Kirk M.

Joliet, IL

Music theory lessons as applied to the Piano. Teaches elements from the very basics on so there are no gaps in the students learning process. More experienced students will be tested on the very basics, all the way up to their current level, to make sure they are provided with a complete workable knowledge of every facet of basic piano theory.

About Kirk

About two decades ago, I bought my first guitar from a pawn shop in Las Vegas and have been playing and loving music ever since. During and after college, I spent most of my time in the music scene of Las Vegas. I also spent much of that time (about 12 years) studying and gathering information about playing and music composition.

Benefits from taking these lessons...
I have decades of music theory education, self teaching and playing experience. The unique lesson course I have developed can easily benefit any student. From the very first lesson, I teach the universal language o
f music theory (the structure of all music) and show how to apply the theory. A student can then apply the same knowledge to any instrument, including singing. The student can also read music, write songs, improvise, understand how to make music, and know why music works the way it does. Once a student has mastered the basics of music structure, they can play and sing with other musicians and even teach other people, how to play.

What students can expect when taking lessons?
Upon arriving at my home, the student will be greeted by my smiling face. We will then continue to the roomy, open and comfortable studio space, featuring computers and musical instruments for both the student and the teacher. We will start by talking about the student'™s goals, ambitions and about how much or little the student already knows about playing the music theory. We will also talk about what will be expected and go over a basic outline of what will be taught. At the same time, I will be taking notes so we can monitor the student's desired progress in the future. We then immediately start the lessons at the very beginning of basic music theory, no matter what the student already knows or does not know. We will go through the lessons as fast as the student's previous knowledge allows or as slow as the student'™s limitations dictate. Before leaving, the student will be reminded what to practice and receive a small preview about upcoming lessons (I do this to keep them motivated and excited). Throughout every lesson, I continually remain aware of the student's facial expressions and struggles. I will stop to explain the lessons in more detail if needed and/or assure the student that we will continue to go over it again until they fully understand everything and are comfortable continuing.

What curriculum is being used?
I teach using the timeless system of music theory as applied to the guitar, piano and voice. This form of learning music, educates the student, in a way that reading music notation, tablature or memorizing a few songs can not. By learning music this way right from the beginning, a student understands what makes music sound great.

Are the lessons strict or laid back?
I show students how music is structured in an easy laid back way, which students of all ages can understand and enjoy practicing. All my students and I have lots of fun learning this way, by actually learning and not just memorizing. Nothing makes me feel better than seeing a students face light up with those many "œah ha" moments of understanding!

"Experienced piano teacher of 30 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of classical piano skills. I specialize classical, jazz and contemporary music typically use Hal Leonard books, and also have the following tools available to use during lessons: sound recording equipment, sheet music, and more.

About Kelvin

I am a highly organized, outcome-driven and motivated professional musician and educator with solid experience in the classroom. For the past 25 years, I have been employed with Amati music academy and seven years on the faculty of University of St Francis.
I am very comfortable with all aspects of the current music syllabus, including teaching musical concepts (such as duration, pitch, dynamics, tone color, texture and structure) as well as performance, composition. I am fully qualified, with a Bachelor of Education in Music, Double Masters in music performance and education from University
of Nottingham.
I am proficient in classical, jazz and Celtic fiddle violin and possess solid skills in piano (grade 8-13) Royal conservatory system.
Throughout my teaching career, I have been driven to help students achieve their very best. I strongly believe that music has the power to change lives – to enhance the social, cultural and spiritual lives of people, and serve as a profound medium of personal expression. Professional perform experience: The Chicago, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, Three tours with Moody Blues, YoYo Ma etc....
The most important thing I look for in a student is communication skills, as well as talent. I like to nurture students and help identify their individual strengths, which is a key factor in shaping a musical persona that will make its mark both on and offstage. I do not advocate a uniform technique for all students. Physical differences and learning styles are always taken into consideration. Potential is as important to me as early achievements and experience. My goal is to help students become self-sufficient, discriminating artists. I discuss practice techniques often and develop individualized scale routines. I encourage initiative and expressive musicality as well as precision. Above all, music needs to bring obvious joy to the student, regardless of the difficulties.”

Mr. Kelvin began teaching my daughter when she was 4 yrs old...a year later she is able to recite notes and integrate and apply her knowledge of music theory to her music pieces. Mr. Kelvin is very enthusiastic every practice, but most importantly he is VERY patient and adaptable to my young daughter's mood...especially for a 5yr old who has a small attention span.

Sarah P.

Bolingbrook, IL

Experienced piano teacher of 10 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of music theory, sight reading, technique, and stylistic skills. I specialize in classical and accompaniment, Faber Piano Adventures piano series and a wide array of repertoire books, and also have the following tools available to use during lessons: piano, extensive musical library, iPad with YouTube and numerous other musical apps, quarterly group lessons, bi-annual recitals.

About Sarah

Classically trained pianist and singer. When it comes to piano, I have over 20 years of training under my belt. Majority of my experience deals with classical and accompaniment but have also studied jazz and contemporary.
In the way of singing, I am a classically trained singer who majored in Opera Performance in college. I have plenty of performance experience from being on the stage in operas and musical to performing with choirs and solo recitals. In voice lessons a student can choose to specialize in opera or if they were to take standard voice lessons, they could expect a wide variety
of music focusing on multiple languages and genres including musical theater.

With every musician, Music Theory is crucial. All students will learn the basics of reading music and those who choose, can go beyond to learn the structure of music and why music is the way it is with Music Theory lessons.

I am qualified to teach all levels of piano, opera, and voice.I take a real hands on, active approach to teaching, going beyond just the lesson books.

I am also able to offer tutoring services. I have been tutoring since high school. In high school as part of the National Honors Society, we were asked to tutor once a week and it continued into college when I decided to double major in Psychology taking an interest in adolescence psychology. My strong suits and reading and math but I am more than happy to help in any subject.

*** Lesson Details ***
Our sessions will be laid back and easy going. I expect the students to do their work and practice and as long as they are showing progress, we can continue with a fun and relaxed atmosphere. I am patient with my students, and do my best to develop teaching methods unique to each student to give the best experience and set them up for the highest level of success. I don't push students to perfection but rather assist them in reaching their personal best. As long as they are having fun and learning, I know I am doing my job. Music is to be enjoyed and that is my goal with each student.

For voice and piano, students will learn a wide variety of music. I also believe strongly in the power of sight reading. Students will also learn music theory in their lessons. Piano students will follow a lesson book curriculum along with learning scales and sight reading. Voice students will sing from all major languages (English, French, Italian, and German) and practice sight reading skills.

Students should bring a notebook to lessons where notes will be taken on what we accomplished in our lessons and what needs to be worked on for the next lesson. This will usually include a theory sheet, technique work, and songs.

Twice a year I hold a recital where students get to show off to other students and family what they have accomplished in their lessons. With piano students, you will prepare and memorize usually one song. For voice students, you will prepare and memorize two songs, at least one will be in a foreign language.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lower level for studio, piano, seating for parents, on site computer for easy reference and music samples, no pets, no kids

*** Specialties ***
I have an Opera performance degree. I am a classically trained singer and pianist.

Kellyann W.

Bolingbrook, IL

This is traditional piano lessons, covering a wide variety of repertoire, technique, theory, and performance practices.

About Kellyann

From a young age, I was enamored with music and blessed to have parents who encouraged this passion by providing me with a variety of lessons. It is a privilege to pass on this love of music through lessons to a new generation of learners!

I have a Bachelor's of Science in Music Education and Sacred Music with emphases in piano and voice from Faith Baptist Bible College in Ankeny, IA, and have taken several graduate level professional development courses that have enhanced my abilities as a musician and teacher.

Throughout my high school and college careers, I was involved in many mus
ical groups, so I know the challenges that accompany the pursuit of excellence and a full schedule. This has given me an understanding of students' needs while maintaining high expectations.

I am a substitute teacher as well, currently working for Plainfield 202 and Valley View 365U, and I have connections with Indian Prairie 204. Because of this, I have completed background checks with the Will County and DuPage County Regional Offices of Education.

Along with teaching, I love using music at church and for fun at home with my husband, Tim. We also enjoy many other activities together like bike-riding, cooking, hiking, camping, and playing with our loveable goldendoodle Max (who stays outside or in a closed bedroom during lessons).

I moved to Bolingbrook in mid-2013 and thoroughly enjoy our friendly neighborhood just north of Independence Elementary School. I look forward to welcoming you to my in-home studio!
