I tailor all my lessons to the individual students interests and wants. Whatever your goals are, I'll help you get there.
I have played the guitar for twenty years and have studied a wide variety of music including jazz, classical, folk, blues and rock. I’m skilled in acoustic, electric and classical styles of the guitar. I have an open mind about music and can appreciate any style or type. I have a firm background on music theory, so I am able to explain what I am teaching. I excelled in all my classes in college, music and Gen Eds, with a GPA over 3.75. I also have experience in teaching guitar or bass to students ranging from the ages of six to sixty six. I enjoy taking what I have learned and passing it
on to someone else to experience. I believe this is one way you can leave your mark in music. I believe the experience I have playing in bands, and learning songs with my ability of having relative pitch will make my students improve quicker. I am also a very skilled sight reader and can recognize key signatures and musical notation. I’ve also been playing electric bass guitar for 13 years now and have the same skill set as my guitar playing. In fact I am hired to perform more often as a bassist than a guitarist. I went to Columbia College between 2000-2003 and I completed a Bachelor Arts in Music, Concentration: Instrument Performance. I also went to Harper College between 1997-2000 and I completed an Associates in Fine Arts of Music.
*** Lesson Details *** I tailor all my lessons to the individual students interests and wants. Whatever your goals are, I'll help you get there. If you just want to learn music theory or how to write a song, I can teach you all that and more. I will teach you how to read music but if you don't wan't to do that, I will teach you how to read tablature. I'll push you to learn your instrument and to practice but I won't force to practice anything that you are not interested in. After about 3-6 months of lessons with me you will be able to play songs that you wanted to learn and you will also know all the essential fun basics of your instrument. Learning the guitar or bass is fun! And as your teacher I will make you want to practice.

I started with Paul about 6-8 weeks back and i am already starting to play some famous songs. which is great for motivation. He can mold the class as you desire based on your choice of music and style of learning. He is a wonderful teacher for all age groups. I would recommend taking lessons with him.
Alex September 18, 2016
I'm writing this because honestly, I would not be where i am today without the guidance and teachings of Paul. His ability to bridge the gap between technique and style is truly priceless & continues to reward me a decade after taking lessons with him. As a touring musician, I owe a lot of my understanding of music to him. Thank you Paul!
I have been teaching guitar for more than 15 years. Every student is unique. We all have different ways of learning and retaining information: by rote, from a printed score, by ear, etc... Each student is interviewed and consulted to gain an understanding of how they learn most effectively and to create customized private lessons on the guitar. For classical guitar, there again are strict technical guidelines to achieve a beautiful tone and effective movement. To supplement my private instruction, I use different method of books and others for technical training and basic music theory as they relate to the guitar.
I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis. I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University
of Nottingham. I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system. Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I strongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc.... The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

Our first lesson was amazing. He is very kind and patient and has a great personality. We are excited to have found him and can't wait for next weeks lesson
I like to keep lessons fun but focused. Utilizing the Carlevaro method as developed by South American Virtuoso Abel Carlevaro, the student learns to develop great technique by working on exercises and actual guitar pieces.
The student develops self confidence by accomplishing small goals over a period of time.
"No matter what style of music you want to play, the language of music is the same. Learn the 7 aspects of guitar and you will be able to play the music you love."
Some people find their passion early in life, and for Bob M., that's absolutely true. At age 13, he played the guitar at his first musical gig, and many years later, he continues to play guitar professionally and teach others through his highly popular music lessons.
Well educated at the American Conservatory of Music, Bob spent years studying harmony and theory. And through 8 years of rigorous lessons and education under fame
d classical guitar teacher Jack Cecchini, Bob learned the true dedication and passion required for becoming a professional musician. In addition to his work with Jack, Bob played in the Masterclasses of Oscar Ghiglia (Segovia's podigy) and Manuel Lince (disciple of Abel Carlevaro) and did advanced guitar study with Jack Grassel, a well known master guitarist. Bobalso diversified his education by studying at the Bloom School of Jazz and spending three years learning improvisation techniques from famed jazz guru Charlie Banacos.
Because of his education, Bob is perhaps best known for his incredible improvisation abilities and his unique arrangements of pop tunes. Inspired by Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Barney Kessel, Andres Segovia, and other iconic guitarists, Bob has blended what he loves best about traditional Bebop and Blues with his creative, harmonic approaches. His jazz trio especially capitalizes on their unique ability to improvise, providing a steady stream of tunes, all while playing great jazz music and standards from the Great American Song Book. A passionate and energetic performer, Bob has been playing for crowds since his high school rock band days. Today, he enjoys playing solo and with his jazz trio at both private and corporate events.
Bob enjoys passing along his knowledge and experience to others as the founder of G4 Guitar Riverside where he teaches all styles, all ages, and all levels. Known by his students as an encouraging and supportive teacher, Bob believes that any student can become a good guitarist with enough dedication and passion. He teaches the G4 Guitar method, which is based on 29 years of research and development and is a structured, proven method for learning the guitar.
In addition to teaching guitar lessons, Bob has also written one book on soloing concepts for guitar, a theory course for beginners, and has developed special technical exercises to help guitarists with technical development.
Today, Bob continues to teach guitar lessons and is working on a CD of solo guitar music consisting of jazz and pop tunes.

I am beginner - medium level, trying to get my feet wet in the jazz realm. Bob is truly a master in the field, and every lesson I learn something new. I think even for a professional player, Bob would still be a master and have something to teach. He is the real deal; a true professional! At the same time, he is a skilled professor, knowing right away what your level, needs and expectations are and tailoring the class to your level. He is clearly passionate about what he does, and every class is a lot of fun and something I really look forward to. He also masters blues, classical, pop, rock and any other style I could think of. You cannot go wrong with Bob!

Robert Minchin was great!!!
I really learned a lot from Mr. Minchin! I was very nervous and he got me calmed down. He really knows his stuff. He identified several areas where I was playing incorrectly and got me straightened out. I truly appreciate what a privilege it was to have him. I hope to take lessons from him again. Thank you!

*** Lesson Details *** As a private music instructor for the past 15 years, I personally have been granted the opportunity to teach a wide variety of music students. I have taught students ranging in age from 6 to 65. I have taught students from various ethnic and economic backgrounds. I have taught students with various physical, emotional, and learning disabilities. Regardless of the situation, I have always approached each lesson with the idea that every student deserves my best efforts as a teacher. This is because I believe that everyone, regardless of age, cultural heritage, ability, or financial circumstance deserve the opportunity to participate in the best music experiences possible.
I believe that everyone has the ability to learn to play a musical instrument and achieve success on it if they possess the desire to do so. This is because music is a vital part of the human experience. Music has the ability to turn ordinary life experiences into extraordinary ones. Think of everyday events such as: waking up in the morning, commuting to and from work or school, going through the work or school day, going to dinner with a friend or loved one, going to a sporting event, watching a movie or television show, or working out at the gym. Now, picture what these everyday events would be like without the presence of music. Without music, these experiences would be extremely dull and we as human beings would not be able to full appreciate the wonderful moments in our lives.
As a music educator, my promise is to guide my students through the journey of learning to play music so they can experience the joy that it brings into their lives and the lives of others. I promise to help my students realize their full musical potential. I will always treat each student equally with fairness and respect, provide the best possible atmosphere for their growth, and recognize that each student is unique in how they learn and grow.

Dave's teaching style made me feel at ease and I found my first class informative, and, very inspiring.
I earned a Bachelor's of Music in Classical Guitar Performance from Capital University in Columbus, OH.
I currently teach private guitar lessons, sing and play guitar in the Chicago rock band Dead Parade, and transcribe music professionally for a wide variety of clients. Occasionally, I write articles or do interviews that appear in magazines such as Guitar World. In the past, I worked for 8 years as a guitar teacher, transcriber, consultant, and free-lance writer for a popular subscription guitar site. I also served as a guitar instructor/lecturer at Capital University's Community Music Sc
hool under the direction of renowned music educator Dr. Rebecca Johnson. Over the duration of my 16 year teaching career, I have taught over a 200 students of all ages and levels of experience.
I developed a reputation of being a musical jack of all trades. I am proficient in teaching and performing any style of guitar. However, I am best known for my rock guitar playing, songwriting abilities, classical guitar performance skills, and my ability to teach these skill sets effectively.

In my humble opinion, Matt is the best rock guitarist and teacher in Chicago. I took lessons with three other teachers in the city before working with Matt. All paled in comparison in both the playing and teaching departments. He truly makes playing and improving fun and easy! His playing speaks for itself. His teaching seems to be perfectly tailored to your goals, whatever they may be. He's literally an encyclopedia of musical knowledge.

Can't say enough good things. I've always been more of a rhythm player. The whole subject of lead guitar is really intimidating. I never knew where to begin, so I never have. I started taking lessons with Matt to see if I could get a structured approach to learning to improvise, play memorized solos, etc. He's made something that was totally intimidating very easy to understand. It really helps to have a professional teach you a logical process since there is such an overwhelming amount of information to learn and apply.
Darren December 21, 2016
I take songwriting/composition lessons with Matt every once in awhile. Prior to lessons, I thought songwriting was just a talent that some people have and some people don't. Like Matt says though, it's all about learning as much theory as you can, and working as hard as you can.
Matt is excellent at explaining complicated theory in a very simple way. Then, he always explains how this information can be applied directly to writing music. He also has an encyclopedic knowledge of songs and pieces that use various compositional techniques. So, he's always able to reference specific songs in lessons on the fly. Not to mention, Matt is an absolutely killer guitar player!
