My approach to teaching is simple. The primary goal is to have fun and enjoy the experience of making and creating music. Whether you are interested in pursuing a career in music or just wanting to add a bit of a creative outlet to your life, I can help.

My specialties include jazz, r&b, and pop piano styles. I do teach a little classical but primarily to beginners only. My curriculum is simple. I try to teach you what it is YOU want to know and that which fit your needs. There are some fundamentals that we all must learn, but typically I can have you playing a song your first lesson. After playing piano professionally while in high school, David attended the University of Montevallo- Alabama's oldest and most respected music school and earned a Bachelor of Music Education in Piano and Voice. In fact, David studied classical piano with Dr. Robert Cowan of the i
nternationally acclaimed duo piano team- Yarbrough and Cowan and studied voice with Bruce Tolbert and Madame Baruvka- a world renowned European opera singer. Additionally, David was also a fellow classmate of the current Broadway diva, Rebecca Luker.

After graduating from Montevallo, David moved to Atlanta and starred in professional musical theatre while working as a public school choral music director and attending Georgia State University for Post Baccalaureate studies in Theatre. In fact, David completed some of his actor training at the HB Acting Studio in NYC.

Some of David's favorite roles include the Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors, Rudolfo in A View from the Bridge, Serge in The Food Chain, the teacher in School House Rock, Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls, multiple characters in The Harvey Milk Show and Raywanda in Saga: The Story of Whitney Bonneville. After working in the public and private schools for a number of years, David combined his music, theatre and counseling experience into creating David M Artist Development in 2005. In fact, David is one of the only piano and voice teachers in the country who's been cross trained in the areas of music, theatre, education and psychology.

David particularly enjoys working with semiprofessional and professional musicians and actors in the Atlanta area looking to expand their knowledge, skills and experience and adults who've ignored their creative sides for most of their life while attending to family and career matters instead.

Author and Motivator, Joyce Rennolds says...Phenomenal Results!

David, I am grateful to you for encouraging me to give up old beliefs about 'not being able to sing'. Since I am a Motivational Speaker and a New Thought Minister and teach an 'I can' attitude it never occurred to me to apply that idea to my singing voice. The results have been phenomenal. Thanks to your wonderful style of teaching I am now singing with confidence and poise in my church services. For my own pleasure I am becoming better and better at singing those wonderful Broadway tunes. Thank you for your encouragement, your professionalism, your unique style and your loving patience to work so diligently with me. You are the BEST!

Amazing Teacher and Gifted Musician

"I write this testimonial as a supporter of Mr. David Mashburn and his everlasting passion for implementing the love of music into young musicians like myself. I had the pleasure of being a student of Mr. Mashburn when I was in high school, and I can honestly say that experience helped enhance my skills as a pianist, singer and songwriter. His enthusiasm for the many faces of music, and his knowledge on how to properly develop one’s talent allowed me to grow as an artist. Through my academic matriculation through Morehouse College, Mr. Mashburn inspired a passion for writing and composing that led me to form a songwriting team named, Nemesis, under the direction of Russell Carter’s Artist Management company. I would not have found this passion and skill without the help of Mr. Mashburn, as he was the first one to encourage songwriting by helping me combine my skills as a pianist, singer and lyricist. He has been a teacher, counselor, and a friend to me. I credit my future successes to the humble beginnings as a student of Mr. Mashburn, and I am forever grateful to him. I hope he continues to spread the love of music to musicians everywhere."

Lessons with Sasha are great. Ive only ever sung to myself and rarely in a band setting, so nerves are pretty high. Sasha is non-judgemental and seeks to find areas of weakness and assigns lessons that serve to correct them. I look forward to lessons and sense improvement with eack week.

*** Lesson Details ***
The goal of music lessons is not to just learn the notes and mechanics of an instrument, but to become a well-rounded MUSICIAN. With my lessons, we don't just go through a book page-by-page, rather, lessons are shaped around the musical tastes and interests of the student. Musical theory concepts are applied in actual songwriting and current popular songs. I accompany the students on various instruments, imitating a real performance situation. I teach all ages; beginners to advanced musicians.

Unlike a crowded music store with a cramped little room for lessons, my lessons are taught in a large, open, and well-lit home studio. There is an open waiting area where parents can listen as well. Parking is convenient on a cul-de-sac with a clear view into the teaching studio.

James L.

Douglasville, GA

I have been teaching for over 8 years, with 18 years experience as a musician. My students are welcome and encouraged to pick out songs they would like to learn. I have found that students who are excited and happy with learning songs they pick out tend to practice more and achieve their goals.

About James

James, a 3rd generation musician and teacher, graduated from Atlanta Institute of Music in 2008 with a focus on musical performance, theory and composition. He has experience teaching a variety of ages from 5 to 80 as well as students with special needs.

Local lessons are offered in Douglasville, GA - (Westmoreland Plaza); and at my home studio in Decatur, GA - (Bridlewood Cir)

"Hey everyone, I am always willing to take on new students no matter what age and or experience. I usually average around 40+ students a week so go and find a time that works for you!"

Students who take lesso
ns in person will be able to take advantage of programs such as Riffstation (a slow-down audio file program to make learning easier, faster, and not to mention more fun.)

Students who enroll in online Skype classes can look forward to personal music material handed out through email. Students are also offered play-along pieces at the end of every lesson!

James is a lovely, very knowledgeable person, also very warm and he made me feel at home right away. I feel comfortable letting him know how stupid I feel about having a hard time applying music theory to my playing. I am looking forward to working with him and learning this new language and applying it. I am very excited to have this opportunity!
