About Barbara

Music has been an integral part of my world, playing a major role in both my personal and professional life. I embrace the chance to be immersed in it, to share my enthusiasm for and expertise in the area of the music education experience, promoting creative development and student performance skills. I am an original New Yorker, but have lived in Virginia Beach for the past 12 years. I began studying piano at the age of 8 and have not stopped playing since. It is a gift and a joy to be able to share my love of music performance with people of all ages and abilities. I have also sung in many choirs in addition to performing professionally on the piano and the guitar, both as a soloist and ensemble member. I would like to write a follow up review about Ms. Barbara.

I have been taking singing lessons for about 5 months with Ms. Barbara.
When I came to Ms. Barbara I had a few hurdles I needed help and assistance in. The end goal was to be able to have my performance on stage. Ms. Barbara composed the right vocal exercises for me to practice so my voice becomes stronger and more stable, that the breath taking is correct and will allow me to hold the notes i need better and even sing high notes.

I went on stage feeling happy, excited and confident. My performance was a success!
Thank You Ms. Barbara!!

Simeon K. Chesapeake, VA

About Simeon

Degrees held: Indiana University Jacobs School of Music - MM, PD Oberlin College and Conservatory - BM I teach private piano lessons, music theory classes, and accompanying. Students of all ages/levels are welcome. My teaching method primarily focuses on the process of learning music. Students are encouraged to make manageable goals for each lesson so that they can feel a sense of achievement throughout the entire learning process. The smaller goals keep the students motivated constantly enabling them to become a better musician. By focusing on the process of learning, students are learning a set of skills that will enable them to learn pieces quicker and allow for a more rewarding end product. They also are able to apply these learning skills to many different areas of study, which ...

Robert is absolutely wonderful! My 7 year old daughter is autistic and her attention span is very short. Robert is always very patient with her and praises her learning. He took the initiative to research different ways to approach her piano lessons so her learning was more effective. He is punctual and respectful to everyone in the house (including the needy french bulldog) He is very good at what he does. What a great person to shape the future of music!

Rachel G. Hampton, VA

About Rachel

Hi, there! My name is Rachel, and I can't wait to meet you! I've been teaching private lessons since 2002, and have loved helping my students learn to read and play, discover their own love of music, and conquer their fears of performing (so much "proud mama bear" happening!). In 2003, I earned my violin performance degree at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I also studied piano and vocal pedagogy. I'm an encouraging and fun person to work with (if I may say so myself!), and my teaching style is fun, positive, and relaxed. I have worked with many students, including some with learning disabilities, physical limitations, PTSD, and just plain ol' stage fright! I work with you to set your own goals, and I look forward to helping you reach them... It's what I love about what I do.

I have been taking theory lessons from Rachel for several months now to help learn the guitar. Learning theory can be very complex and quite a daunting task for a new music student. What I really appreciate is Rachel's patience and ability to try different approaches with me if a certain method doesn't quite resonate. She communicates and asks questions about the material she's going over to ensure that I'm comprehending what she's teaching. Another aspect that I'm very appreciative of is that Rachel gives me small, bite sized "chunks" of information that is easier to digest so that I'm not overwhelmed with learning too much at once. I intend to continue my musical journey with Rachel and also take on vocal lessons with Rachel as time permits. Her personality is very warm and personable and her commitment to helping others pursue their music goals really shines through. I consider Rachel to be a very well rounded musician and a master at her craft. I admire her musicianship and hope to attain her level of confidence and abilities as I pursue my own musical journey!!!

I have always wanted to learn to play the viola but time has always been a fickle mistress with me so the viola I bought in late 2014 barely got played because of nursing school. I had an online violin lesson with Taylor Davis to support her new album and it gave me the idea to start taking lessons through skype. I spent my time looking through all the instructors on takelessons and chose Rachel because she plays the five string violin, which helps her understand both worlds and what can cross to violas and what can't. I took the plunge and signed up for lessons with her and it was one of the best decisions I've made.

Rachel is very knowledgeable and willing to work around a schedule, she's very quick to praise you when you get something right and also quick to correct to prevent bad habits from forming. Due to my inability to take lessons in real life I chose to take lessons from her but now that I am taking lessons from her I don't think I'd change to an in person instructor if I had the option.

Thank you Rachel for taking on someone who loves classical music and no idea how to play and starting me on the journey of one day playing the Walton viola concerto and the Vieuxtemps viola sonata.
Lydia M. Chesapeake, VA

About Lydia

When I was about to turn 8, I asked my parents for a violin as a birthday present! I have loved playing ever since. My mom is a piano teacher, so I learned to play the piano as well. I have played in orchestras, chamber strings, and quartets in Paraguay, Brasil, Guatemala, and the United States. The beauty of music is that it crosses all borders! I was born and raised in Paraguay but I came to the USA to go to college. Currently, I am working on a doctorate in Clinical Psychology. I'm optimistic, responsible, and want to help others reach their full potential.

Introduction to Reading Violin Tabs
Tablature is a form of musical notation that was invented to make reading music easier for fretted and string instruments like guitar, bass, and violin. The premise is operationally-based, meaning that rather than showing rhythm, duration, and pitch, violin tabs will show the player where and when to place their fingers on the instrument. For an improvising musician, violin tabs allow you to improvise while staying within the chord structure of a song. Tablature-style notation is most commonly
