I hold a degree from Hamline University in St. Paul, MN, but that doesn't make me a good teacher. I've played professionally for over 25 years, have taught English as a Second Language, Hockey and Audio Engineering, taught people age 5 to 75, and have taught private music lessons full time in Minneapolis for the past 9 years, but this doesn't make me a good teacher. What makes me a good teacher is that I have an infectious love of music and a passionate commitment to helping people. I do have specialties, like helping singer/songwriters develop their lyrics, arrangements, voice, and performance as well as helping artists get through creativity blocks, stage fright and preparing for studio recording. My experience as a producer, studio musician and audio engineer has allowed me to understand what an artist needs from writing a song to releasing a CD that represents who you are at your best. I love what I do whether you have aspirations to be a professional musician or simply want you or your child to enjoy playing an instrument for yourself or friends and family.
*** Lesson Details ***
From the first lesson, my students learn, they grow, they feel good about themselves - and they get results. Whether adult, teenager or child, I find out what music inspires and I use this music to give access to learning regardless of level. Whether a Disney song, the Doors, or Debussy, I fuel your lesson with what lights you up. I am positive, attentive and also discerning. Quickly, I find out what learning style works best for my student; by ear, visually, or intellectually, and I spend the time to customize their materials and lesson plans to an extraordinary degree. If a student thrives with me being highly energized, or with me being more mellow, or if they have special needs, I'm able to adapt to what works best for my student. It is a joy and privilege to be a teacher, but especially a music teacher!
*** Studio Equipment ***
I have instruments, amps, laptop, mics...anything we need.
*** Travel Equipment ***
I often allow new students to use a loaner guitar of mine until they feel comfortable committing to purchasing their own. I help them find the right guitar for themselves by searching for used gear and accompanying them to the store. I provide all audio files and written materials.
*** Specialties ***
I teach ALL styles. I most often teach students wanting to play and sing songs from pop, show tunes, alternative, country, rock, singer/songwriter and jazz standards. I specialize in songwriting and often my students create their own compositions regardless of level. Improvisation (just playing!) is also a key part of my teaching.
Teaching creativity and self-expression to disadvantage high school students.
Dietrich did a great job and helped me achieve my goals with harmonica and guitar
I had an amazing experience with Diedrich!! He was very astute to my needs and my goals. He was very patient but at the same time was able to motivate me to work harder. I came for vocal lessons but at the same time he instructed me on guitar basics, it was the first time taking a guitar lesson. I always left feeling upbeat and a tad more accomplished!! Thanks Diedrich!!+ Read More
Does a great job of tailoring lessons to match your musical goals. Very patient
Diedrich makes you feel comfortable starting lessons at any age or skill level! He made learning guitar very enjoyable, and encouraged me to use my "inner ear" when playing. Diedrich also encouraged me to practice singing along with playing guitar, something that I had not felt comfortable doing previous to taking lessons. He takes the time to tailor the lessons to your personal style and needs. Diedrich is a great teacher!+ Read More
I'm a middle aged guy with no musical experience. My wife got me lessons for Christmas. Dietrich got me playing the harmonica and I liked it so much I started on guitar. He is very patient and gives bite sized stuff to work on. He's the best!
Diedrich is an amazing vocal coach. I really enjoyed my time taking singing lessons with him. He made it fun to learn and he found ways to relate the teaching material to real life situations to make learning easier. He was able to help me become a better singer where I feel more confident in my sound and tone. I'll continue to use him in future lessons.+ Read More
Diedrich was very patient and helpful. He tailored the lesson to my experience and what I was looking for. He had exercises and recordings to help me practice at home. I am looking forward to my next lesson.
Diedrich is a terrific teacher able to convey concepts in terms all levels of students can understand and benefit from musically. A true musical soul who really loves to share his talents in a genuine way!
You really couldn't ask for a better teacher than Diedrich. I've been working with him for about a year on songwriting, singing, and guitar, and have improved so much more than I ever expected. I had no songwriting experience when I started, and with his help, I've gained the skills and confidence to write songs I feel good about. He’s patient, supportive, and genuinely cares about helping you be the best you can be. I always walk away from lessons feeling like I understand something I didn't before. He’s inspiring to learn from. You’d be lucky to have him as a teacher.+ Read More
I’m a lifetime student and decided to take voice lessons this year. Diedrich has been an amazing teacher. He spends time getting to know the student and learning her goals to create the best plan for her. He’s a great listener and observer which allows him to quickly adapt to the students needs.
No need to look for another teacher in the Twin Cities. If you’re reading this, you've found the best and should book your first lesson now.
The BEST Guitar Teacher I've EVER had!
Is a very nice, genuine person, who is honest, straightforward, and knows EXACTLY what he is doing. He is smart, wise, funny, and very charismatic. He makes taking guitar lessons a joy, rather than a chore.
I would recommend Diedrich to anyone pursuing guitar or bass lessons, whether it is for one or two lessons, or for the long term mentoring and instruction, of which he is extremely capable of providing.
Great teacher, very adaptive and receptive to individual interests
Diedrich is a great teacher and makes learning feel fun as opposed to a chore. Granted there is practice and work involved with any lessons you take, he does a great job at relating this to your specific interests which helps you stay interested in what you are learning. He provides a good mix of fun with progressing your musical knowledge and is a great communicator outside of lesson times if you have any questions. I feel you get more from him than just the lesson time, which shows great dedication to his students.
Patient, funny, excellent teacher
I've been studying with Diedrich for about 3 months. I picked him because of the numerous high rankings he'd received from students, and he's lived up to what people said about him. He's been curious about what I want to learn, validated the strengths I bring to learning as an adult, has found ways to make me feel like I'm making music even though I'm a beginner, has been helpful with recommendations about guitar accessories, and has loaned me a guitar at lessons that's a better fit that the one I'm practicing on at home. He's funny, too, which is a great asset to any teacher.
An outstanding teacher
Diedrich really is a terrific teacher. He has a great style that puts you at ease instantly. I really love the way he ensures you learn the right technical skills but at the same time makes sure you're having fun and learning the type of music that you most enjoy.
This product has great features.
I didn't know exactly what to expect but I've been very pleasantly surprised. We emailed a bunch before the first lesson and were able to jump right in with what I was working on. I've worked with a couple people on songwriting before but nothing has ever been so helpful. I definitely recommend him.
I started learning guitar in my mid sixties, after decades of wanting to play but, resigned to the fact that I didn't have what it takes. Diedrich was giving lessons in the building where I was employed and I could observe the stream of guitar students coming and going to their lessons. I was inspired by their enthusiasm and took the risk to enroll in lessons myself.
At first I was afraid to pluck a string and make a sound. I found Diedrich nonjudgmental and I was able to progress. In addition I have found him flexible to my schedule, and location. I recommend him and his skills highly.
A fun and unique way to learn music
Diedrich is an awesome guy and an awesome teacher. I started taking weekly lessons from him when i was 13 and continued taking lessons for 5 years. Over those 5 years Diedrich opened my mind to the world of music and guided me through the process of becoming a musically talented individual. His teaching method is unique, fun, and very effective. He absorbs your interests and goals and creates a program that is interactive, flexible and fun. He helps you learn what music is; why some things sound good and others sound off. He trains your ear to hear things in music that you never could have imagined before. Overall, Diedrich is just a great guy who cares about his students and wants them to have fun learning about the joys of music.
Diedrich keeps me learning and loving music. He is a reason I still play after 11 years.
Diedrich is great -- teaches skills and instills confidence
I came to my lessons with Diedrich already knowing some guitar and having taken classical guitar lessons for several years, reading music and getting technique. Diedrich has been teaching me to improvise on acoustic guitar, including not just how to improvise in different keys but also all those intangibles like confidence, musicality, creativity, expression...the things that don't come easily to some of us but are so important.
He's a great teacher for this because he's so intuitive, respectful and patient -- and fun.
My Highest Recommendation
Diedrich is a one of a kind guy. I had taken lessons with him for over 6 years, starting off at my local community music lessons venue in the neighborhood of Linden Hills. There he gave me the chance to learn bass guitar, where I had no background knowledge. Shortly after I was able to play songs by heart. He is patient and kind, and goes out of his way to help you learn the songs you want to learn. After about 3 years of bass, I made a transition into vocals, where the next 3 years, he helped me work the best abilities of my voice. I used to sing as a soprano one, (the highest female voice in a choral setting), and with his help, I was able to reach a more comfortable setting as an alto. He was always supportive of the song choices that I wanted to sing, and would take time out of his week before our next lesson to learn the song for our next session. He made lessons very enjoyable and fun, where I felt free to be myself, and I always felt comfortable to sing in front of him even if I knew it didn't sound that great. I was in choir for my first two years of high school, and I had the worst stage fright when it came to singing a solo in front of a crowd. Diedrich helped me conquer my fear, he gave me the push I needed. Looking back I will forever be grateful for what he has done for me. Without him, I would have missed out on a beautiful opportunity to sing at my mom's wedding. He has been not only a wonderful teacher, but the most amazing friend to not just me but my family as well. I highly recommend him as a teacher! I had taken many music lessons with different people before meeting Diedrich, and it stopped with him. I wouldn't have found a better teacher.
Diedrich is a great teacher. When I started taking lessons, I had never played an instrument in my life. In few lessons, I was able to follow my favorite music playing my guitar. He is also a sensitive soul and I often listen to his CD in my car while driving. Great person and a good friend.
Versatile, talented and great attitude!
Diedrich really takes the time to figure what your goals are, and he works hard to get you to where you want to be. He is a performer himself, so he's got a ton of helpful advice and methods to improve your guitar playing and overall performance. I'd highly recommend him as a teacher.
Highly recommended for songwriting!
I had the privilege of learning songwriting techniques from Diedrich over the course of a few months, and in the process we also did some work with singing, guitar, and musical theory. Diedrich brings both skill and passion to the table, clearly evidenced by both his own music and his teaching technique. His calm nature and appreciation for the musical process make it extremely easy to improve while learning from him. I quickly felt comfortable enough to share my lyrics and the thoughts behind them, which enabled Diedrich to help me get at some very important new angles. I'd highly recommend him for anyone looking to improve their songwriting.
Diedrich is extremely passionate and dedicated to his work as a musician and teacher.
We look forward to our lessen every week. Diedrich keeps my daughter engaged and challenged in a beautiful way. He is an expert in his field.
Fantastic guitar teacher!
Diedrich instructed me from 7th grade until I left for college, and taught me a great depth and breadth of musical skill and knowledge. He is incredible flexible and has a deep understanding of music and the ability to share that knowledge with his students.
Very inspiring and patient teacher!
I am a 52 year old mother and grandmother. Right from the first lesson Diedrich shared that he was confident that I could learn how to play the guitar. He taught me about the strings, frets, chords, how to play riffs, and encouraged different styles of music and music theory.
Diedrich was patient and encouraging when I wanted to give up. He explained with a lot of commitment and practice on my part, it will not only pay off but also I will have fun!
With Diedrich's knowledge of music he not only taught me how to play the guitar; he taught me how to hear, feel and understand Music.
Diedrich is an excellent teacher and has an easy way about him that puts people at ease. His approach is different than other instructors my kids have had â its personal and directed toward what my son is looking for. He is in tune with my sonâs interests and is patient and encouraging every step of the way. And, although my son can be easily distracted and frustrated when faced with a new challenge, Diedrich is able to keep things positive and interesting for him.
Among the other qualities that set him apart are his phenomenal knowledge and his ability to make every lesson challenging, yet fun. He also provides thoughtful feedback on what is working well and where improvement is needed. It has been a joy to watch my son develop his musical knowledge and skills and practice without being asked.
Thanks to Diedrichâs style, flexibility, and willingness to go âoutside the boxâ in his teaching, my sonâs progress is well beyond what we were expecting.
A Perfect Fit
My 13 year old son has been taking lessons from Diedrich for 3+ years and his musical ability has grown exponentially during that time. Diedrich is a talented musician and teacher. He has shown an innate sensitivity to my son's needs and learning style, great communication skills, a generous and kind nature, the ability to motivate, wonderful taste in music, and an abundance of patience. He has a great deal of integrity and has been a very positive influence on my son. He also makes learning fun, which is so important in motivating kids to keep up with practice. I feel fortunate to have found Diedrich and would highly recommend him as a teacher.
