About Diego

Diego is one of Chicago's most sought-after Spanish and Flamenco guitar coaches and instructors. He has taught over 4000 private lessons and has given lectures and workshops in over 300 universities, elementary schools, and music schools, both nationally and internationally.

He graduated with highest honors in flamenco guitar performance from the Fundacion Cristina Heeren de Arte Flamenco (Seville, Spain). He also holds a Bachelor of Science in Research Psychology and focuses on applying the psychology of learning, skill acquisition, and expertise to learning guitar. With this knowledge,
Diego is able to help students achieve their goals quickly with utmost precision and effectiveness.

WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT FROM PRIVATE LESSONS?

The very first things we'll learn to do in our private lesson will be to RELAX, BE PATIENT, and HAVE FUN. Yes, mastering (or even just getting decent at) the guitar takes time and dedicated work, but it should NEVER...BE...RUSHED. Ironically, by relaxing and taking it slow, you'll excel rather quickly and, more importantly, CORRECTLY.

Lessons are based on time-tested methods in guitar pedagogy as well as on up-to-date scientific research in the neurological and psychological processes of skill acquisition and expertise. Key concepts you will learn to incorporate into your practice are "deliberate practice," "spaced practice," "interleaved practice," "performance practice," "mental practice," "conceptual practice," and more. My goal, as a teacher, is to help students learn to practice effectively and efficiently in order to develop the neurological pathways necessary to form, improve, and maintain high-level, musical skills.

CAN ANYONE LEARN GUITAR?

Absolutely! I accept students over 6 years old and at any experience level. Whether you've never touched a guitar before our first lesson, have been playing for a few years, or have your Master's degree in guitar performance, I can and will help you achieve your goals (so long as you do your homework).

WHAT KIND OF GUITAR DO YOU NEED?

For flamenco or classical lessons, you will need a nylon-string guitar (e.g., classical or flamenco), NOT a steel string guitar. If you don't own a nylon-string guitar, you can certainly rent one, but it must be available to you for home practice AT LEAST 6 days/week. For general guitar (with a pick), either a nylon-string or steel-string guitar is fine; however, beginners should use nylon-string guitars.

CAN YOU GUARANTEE RESULTS?

YES! If you follow my instruction and practice plan, I can certainly guarantee results!

Consistent and correct practice are the keys to success. The more consistent you are and the more correctly you practice, the sooner you'll reach your goals. This requires you to commit to practicing 6 days/week for an absolute minimum of 20 minutes/day up to a maximum of 3.5 hours/day; NO EXCEPTIONS! Again, you also MUST be practicing CORRECTLY. I'll show you how, but if you aren't practicing this way and are not consistent with your practice plan, I cannot guarantee results.

I appreciate Diego's teaching and how he is able to catch the subtle things I am doing wrong over a web cam no less. His pedagogy sets a high standard for playing, but the lessons progress naturally and logically.

As a teacher, Diego is very patient while encouraging me and knowing when the teaching pace should pick up or slow down. This makes his teaching very efficient while ensuring strong fundamentals.

I look forward to many more years of instruction by Diego and am happy to have found such a knowledgeable and skillful maestro.

My son Robert has been taking guitar lessons with Diego for over a year now. Lessons were taking place at Diego's premises until we moved back to our country. Robert totally refused to work, or even consider the possibility to work with any other teacher besides Diego. Ever since our return, Robert has been taking his weekly lessons over Skype.

Diego is professional, talented, deligent, patient, caring, well prepared, well knowledged, knows how to prepare and challenge his students and most importantly, puts his students interests first.

There are no words I can use to explain the joy my son has when he takes his lessons and when he finishes and performs one of Diego's flamenco pieces, nor can I explain his anxiety when waiting for his lesson to begin. Diego is truly a great teacher and mentor to his students and I strongly recommend him to be the guitar teacher of choice.

Paul W.

Chicago, IL

I tailor all my lessons to the individual students interests and wants.
Whatever your goals are, I'll help you get there.

About Paul

I have played the guitar for twenty years and have studied a wide variety of music including jazz, classical, folk, blues and rock. I’m skilled in acoustic, electric and classical styles of the guitar. I have an open mind about music and can appreciate any style or type. I have a firm background on music theory, so I am able to explain what I am teaching. I excelled in all my classes in college, music and Gen Eds, with a GPA over 3.75. I also have experience in teaching guitar or bass to students ranging from the ages of six to sixty six. I enjoy taking what I have learned and passing it
on to someone else to experience. I believe this is one way you can leave your mark in music. I believe the experience I have playing in bands, and learning songs with my ability of having relative pitch will make my students improve quicker. I am also a very skilled sight reader and can recognize key signatures and musical notation. I’ve also been playing electric bass guitar for 13 years now and have the same skill set as my guitar playing. In fact I am hired to perform more often as a bassist than a guitarist.
I went to Columbia College between 2000-2003 and I completed a Bachelor Arts in Music, Concentration: Instrument Performance.
I also went to Harper College between 1997-2000 and I completed an Associates in Fine Arts of Music.

*** Lesson Details ***
I tailor all my lessons to the individual students interests and wants.

Learning the guitar or bass is fun! And as your teacher I will make you want to practice.

I had my first class with Paul. The session was amazing, Paul is really good at explaining the details of progressions. He's friendly and gets the class moving in the right direction at the same time so you don't end up getting too bored with instructions or while away the time chatting away(which isn't so bad for a first class). I will be sure to update the rating and provide more feedback as I go through more lessons. I really like how Paul doesn't force you to take a package of classes as with some of the other instructors I've heard about.

Paul has been the most amazing instructor. I have never played the electric guitar before and his level of patience has made it extremely easy for me to learn. He writes lesson plans and assigns "homework" appropriate for your level of experience which helps in learning or further developing your skill. I plan on continuing to take lessons with Paul for quite some time.

Kelvin L.

Bolingbrook, IL

I have been teaching guitar for more than 15 years.
Every student is unique. We all have different ways of learning and retaining information: by rote, from a printed score, by ear, etc... Each student is interviewed and consulted to gain an understanding of how they learn most effectively and to create customized private lessons on the guitar.
For classical guitar, there again are strict technical guidelines to achieve a beautiful tone and effective movement. To supplement my private instruction, I use different method of books and others for technical training and basic music theory as they relate to the guitar.

About Kelvin

I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University
of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I strongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

*** Lesson Details ***
I use Suzuki and traditional method for my students... for Suzuki beginner they will play a song in four days....

Kelvin was a nice guy but not very good at listening. You can tell he is probably good at SEO, but is more geared towards giving multiple lessons, because he will not answer any questions if its not in the order he is teaching. Being a teacher myself, you have to LISTEN to the person paying for the lesson. You should not tell a paying customer that you wont answer a question because you will get to that at a later time in a different lesson. Some people, like myself understand many aspects of SEO already, and just need to ask some questions to learn new things to try.

Kelvin did give me a couple very good tips I will implement.

You could be a very good teacher my friend, just listen more

Dave K.

I have been teaching guitar for 18 years and have taught hundreds of satisfied students. When you sign up for classical guitar lessons with me, you will begin by learning the basics of the instrument including proper holding and playing position, tone production, rhythm, first position notes, basic chords and notation. Once you get the basics down, you will learn how to play a variety of classical guitar pieces appropriate for your level and interests. All of this can happen within the first 4-6 months of playing.

About Dave

Dave K. began playing guitar at the age of 10. His influences include Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Guthrie Govan, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Pat Martino, Pat Metheny and Scott Henderson. At the age of 17 he began teaching private guitar and bass lessons to classmates from his neighborhood high school. It was through this initial experience with teaching that he realized he wanted to make music education his career. Since then he has taught private guitar and bass lessons at Naperville Music, Rossi Music, Horizon Music, and the Plainfield School of Music. In addit
ion, he has taught orchestra, guitar, and jazz band at Rolling Meadows High School.
In 2000 Dave graduated from the University of Northern Illinois with a degree in jazz and classical guitar where he studied with world-renowned fusion guitarist Fareed Haque. In addition, Dave has studied guitar with some of the best guitar players in the world including Dave Uhrich and Andy Timmons.

In 2003-2009, he produced and played guitar in the Chicago based hard rock group Disonic. In 2007, Disonic singed to Darkstar Records and released the E.P. The Value of Truth. The Value of Truth was distributed in the USA and Japan. In addition, it was distributed digitally world wide on iTunes, Amazon, and CD Baby.

In 2009 he attended VanderCook College of Music and earned a Master’s Degree in Music Education. Currently, Dave is playing bass in the Chicago rock group I Decline and guitar in the Dave K. Group. *** Lesson Details ***
As a private music instructor for the past 15 years, I personally have been granted the opportunity to teach a wide variety of music students. I have taught students ranging in age from 6 to 65. I have taught students from various ethnic and economic backgrounds. I have taught students with various physical, emotional, and learning disabilities. Regardless of the situation, I have always approached each lesson with the idea that every student deserves my best efforts as a teacher. This is because I believe that everyone, regardless of age, cultural heritage, ability, or financial circumstance deserve the opportunity to participate in the best music experiences possible.

I believe that everyone has the ability to learn to play a musical instrument and achieve success on it if they possess the desire to do so. This is because music is a vital part of the human experience. Music has the ability to turn ordinary life experiences into extraordinary ones. Think of everyday events such as: waking up in the morning, commuting to and from work or school, going through the work or school day, going to dinner with a friend or loved one, going to a sporting event, watching a movie or television show, or working out at the gym. Now, picture what these everyday events would be like without the presence of music. Without music, these experiences would be extremely dull and we as human beings would not be able to full appreciate the wonderful moments in our lives.

As a music educator, my promise is to guide my students through the journey of learning to play music so they can experience the joy that it brings into their lives and the lives of others. I promise to help my students realize their full musical potential. I will always treat each student equally with fairness and respect, provide the best possible atmosphere for their growth, and recognize that each student is unique in how they learn and grow.

I have had 6 lessons so far, and I highly recommend Matt as a teacher. He is very knowledgeable and he has challenged me to go beyond chord playing and learn to face new challenges and techniques. I have started learning to read music for the guitar (although I had the option of tab) which will greatly expand my ability to play. He was also flexible with me when I ran into scheduling difficulty early on when my small biz got crazy. If you are interested in taking your playing to the next level and learning a lot about music along the way, Matt is a great choice. I am purchasing another set of lessons and am very happy with the ease of Skype lessons.

I have seen Matt develop as a guitar player for many years. I have seen him play in a variety of settings: classical and rock. We grew up playing together. I played bass.

But, when I decided to pick up the guitar over the last couple of years, I turned to Matt. He always gives me sound advice, techniques, and insight on how to be a better musician. He has provided tabs when I could not figure out a certain part of a song on my own. Moreover, I have watched his videos to learn songs.

He is a great teacher with sound theory! He loves music, and it shows...
