BJ M.

Seattle, WA

About BJ

I grew up studying violin under the Suzuki method for over 13 years at the University of Louisville School of Music Preparatory School, my listening and playing skills were nurtured at the young age of five. I performed with the Louisville Youth Orchestra and other ensembles increasing my skills and confidence playing the instrument. A confidence that I can bring out in you as your violin teacher. Beyond the classical foundation of Suzuki's collection, the violin has afforded me a unique opportunity to express myself in a wide range of musical styles and venues: * I have supplied harmonies on acoustic covers and classic rock numbers at college open mics and coffee shops. * I rocked out with an indie-pop band on famous Seattle stages like The Showbox, The Crocodile and ...

I have learned more in 3 lessons with BJ than I did in a year with my last teacher. He has clear and helpful exercises to fix my bad habits in how I bow. We aren't into actual playing yet, but I expect things will progress well for me.

His place is easy to get to and comfortable. He is prompt, organized and manages to be efficient at fitting a lot of teaching into the time we have. I did shift from half hour lessons to a full hour, as the half hour was not enough time to really finish a topic for us.

I'm very happy with the experience and am so glad to be playing again.

Music Performance
This guy is a true PRO

I have not personally taken lessons from B.J. Montoya, but I am a colleague of his and have created and performed music with him off and on over the last ten years. WHat I can confidently and boldly say is that B. J. is masterful at the violin and fiddle, and truly knows all aspects of the language of music. IF you take lessons from him, you won't just learn songs; you will learn artistry, technique, music theory, ear-training skills, music appreciation, and most of all a PASSION FOR MUSIC - which B.J. cannot HELP but to pass on to his students. I say this because I have always respected and admired his true passion for creative muical expression on the violin.

Besides all that, B.J. is a sincere, super-friendly, and laid-back guy who will help any student - at any level - feel comfortable and at ease. His ability to offer warm support and encouragement - AND make the lessons FUN - will surpass any other violin teacher - I can pretty much guarantee that.

I highly recommend B.J. as a music teacher.

I'm brand new to guitar, and Evan was recommended by a friend. He came out to my house and gave me my very first lessons and they were great! I'm a slow learner, and he has been super supportive! I think I'm getting the hang of this...thanks Evan!!!

I'm an intermediate guitar player looking to move forward, and with Evan, even after just a handful of lessons, I made serious strides with my playing. A very talented guitar player, an acute listener, and a very patient teacher. I highly recommend him.

I have found /Evan to be very easy to relate to. He listens to what you have to say, and tailors his instruction to your level and your goals. He very obviously knows what he is doing and is able to relate that to his instruction.

What a terrible experience. I signed up for lessons for my wife from Brett as a gift because he listed times that would work for my wife given that we have a young daughter, and have a hard time making time for lessons. Brett told us 3 days before the lesson that the time wouldn't work, then simply never showed for the rescheduled first lesson. Worse, he simply refused to do scheduling via email (he would leave voicemails and failed to return my wife's call when she called back as they were playing phone tag), and then told us he had another commitment during the slot we had supposedly reserved for him. Worse, he failed to update the site as he continually cancelled lessons and never showed up for scheduled times. I now have a huge hassle of getting a refund on the money I paid for lessons as opposed to a lovely gift for my wife. Life's too short and we're too busy for such an awful experience.

Great teacher for my young daughter

Brett has been a great teacher for my 5 year old daughter. She is just learning the basics of piano and Brett has been great at expanding her skill sets. She really enjoys practicing with him and actually looks forward to when he comes over every week!

John Paul is an amazingly talented artist (performer, writer, teacher, singer, producer, composer, director...the list is seriously too long). We have worked together as professional singers, and I have collaborated with him on an album that he wrote/produced/recorded/edited himself. He is a kind and inspiring person who LOVES music more than anything in the world. I wholeheartedly recommend him to students of all ages who want to find and express their creative voice in the world.

Best teacher ever

JP has been teaching Mya for almost 2 years (since she was 6 years old) and Mya has been loving each lesson, can't wait for the next one, and has grown in many ways, that have exceeded our expectations.
JP is extremely patient, always positive, and knows how to reinforce the confidence whenever needed, provide clues for improvement that are very useful and positive. JP is an outstanding teacher.
The lessons are always a good mix of warming up, theory, singing, expressing emotions, new creations and also recording.
JP brings the best out of Mya, and makes her feel that he is also enjoying it.

Rian D.

About Rian

His middle school music teacher recognized Rian’s musical talent and gave him his first public performance opportunity during the school’s annual musical. Rian would go on to play piano for the middle school productions for 3 more years. As Rian progressed into high school his talent increased as well. As a freshman in high school Rian successfully tried-out for the award winning JFK High School Jazz Band and soon took over as the primary pianist. While performing at a high school jazz band festival he was singularly awarded the “Best Rhythm Section” award, a prize usually given to a band’s entire rhythm section. Rian concluded his high school musical career with a trip to the Washington Music Educators ...

rian is a good teacher

he is the only piano teacher i have had. i was teaching myself piano and was given some lessons as a gift, and i chose him somewhat randomly from the teachers listed on takelessons dot com. i had several lessons from him and he gave me lots of good ideas. i would have continued with him, but for circumstances out of my control. i would recommend him as a teacher. he has lots of experience and can tailor his teaching depending on what you want to do

Rian is patient which is what I needed. He makes you feel comfortable and has a low key way of pointing out areas for improvement without offending.Would recommend him to others who want to play piano, regardless of how old you are.

What Are the Best Violin Brands for Beginners?
When you’re first starting to play an instrument, it's important to find a compromise between affordability and good quality.
