I would like to take this opportunity to thank you Maureen for the piano lessons you have been giving to my mom.. It was so wonderful yesterday my brother and his family came to the house and mom played "Love Me Tender", of course by Elvis Presley.
It was a tear jerking moment.
Mom has had issues with her brain from a car accident, and her piano lessons with you have been the best, best thing for her....from our entire family,
Thank you

Family Music Teacher

We have enjoyed having Maureen as our family’s music teacher. My son started taking flute lessons with Maureen in 2009 and advanced through the levels very quickly. He plays flute in YOSAC (Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County). He also plays saxophone and tried out and was selected for the Alameda County Honor Band. Maureen worked with him on jazz theory and improvisation and he plays in the jazz band at school. With Maureen, he worked through all six levels of Master Theory and is ready for the college level AP Music Theory at 14 years old. He also completed the MTAC (Music Teachers’ Association of California) Composer’s Today workbooks and used http://www.noteflight.com to write his own music and participate in composition contests. My daughter has been taking piano and violin lessons with Maureen and has been doing a great job. She is playing classical music on violin in school and in YOSAC (Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County). On piano she is learning to play the blues and jazz, as well as learning theory and composition. Both of my children have been able to successfully participate in the LaHonda Summer Music Camp. We have had a great experience with Maureen throughout the past 5 years and have enjoyed seeing her each week.

Piano Player

Last October my daugther received piano lessons as a gift for her birthday. We started taking lessons with Maureen in November, my daugther, who had just turned 6 was very excited to start classes. Maureen had been very patient with her and caters to her ability and age. Sometimes my daugther gets discouraged, because she feels like she isn't progresing as fast as she would like, but after class she is always excited and ready to come home and continue practicing. Overall, I am pleased with our experience thus far. Maureen is very accommodating and is equipping my daugther with the skills she needs to be a successful piano player.

A Great Violin Teacher

My daughter has been taking lessons with Larisa for three years and has made incredible progress. She began as a viola player and Larisa gave her lessons on that instrument as well. She was very helpful in making the transition to violin. Larisa works on technique as well as musicality so that the student develops into a well rounded musician. Larisa is the type of teacher who communicates clearly so that the student is able to immediately grasp the new concepts. She is a wonderful violinist and is able to demonstrate by playing beautifully as well as explaining. Larisa is extremely knowledgeable about the different periods of music and composers and shares this in her teaching. She has an easygoing personality and my daughter immediately connected with her. I would highly recommend Larisa for your student.

Perfect balance of professionalism and passion

Larisa was not our first teacher but she is no doubt the best one. She is highly professional, she accentuates the right positioning of the hands, but the music and emotional expression is on the first place. She combines the best of the Russian music teaching tradition with very attentive and fun environment for kids. She is very sensitive to child's needs and structure her lesson very individually . Not to mention her excellent communication and reliability. She also has a very positive attitude and my daughter is always looking forward to her violin lessons. Thank you, Larisa!

If I could write anything to hope that you choose Kristen to teach you, imagine it here: _______. That said. She is Amazing, Fantastic, Patient, Fun, Understand, did I say Patient!? I am a 28 year old man that is learning Viola as his "2nd" real instrument. I play piano well, and "campfire" guitar. Kristen is teaching me to read Alto clef and play the Viola. She is teaching at MY pace and not complaining when I come in without having the most practice time accomplished throughout the prior week. She has a flexible schedule and is available for communication (email and phone) between lessons (I've rescheduled many times because my work hours are not constant). She's Great! I hope you let her teach you! Thank you for reading.

Matthew Fisher-Keller has been teaching my 5 & 6 year old to play piano since August.
He is amazing with my children who have completely different temperaments. He is able to keep them focused, motivated, and interested which is no simple task. He approaches each lesson with passion and excitement which is infectious. He is loving and kind but never a push-over or disciplinarian. He is able to communicate with them on their level and still keep them progressing in their lesson plans. My kids actually get on the piano at random times and crank out tunes even when they don't have to practice. I am so thrilled with their growth. He is ALWAYS on time and an excellent communicator. He keeps his schedule and gives ample notification should there be any conflicts so that you can reschedule lessons. This has been an added bonus for a Mom that is juggling so many extracurricular and school activities. I am thankful for Matthew and would recommend him to ANY parent or person seeking a piano teacher.

Honor L.

Oakland, CA

I have been playing classical violin since I was three years old. After high school I switched to fiddling, and now my main interested is improvisation. I can teach you technique, musicality, and freedom, and open you up to a beautiful and diverse world of music!
My first goal is to create and environment in which you can have fun, feel free to express yourself and to experiment. You will not love playing music if you constantly feel frustrated and limited! After that, we create the goals!

About Honor

I am a recent graduate of Mills College in Oakland with a BA in Anthropology and a minor in Religious Studies. I am currently applying to Mills College for the Music MFA in Performance and Literature with a specialization in Improvisation. I have taught beginner violin and Hebrew lessons to students of all ages, including preschoolers! I like to make learning fun and rewarding for kids and adults alike. I do my best to bring my passion for the subject into the lesson in order to pass it on! I am a 21 year old woman and have experience teaching (on and off) since 2006. I am currently an employee of an after school program working with kids in preschool and elementary school. I look forward to learning with you!

Honor is really great to work with and challenges me yet makes the classes fun! She is patient but continues to give me work that is rewarding and I feel like I'm slowly starting to get it...hebrew is hard but if it weren't for her great attitude and patient demeanor I would be lost. I'm going to get more classes!
