Joe is not only an incredible person and an all-around great guy, but he's also the best drummer I've ever had the pleasure of playing in bands with over the years. And his skills don't stop there - he is a very talented and patient teacher. And he's great with kids too! My daughter just had her first lesson with him and she loved it! Joe's great sense of humor and positive reinforcement really engaged my daughter (who is a hyper-active toddler) and she learned a lot in just her first lesson. I'm looking forward to her becoming a rockstar under Joe's guidance and to many more lessons. Thanks Joe!

Not only is Joe's musicianship fantastic, but he's incredibly patient and easy to work with. He knows how to break the ice with a new student with humor and a lighthearted attitude!

I first met Joe because he was my personal trainer at the gym he used to work for. I then followed him out of the gym when he decided to start doing it on his own. Little did I know that he was also an amazing drummer and all-around professional musician!

Needless to say, Joe knows how to teach!

I have been extremely fortunate to work with Joe over the past few years. On top of being one of the best people I have ever met in my life, he is also one of the best musicians I have ever met. Although his musical forte is drums, his knowledge of other instruments contributes to provide an extremely well-rounded instructional approach.

Patient, versatile, and encouraging!

Go with Joe!!!

Jan P.

Los Angeles, CA

Jan has been teaching drums for over 6 years to students ranging from 4 years old to adults in their forties.

He teaches exercises and techniques that allow students to break down the movements of their hands and feet on the drum kit into specific strokes that can then methodically be practiced to attain proficiency, control and speed on the instrument.

To keep things fun and interesting we learn covers in a variety of styles and difficulty levels, and develop our reading skills to further our understanding and technique.

Jan will also allow his students to write their own parts as they progress on the kit by picking up either the guitar or bass and giving them the chance to jam with another instrument, which most students love to do and have a lot of fun with.

Lessons are held with two drum kits so students can easily copy their teachers movements.

About Jan

Learning an instrument in a music recording studio environment has many advantages and is a lot more fun, creative and rewarding. From your teacher jumping on different instruments
for you to develop your independence and timing as a player and
recording prepared projects you've been working on,
to playing at a higher volume to get to know your gear's real sound, the rocking' memories you'll walk away with will fuel your inspiration to practice and improve fast.

My focus is to help you achieve your goals on your instrument.

With each individual student, I offer exercises, songs and t
echniques to practice that will help you to immediately begin seeing positive results. I believe that anyone can play an instrument and take their next step in music. It makes a big difference if you have the right teacher to help you learn the music you love. Most people that have attained musical proficiency had someone that took the time to guide them along their way. Much of what is thought of as difficult to play or understand in music is only mysterious until it is explained and practiced.

Jan has been teaching professionally since 2001. He graduated with honors from Musicians Institute in Hollywood after earning a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and IT in Germany. He has been playing music for over 24 years, in bands ever since age 16 as a lead guitarist, bass player and singer. In his newest band he is on drums and vocals. He built a music recording studio in the city in 2004 at which he teaches and has engineered and mixed many bands since. He has also taught a guitar and band afterschool program at Brightstar Middle School Charter Academy in Los Angeles, fronts the band Audiocination, plays lead guitar in Clark 8, bass with Radius and drums with OG Booker T.

*** Specialties ***
I am mainly a funky rock and blues guitar player, and have been in bands on bass, drums and with my own project, Audiocination, on guitar and vocals. There are so many different styles that get mixed into rock that I find it important to introduce my students to a lot of them, so they can find the one that suits them best.

Super Happy

I am currently a drum student of Jan's and I couldn't be happier. He is a really great teacher. He obviously cares a lot about what he does and he is very good at understanding what each student needs individually to keep moving forward at a pace that is right for the student. He strikes an excellent balance between keeping the fun part of music alive (playing music!) and making sure that you receive solid technique instruction as well. He is super excellent at helping you understand how the things you are learning will build together over time (this helps a lot when some things are frustrating to make your body and mind do at first). You do have to do some exercises, but his focus is all related to working towards having fun and playing music. If you're a drum student, even as you're getting your first beats down he plays guitar with you right away (the first lesson in my case). It's really terrific to get a feeling for what it's like to play with other people from the very beginning. I can be self conscious about doing things around other people before I feel like I know what I'm doing. Playing with him right from the beginning helped me toss that aside without it taking hold of me this time, because, well, it's pretty darn fun to be completely honest. If you take lessons from Jan I am pretty sure you will feel very fortunate, as I do, to have found such talented and supportive instructor.

Feedback

Speaking for Malcolm: Malcolm is enjoying the lesson sessions with Jan. Speaking for myself: I appreciate him always being timely and teaching my son by using the type of music that he is interested in. This helps him to stay interested and motivates him to practice.

Joan has been teaching our 5 year old daughter in our home and has incredible patience and finds ways to make it fun for her as well as educational. She also was flexible when we needed to change our lesson times from a weekday to a weekend morning time slot and was always on time and very professional. I would highly recommend her as a teacher for a young beginner!

Joan is very patient as an instructor. I appreciate the feedback she has given me on nuances in my body posture, my grip on the sticks, and seating position to help me be comfortable during the lessons. I began drum lessons with her early in my pregnancy and she has been very accommodating to my busy and hectic schedule.

Trevor L.

Venice, CA

I've been playing the drums for 14+ years. My Godfather Jimmy Chamberlain influenced me from a young age.

About Trevor

Graduating from Le Cordon Bleu: Hollywood, working at many restaurants, and cooking for so long, I can teach you the fundamentals of cooking. This ranges from knife skills, food history, cookery, and more! My other skill set is drumming. I've taken lessons for a few years, but I have been drumming for over 12 years. My main influence has been my godfather who's the previous drummer of The Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy Chamberlain. I have already taught a few how to drum and cook nicely. I would not say I'm amazing at these things, but I can definitely get a good foundation to build upon.

*** Stu
dio Equipment ***
Drums: Roland electric set, full set from Siamese Dream album of the Smashing Pumpkins, and a Djembe (African drum)

Cooking: Many cooking utensils, pots/pans, knife kit, etc.

Skateboarding: I have been Skateboarding for 12+ years, I can help Beginners and intermediates to become better! Also I can provide a Skateboard, but you must bring your own helmet/pads if you need them.

Ryan S.

Los Angeles, CA

Experienced drum teacher of 7 years! For beginners, my lesson plan is simple : 1. we start off with basic exercises from "Alfred's Drum Method Book" series, 2. we go over two to three drum beats, 3. we practice sheet-music (typically songs chosen by the student). The time devoted to each portion of the lesson is totally adjustable / up to the student! In other words, you will learn what you want to learn at your own pace. Lessons can be done at my apartment, your place, or online.

About Ryan

Experienced cello and drum player with a BFA degree in Music Composition (CalArts). Have recorded professionally for tv shows such as "Glee," "Entertainment Tonight," and "Extra."

Ryan was great!! He took the time to find out what my level of knowledge was and we took off from there. I like the fact that he has his cello and plays along to help guide the student. I'm looking forward to my next lesson and all the practice time!!

I'm very glad I found Ryan. I was a bit hesitant to take cello lessons because I'm a male in my mid 20s, I've never played, and I was intimidated by the whole idea. Ryan makes it fun and stress-free, he's very patient, and most importantly - he cares! I know he cares about my progress because he proactively met with me on a non-lesson day so that I could tape up my cello and repair the broken string in order to have enough time to practice. I'm very comfortable with Ryan as my instructor and I look forward to my continued progress through his excellent guidance.

Finding an individual with the credentials or capacity to develop your technique isn't really the difficult part in searching for a teacher. As a twenty-something in the early stages of developing my career, I place a much higher value in being inspired.

Despite having no prior experience with the cello and having little time to practice in between lessons, Ryan does a great job in simplifying the musical concepts and subtly drilling in the key points-- so much so that I can actually hear the improvement with every session. Not only is he very patient and attentive, Ryan also shows an obvious enthusiasm towards his craft that is highly infectious.

The lessons themselves are thorough, but still engaging. Given my hectic lifestyle, I was initially uncertain about committing to a new skill and figured my interest in the cello would waver. I'm still no cello aficionado--however, this first set of lessons has surprisingly heightened that initial interest and convinced me to keep at it.

Bottom Line: If you're looking for a teacher or considering the instrument, I would definitely recommend giving Ryan a shot!
