Azuri M.

Culver City, CA

We will study the classic motifs in music from composers such as Bach all the way to Andres Segovia, etc.

About Azuri

I Love music, and I love people. I feel that music is and has historically been a way of interpreting and expressing all the diversity in life and our experiences and that our instruments are our tool of expressing, whether it be the drum, guitar, piano, voice, sitar, etc. My inevitable goal here is to help you(student) obtain the technical, theoretical understanding to help you express your own message and story musically and or achieve any musical standard that one connects too and wishes too achieve.

Teaching Philosophy -
My teaching philosophy is really built on well rounded communica
tion and multiple facets of explanation and examples so that a student can truly understand and learn a topic, surrounded in a very humorous, light and supportive environment.
I feel that along with being provided good information a student learns better and feels more motivated to learn when there is a balance of positive support and confidence building accompanied by constructive criticism and examples/information that can help a student assess what ever walls they may be meeting in their musical growth.

I understand that all students/artists have different goals they wish to achieve. So it is very important to me to accommodate each individuals needs and wants and help them grow in the fields they wish too; However, In that I have played music for a long time I understand there are certain things that a student may not have been exposed to yet, it is also important to me to also supply a well rounded education environment along with the fields in which the student wants to focus specifically on.

I truly believe music has an amazing influence on the world and has the ability to change peoples way of thinking. Therefore, I try and keep an open awareness to all music so I can understand all the different musical languages utilized to communicate to people, and don't believe I will ever know them all. I hold it to attention to influence my students somewhat similarly so that they can shape the landscape of how we communicate musically in the future.

I also try and be very patient with my students, empathizing, knowing that when I feel rushed it makes it more difficult to comprehend, remember and allocate a topic or musical piece. I love watching the gears run in my students head so I try and provide information that pushes a student but is within their musical computation abilities.

HUMOR is very important. I like to break people out of their shell by telling a joke and hopefully getting one back so they feel more comfortable and free. One of a musicians worst enemies are nerves I feel that keeping things light-hearted and maybe even a little small talk can be very helpful to a students development and growth in a topic. After all Music is meant to be fun and we should enjoy every moment of it, in fact we should enjoy every moment in life period.

I understand music requires focus and discipline and I have certain expectation of a student to understand that and practice. You can't buy chops you can't buy music theory etc. you can get help but eventually your the one who must understand it and play it.

I am here to help you. Based on what I know and what I have extensively studied I will do all that I can to help you achieve your musical goals. I am here to answer your questions and help you grow. I love teaching because I love sharing knowledge as long as your seek it, it is here for you. Otherwise, I'd still love to hear some jokes.

In short I love teaching and I love seeing my students accomplish things and get what they want. I am here to help that happen and here to help you elevate your skills and perspectives on music.

Education -
I was born touring with the grateful dead and my whole life has been saturated in music. I received my first guitar when I was 11 and it has been my life since. Soloing within a week I started gigging soon after being acclaimed by some as a child prodigy and now have been doing so ever since.

-After studying extensively on my own (self taught) for 2 years or so, after which I received a full scholarship to a performing arts private school in Santa Monica called Garden of Angels where I studied guitar with Bruce Buckingham (Professor at Musicians Institute and nationally acclaimed guitar player) along with many others. While attending this school I also studied in music ensembles, and musical appreciation along with dance, acting, art/painting etc. and various other art forms.

I consider it supremely important to be well rounded and I have a history of achieving in diverse musical environments. I can't wait to meet you all and begin to learn together and help you achieve your musical aspirations.

Much Love,
Azuri Zen M.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm very disciplined but am also very light hearted. It's important for me to assess things seriously so that one can understand a topic or piece of information; yet, it also important to me for a student to feel comfortable and relaxed when learning and performing so I try and joke and keep things positive.

I generate my lessons based on the individuals needs and therefore draw from various curriculum sources and various other sources and examples such as : MI curriculum for ear training, theory, single string technique, reading, rhythm guitar as well as the real book other artist books(Eric Clapton, etc.) the guitar players hand book, Bach pieces and self developed curriculum relative to the topic at hand and students personally goals amongst many others.

-Beginning students within three months of consistent lessons should have the ability to solo and playing chords to songs that they are interested in and songs provided in the lesson along with a basic understanding of the major scale and its relationship to all of the diatonic music.

-intermediate students should have an elevated understanding of scale and chord patters along with the theory that explains modal relationships and use of these concepts.

-Advanced students should learn all of diatonic scale shapes and modes assuming they don't already know them in which case their specifically situation will be assessed

-Professional students I expect to have specific questions therefore where they grow should be largely subjective.

Overall, in a short amount of time on a scale of 1 - 10 I expect to in three months at-least elevate a students musical abilities one full point if not more.

Azuri is a fun teacher!

I love working with Azuri. He is patient and encourages me. Everytime I have a lesson he says something that opens my eyes. It usually just takes that one meaningful statement he says throughout the lesson for the time there to be worth it all. Moreover, he is a great teacher! It's very fun learning from him.

About Edwin

Hello! Thank you for your interest in taking guitar/piano/music lessons.

I am a professional teacher/studio musician/performer/producer with over 17 years of private teaching experience and a graduate of the University of Miami Studio Music and Jazz program in 2002 specializing in the guitar.

I am available to teach guitar(acoustic, electric, classical) for all levels, ages, and styles(pop to folk, rock to soul, world to classical) in English, Spanish and Japanese.

Other subjects taught include bass guitar, piano/keyboard, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, harmonium, classical percussion, mu
sic theory, composition(all styles from pop to classical), ear training, and studio production/engineering/mixing.

Born in Cali, Colombia on April 1979, I began my musical endeavors studying the piano at the age of 6. Early on I had the opportunity to play percussion in the school symphony while at the same time developed an intense interest in the instrument that would become my true love, the guitar.

During 1996-98 I studied jazz guitar at the New World School of the Arts music program under the direction of J.B. Dyas and Dr. Roby George. Upon graduation, I was immediately accepted to the University of Miami jazz guitar program under the direction of Randall Dollahan. It was during this time that I also refined my skills as a classical guitarist and as a composer/arranger. In addition, I began passing my knowledge onto friends and eventually began working as a teacher.

My ability to play almost any genre of music is the fruit of past experience playing with an impressive variety of music groups, including jazz combos, symphony orchestras, Andean world music ensembles, and several rock and pop groups as well. As a studio guitarist I have recorded for various artists including Jaci Velasquez, Carlos Ponce, Alexandre Pires, and Noelia.

Every one of you is unique and there are many possible paths to reach your goals in music.

With my background and music industry experience, I am able to customize my lessons for you so that you can reach your desired goals. We will take some time to find out where your passion lies in music and I will use my experience and knowledge to create a customized lesson-plan that will allow us to focus on reaching your desired goals and at the same time maintain a well rounded music education.

I find this to be key in making the lessons and your practice sessions very enjoyable, fun and laid back - knowing that everything we practice, play and talk about is in line with your goals as a student.

I will also be playing along with you and demonstrating everything that we're working on - music is meant to be shared and played with others and it is important to have that experience of interaction from early on in your lessons.

Edwin is amazing. My 5 year old is pretty distracted and stubborn. Edwin made the lesson very fun for him and he actually learned a lot in the short lesson. He was very patient. He taught him not only the instrument itself but started teaching him some rhythm and music theory as well. As soon as my son matures a little more and is ready for lessons we will definitely pick Edwin!

Brian P.

Culver City, CA

Brian has a degree in Classical Guitar Performance from California State University at Los Angeles and has been teaching classical guitar to students of all ages in the Los Angeles area for more than 20 years. Brian's special talent as a teacher of this challenging instrument is a unique ability that combines patience with enthusiasm and a deep appreciation of the genre to help his students learn, improve and achieve mastery of technique and develop their understanding of the repertoire. Students of all ages are welcome!

Below see Brian's teaching philosophy in his own words:

MY APPROACH:
I focus on four areas that I think are essential to being a good music teacher:

* the uniqueness of each student;
* the fact that enjoyment (fun!) maximizes learning;
* the importance of proper technique and an understanding of music theory to build self-confidence;
* the development of musicianship through performance.

EACH STUDENT IS UNIQUE:
My first interest with each new ...

About Brian

Brian discovered his talent and passion for teaching while still in college, and has been teaching guitar and piano in Southern California for over 20 years. Gifted at teaching students of all ages and abilities, he combines patience, creativity, imagination and boundless enthusiasm with solid professional training and experience. Brian also has over 10 years experience teaching piano and guitar to blind and autistic students.

A lifelong musician, Brian received his first musical training at the age of 4 and 5 years when his actor/singer Dad and musically talented Grandma taught him to si
ng and play the mandolin. He began piano lessons at age 5, and formal guitar instruction at the age of 10 years.

By the time he was a 14-year-old high school student, Brian was performing as lead guitarist in rock bands around Southern California, developing mastery of rock guitar and blues performance and improvisation. Brian went on to complete a Bachelor's Degree in Classical Guitar Performance from California State University, Los Angeles.

Passionate about all kinds of music, Brian's studies include choral music and conducting, Gregorian chant (at the Monastery of St. Pierre de Solesmes, France), and Master Classes with Andrés Segovia and Christopher Parkening. In 1984, he participated as a member of the Honor Choir for the ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles, which included recording of original music by Philip Glass for the Olympic Games under the direction of David L. Wolper and Mr. Glass.

As a jazz guitarist, Brian continues to grow musically in association with his colleagues of the Naomi Jazz Group, and other close musical friends who include students of the late, great Ted Greene.

MY APPROACH:
I focus on four areas that I think are essential to being a good music teacher:

• the uniqueness of each student;
• the fact that enjoyment (fun!) maximizes learning;
• the importance of proper technique and an understanding of music theory to build self-confidence;
• the development of musicianship through performance.

EACH STUDENT IS UNIQUE:
My first interest with each new student is to discover how he or she learns, and then to apply appropriate teaching techniques to maximize their potential. I gear my lesson plans to the individual and strive to optimize the learning potential of the student.

ENJOYMENT MAXIMIZES LEARNING:
In a lesson with me you can expect to never be bored, to laugh a lot, learn a lot, be positively engaged emotionally and challenged intellectually. I believe that learning is maximized when the student is enjoying the experience, and is faced with challenges appropriate to their skill level. I aim to make learning music fun, choosing musical selections to learn in the style and genre that relate to the student's interests and aspiration.

TECHNIQUE & UNDERSTANDING OF MUSIC THEORY TO BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE:
When my students perform in concerts, recitals, juries, auditions, recording sessions or simply for friends and family, they have self-confidence because they know precisely the "how" and "why" of everything required to perform well. My goal with students is to build a solid foundation in instrumental technique and thorough understanding of Music Theory at their appropriate level.

PERFORMANCE:
On a monthly basis, all my students practice performing pieces they are working on during the lesson time, with family/friends as an audience if desired and appropriate, and/or using digital recording to help the student develop a critical ear for their own playing.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Music stands, guitar/s and guitar stands, Dynarelle cushion, footrests, Korg 88 fully--weighted digital keyboard, Zoom H4 digital recorder.

As well, I have guitars and equipment both for teaching and performance of various styles, as below. Students will have the opportunity to learn about, play and become familiar with any of these instruments/equipment according to their interests and skill levels.

OTHER EQUIPMENT:

AMPS: Fender Twin reverb

*** Travel Equipment ***
Guitar stands, guitar/s, Zoom H4 digital recorder. Generally I do not transport my Korg 88 keyboard to the student's home for lessons, but I can if necessary. However, I do require that piano students have their own piano/keyboard or at least reliable access to one for practice between lessons.

Guitar students should also have their own guitar. I can advise on appropriate instruments and can help students find a suitable guitar for their learning level and price range.

Bryan's love for music started at a young age. He began taking private guitar lessons at the age of 10 learning the basics. Very helpful!

Bryan has been a very helpful, knowledgeable and flexible guitar teacher. He uses my interests and questions to drive lesson content. I find personally that understanding the music theory behind what I'm learning to play is very helpful, so we've spent a lot of time breaking things down. He's very knowledgeable. He also does a good job of explaining how he uses his intuition as a guitar player and musician, which helps me develop intuition of my own.I would definitely recommend Bryan!

Matthew I

Culver City, CA

About Matthew J

I have been playing guitar for 14 years and teaching guitar and bass for 7 years. I have worked as a private and group guitar instructor at several music education establishments in the Chicago area and in Eugene, Oregon as well. I have also worked as a band coach for youth groups, where I taught them cover songs, helped them write their own songs and prepared them for live performances.
I studied at Columbia College Chicago majoring in Music Composition and Classical Guitar.
I also studied classical guitar at Lane C.C. and received an Associate of Arts Degree where I studied with Unive
rsity of Oregon Classical Guitarist John Jarvie.
I started taking private guitar lessons as a teenager for several years and played in my high school jazz band along with original rock bands. While in high school, I was able to study with popular Chicago rock virtuoso guitarist Kevin M. Buck, where I first learned music theory and was inspired me to be more studious with the guitar.

I have performed in rock/modern bands for 12 years as an electric guitarist and also for 4 years as a solo acoustic guitarist mixing Bossa Nova, Classical Guitar and original compositions into my performance repertoire.

*** Lesson Details ***
I'm a patient teacher that's passionate about guitar and helping students reach their musical goals whether they are casual players or serious musicians. For beginners, I use Hal Leonard instructional guitar books along with paper handouts and sheet music. I believe it's important for everyone to learn the fundamentals of music to create a strong base of skills in order to continue playing and learning music throughout one's life. For more experienced players, I like to teach various modern rock/pop songs, classical guitar songs, picking patterns, finger picking patters, improvisation, scales and music theory. I teach nylon string acoustic, steel string acoustic guitar and electric guitar and bass
I believe the most basic goal for a guitar student is to be able to play a song in it's entirety, whether it's by themselves or with other musicians/music students. I believe that some of the most important music skills are learned while actually playing with other musicians. It is crucial when learning an instrument to be able to play in 'real time'; playing music with a steady sense of rhythm.

*** Specialties ***
I teach Classical Guitar, Brazilian Jazz, bass guitar, rock, pop, blues, funk and folk guitar using method books, sheet music and guitar tablature.
