all interests and abilities. I am interested in helping you to learn the kind of music that you love, or want to play, so we will use that to help us develop technique, musicality, and rhythm, rather than a "one size fits all" sort of method. We will practice learning from ear and learning to read music and chord sheets. You will know how to follow a structured song to the letter, but also how to improvise. I will help to challenge you when you need it, but I will never be strict or ridged with our lessons. The most important thing for me is that learning be a joy. I believe we learn more, faster, and longer when what we are studying is something we are passionate about.
