About John

I've been playing music for over twenty years as a brass player, pianist, guitarist, composer, and electronic musician. I've studied and performed across the country—starting in Seattle, then New York and the northeast, and finally here in Los Angeles.

As a performer, I have trained and play extensively on the French horn, trumpet, trombone, piano, and guitar. I perform in a variety of styles—from classical to jazz and pop/rock styles.

As a composer and sound designer, I work in a variety of settings, from composing for orchestra, string quartet, percussion, and groups of all shapes and
sizes, to designing sound for theater and film.

I earned my Bachelor's degree at Bennington College in Vermont and my Master's degree at CalArts. I play all around LA as a freelance orchestral musician, in my brass quartet, a studio hornist (recorded on will.i.am's last album, The Grasshopper Lies Heavy, and with Horse's Mouth, to name a few), and in various other groups. I have taught at Bennington College, Summer Sonatina Piano School, Sage City Symphony's Young Composers Project, CalArts, Barnsdall Park's Junior Art Center, and Santa Monica Music Center. I have been teaching privately since high school and love working with students to meet their individual goals in music.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide my own instrument for demonstration and group playing when applicable. I provide sheet music and method books for use in lessons or temporary loan. I expect students to have their own instrument and music stand for use during lessons. If using electric guitar, they should have their own amplifier. In theory or songwriting lessons, they should have their own staff paper. I ask students to purchase their own method books and music when needed.

Max O.

Santa Monica, CA

Experienced trumpet teacher/professional player of ten years. My goal is to inspire and help each of my students grow with custom tailored lessons primarily using exercises which I create specifically for each student. I make sure that all my students have a very strong understanding of the foundation and basics of trumpet playing so they learn to play the correct way from the start. I am well versed in many genres new and old from jazz and classical to funk, pop, reggae and hip-hop. Students must have their own instrument. I provide a music stand and blank staff paper for students coming to my home location while students I drive to must have music stand.

About Max

Max O. is a working freelance trumpet player residing in the Los Angeles area. With many years of music education combined with hard work within the field, Max has developed a career for himself which keeps him busy as a performer, studio musician, arranger and private teacher.

Max's love for music began at an early age. While living in Baja Mexico, he began playing guitar at the age of eleven. After moving to Sandpoint Idaho he soon began studying trumpet in the sixth grade. Upon graduating from Sandpoint High School, he studied for a year at Eastern Washington University and soon transf
erred to Citrus College in Glendora to study under famed studio trumpeters Charlie Davis and Robert Slack. While at Citrus, Max auditioned into and held the lead trumpet chair in the Citrus Wind Symphony, Night Shift Pop Rock group, and Blue Note Swing Orchestra.

Max began to work as a freelance musician while still enrolled at Citrus and has continued into the present day. He has performed, toured and recorded with artists of all styles with the likes of Gwen Stefani, Matisyahu, Yari More, Tribal Seeds, Iration, The Dirty Heads, The Elliot Duetsch Big Band, Natural Vibrations, Mike Pinto, Debbie Boone, Quinto Sol, Pato Banton, the Gumbo Brothers and many more. Max has been fortunate to have toured nationally and internationally to places including Hawaii, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Canada, Diego Garcia Island and Singapore. He is also very active within the musical theatre scene and has performed in the orchestras for such shows as Annie, Kiss Me Kate, Hairspray, Les Miserables, Chicago, The Producers, and many more.

On top of all his freelance work, Max also heads a nine-piece Reggae, Funk, and Soul band known as "Bodhi Rock." Which is made up of his other freelancing musician friends who also attended Citrus. He is also gearing up to record his first Funk and Soul solo EP under the name Maxwell's Funky Soul this year.

Max, is great teacher. He understands the students needs and tailors his pace accordingly. He is easily able to spot a weak spot in a student's technique and help them correct it easily. He is also immensely patient and easygoing.

His skills with the trumpet are top notch. He makes trumpet playing so easy. Max is easily one of the best music teachers that I have come across.

Thomas K.

Glendale, CA

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

An instrumentalist since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach beginning trumpet lessons.

About Thomas

A Los Angeles-based composer, orchestrator, conductor, and educator, Thomas has earned a reputation as a reliable and effective music instructor. Thomas instructs students in piano, woodwinds, trumpet, music theory, and composition. He has led multiple after-school classes and private lessons (both online and in-person) for instrumentalists as an official teacher for Piano Keys 4 Kids, MusIQ Club, Music Teachers Network, and Music Lessons on Wheels. He has received praise over his varied and individual approaches to teaching that focus on realizing the full potential of his students, whom rang
e from kindergarteners to adults.

Thomas served as the arranger and orchestrator for the full-length stage musical Way Back When. His film credits include independent films HeartFelt, Return of the Dragon Sword, A Sense of Sound, and Disregarded, as well as the award-winning documentary GeoFORCE: A Journey to Understanding. He also provides original music to dancers. He has received commissions for concert music by the American Festival Pops Orchestra, Brigham Young University–Idaho concert band, Jazz 4 Justice, and the LDS Church. He has produced three concerts of his original music, including Emerge & Ascend, a benefit concert that raised $1,500. He has also acted as conductor in a number of studio recording sessions.

Thomas received his Masters of Music in Film Scoring from the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program in Seattle, Washington where he studied with two-time Emmy winning film and television composer Hummie Mann. He received his Bachelor of Music in Composition from George Mason University where he studied composition under band composer Mark Camphouse and electronic composer Jesse Guessford, and conducting under Anthony Maiello. In the area of performance, he has studied saxophone under Rick Parrell (U.S. Army Band), Tyler Kuebler (USAF Airmen of Note), and Sandon Mayhew; and piano with John Healey and Danny Beal.

Originally from Boise, Idaho, Thomas currently resides in Los Angeles. A melodious and colorful composer, he hopes to continue bringing evocative, contemporary music to audiences everywhere.

William A.

Playa del Rey, CA

I Have been teaching for 10 + years.Part of my daily focus is on relaxed breathing and generating a big beautiful tone for every note played. Long tones are something that I include in my daily regiment. Lots of dexterity exercises, range building, as well as endurance.

Another aspect of my daily regiment is improvisation. focusing on major/minor/ whole tone/diminished scales/ II-Vs in all keys and playing changes!

Lastly RESTING as MUCH as you PRACTICE is very IMPORTANT!

Charles O.

Los Angeles, CA

Hi!

My name is Charlie. I am a twenty three year old comedian and musician from London (moved to LA a couple of years ago). I've been playing music for twelve years, with an emphasis in jazz, and love passing on what I know to others. Music is one of life's ultimate treats and I consider it a privilege to get to share it with people. I'm a fun, smart, easy going guy who can get you started on a number of instruments if you'd like. Or we can just rock that trumpet!

About Charles

I'm all about fun. I believe traditional music tuition can often stifle creativity by quickly getting the student bogged down in technicalities. Everyone knows someone who gave up on learning an instrument (maybe you even did) and it's such a shame! My approach is to put the inherent fun and playfulness of music at the centre of everything. I believe if you instil true musical enthusiasm in a child then they will naturally find the discipline they need to tackle any technical challenges they face. Thus, I aim to get the student enjoying their instrument as quickly as possible, to be able to pl
ay something fun for themselves or with with me or with one of their peers. Music is a language, a mode of communication, so to do it in confinement is, I believe, against the nature of the beast. Let's pick an instrument and start having fun with it!

I am a musician, comedian, and visual artist here in LA. Born and raised in London I moved to California for university and have stayed put ever since. I am a highly energetic, enthusiastic young man who finds passing musical knowledge onto kids the most rewarding work there is (it's so much better than adults, Im afraid to say). Their naturally rich imaginations make for wonderful students and I am continually astounded by their ability to create beautiful music.

When I'm not making music I'm in a comedy club making people laugh or at home painting silly pictures. My other interests are fashion, theatre, fine art, food, and people.

Charlie was such a fantastic teacher! I came in knowing nothing about song writing and composition and have come out being confident in my own abilities (he also helped me work on my singing)! Charlie took time and really helped me find my voice as a song writer. Not only is he extremely, extremely knowledgeable, but is also so enthusiastic and ready to share with you what he knows! He truly defines what a creative spirit is! Highly recommend!
