John C.

Santa Clarita, CA

About John

With a pedigree going back to Beethoven, a bachelor's in music and a certificate in theory, harmony, and ear training from Berklee College of Music online, I have a broad and versatile musical background. My training began when I was in 6th grade and started taking piano lessons. By 9th grade I began competing in national private school fine arts competitions, and aside from my solo performance background I have had extensive experience accompanying, writing, and arranging music.
I also come from a family of school teachers (both my parents, two aunts, and one uncle), and have extensive exper
ience dealing with and teaching children (like tutoring, substitute teaching, coaching, and teaching in a church setting).
Because of all this background, I feel well-prepared to not only bring a strong knowledge-base and skill-set to the lessons I provide, but also to helpfully convey that knowledge-base and skill-set to my students.
My lessons are catered to the student and aim to develop the whole musician, technically and artistically, incorporating a broad musical understanding with the goals of the parent and/or student in mind. Let's make some true musicians!

*** Travel Equipment ***
I do not provide any travel equipment. The student should provide a piano/keyboard for lessons.

*** Specialties ***
Along with teaching traditional piano technique, I specialize in improvisation, arranging, songwriting, and composition.

Gary G.

Simi Valley, CA

About Gary

I was an instructor at Musician’s Institute in Hollywood for 25 years and am now accepting private students at my home studio in Simi Valley. All experience levels are welcome. I will construct a lesson plan according to your wants and needs. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced student or just someone who always wanted to rock out to your favorite song.
I will get you there quickly and effectively

Beginning lessons might include:
hand technique,
reading,
coordination
getting comfortable behind a drum set etc.
learning to play your favorite songs

Intermediate to advanced
lessons can include:
different styles,
odd groupings,
phrasing,
how to solo etc.
It all depends on your goals and desires.

Biography:
Born and raised in New Haven Connecticut Gary developed a passion for music and particularly drums at an early age. He studied with many different teachers in the New England area most notably Ed Soph.

In 1986 he packed his bags and moved to Los Angeles to attend the Percussion Institute of Technology at Musician’s Institute. While studying at PIT he also started working as the drum tech for the school.
During that time he was mentored by Casy Scheurell, Taka Numazawa Rob Carson and Vinnie Colaiuta.

Very quickly he became an accomplished drummer and upon completion of the one year program he was asked by Casy Scheurell to sub in his Rock Drum class.
And it didn’t take long before Gary joined the drum staff at PIT under Ralph Humphrey and Joe Pocaro.

During that time he played with numerous bands throughout LA including trip to Korea with famed bass player Abe Laboriel Sr.

Throughout his 25 years at MI he taught just about every class and every student level, from beginner to advanced. As an instructor he was best known for hand technique, sight reading and odd groupings.

Aside from MI Gary has taught students privately at his studio in Simi Valley.

Gary Garbatini has had an impactful affect on my outlook towards my instrument. I continue to study under his mentorship of 8 years and since then have begun teaching various drum concepts to my own students today. Gary will engage you both musically and intellectually with quality education and wisdom. 10/10

Today was my first day with Gary. He was awesome! I discussed with him my goals. He had me play a few beats off the bat to quickly assess my techniques. From there, he immediately focussed on what he felt I should be working on to get me to the next level of drumming. He was kind, encouraging, and very patient with me. I felt 100% comfortable and I had FUN! I am looking forward to my next lesson with Gary!!

Thanks you TL! You have an AWESOME instructor on board!!

Had the honor of studying with Gary at Musicians Institute in Hollywood in the mid 2000's. Besides being one of the nicest guys to be around he also has the largest vocabulary to draw from when it comes to Drumming. From teaching the fundamentals of hand and feet technique/coordination to taking that technique/coordination to the next level by grooving in odd-times or mastering polyrhythmic material Gary can help anyone attain the facilities to express themselves anytime, anywhere with anyone! A true diamond in the ruff as far as knowledge is concerned!
