Danny has helped me with a project I had for my church. It was my first time singing in front of my congregation or more than a few people and my dogs. So I set up classes and could only find good acoustics in my walk in closet. So with my laptop I did classes and right away Danny was able to point out my problem areas. Long story short Danny's advise is to always "work with what you have". So the day of the performance we had some tech issues and one of two monitors went out. I learned and was reminded to why I was singing and kept smiling. It was a success. Even though was nervous and shaking a bit. They loved me. Now I perform every chance I get.

First time taking Skype lessons. Danny is very diverse in explanation and in music terms since, I have only sung karaoke and in my shower. Despite my low end camera and microphone and also limited space...The advice and coaching were top notch. My friends and family are already giving me props. What a great feeling! Thanks I recommend.

Rick is a wonderful teacher. I already have some previous music experience, so he is working with me at my level instead of starting me from the beginning. I would definitely recommend him as a teacher.

I'm a mid 40's guy who's wanted to play guitar since I was a kid. After a failed attempt in my teens, I hadn't revisited it (unless air-guitar counts) until this year. Fortunately for me, through Take Lessons, I found Rick. He is so very patient, friendly and flexible. The one thing I most enjoy about our lessons is that it's like visiting with a friend for an hour each week - whether we talk about music theory, new guitars or just about our lives, he always is engaged and accessible.

I can't say enough about Rick, he is a very knowledgeable musician, he genuinely cares that you reach your goal and is a really, really pleasant person. If your dream is just to play some of your favorite songs, or to go on to be a professional musician - Rick is definitely who I would recommend.

The truth is you can utilize the classical technique in any genre of music. Trust me it will make a difference in your singing. I would be happy to discuss my methods in more detail. Thank you.

Neil D.

Boerne, TX

About Neil

I am a music educator of 11 years: I have taught both middle school band and choir to at-risk youth, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy. My principal instrument is the saxophone (which I began playing in 1990), and I play many other instruments. As for my formal education: I received the Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2005 from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey; and the Master of Music Education degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA, 2010).

*** Lesson Details ***
My goal is to create life-long musicians...
I focus on the needs an
d interests of my students, thereby representing all musical genres and including all cultures.
My lessons are structured into activities that incorporate various aspects of music appreciation:
Music theory, music history, music technology, performance practice, etc. (making such lessons comprehensive)

*** Studio Equipment ***
As a musician of 25 years, I believe it is the "musician that makes the instrument", and not the other way around. That is, I do not believe it is necessary to purchase the 'top' brand for your instrument in order to achieve the desired sound. Frequent practice builds skills and results in the desired tones people wish to hear.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I always bring my instrument, metronome, tuner, music stand and stand for my instrument, including lesson materials and supplies.
I expect students to obtain a metronome and to always have their music folder (with ALL music etc.) available for lessons.

*** Specialties ***
All genres, all styles & all cultures! I teach students of all ages--mostly at my home studio, but I also travel to students' homes, churches, and, as an alternative during the Summer only, I am willing to meet with students in the Practice Rooms in the Fine Arts Building at UTSA.

I can highly recommend Hayes as an instructor for beginning students. He has a great personality, really connects with kids, and is very enthusiastic about music and teaching. He is very patient, explains things clearly to my son, and always teaches in a professional manner. My son has taken lessons for 6 months and we are really happy with Hayes' lessons.

Mastering Lead Guitar: Arpeggios for Beginners
When you're learning guitar, you will come across different tricks you can add to your playing to add some flavor to your music. Here, Philadelphia, PA guitar instructor Bernard M. teaches you how to spice up your songs with guitar arpeggios... For many guitar players, learning how to play a memorable solo is a constant journey. A big part of this is knowing what notes to play and when to play them. The first step is to learn how to play a scale over the key of the song (if you're not fam
The Road to Becoming a Better Singer
Learning how to sing well takes time, practice, and patience. While it may come naturally to some singers, most will need to put in some solid work to improve their skills. Read on as Saint Paul, MN teacher Justin S. offers his advice...   "How long does it take to become a better singer?" she asks, desperation grasping at her already fatigued vocal cords. I know that this is my chance to be a beacon of hope, a voice savior, if only I can find the right words to inspire her... "As
How to Strum a Guitar: A Beginner's First Lesson
Yearning to learn to strum a tune? Guitar teacher Kirk R. shares a perfect first lesson in strumming a guitar... Most of the songs that my guitar students want to learn consist largely, if not completely, of strummed chords. While most students are able to pick up both simple and more complicated rhythms, or strumming patterns, often I notice that beginners have a hard time keeping track of where the beat is and really getting into the groove of the song. It’s also common that I se
Guitar Theory Basics: Understanding Keys
Curious about keys? Guitar teacher Alexander A. breaks down the guitar theory behind understanding keys... What key am I in? For most of the music we play this simple question yields a simple answer. I think the REAL question here is “why.” Why is a piece of music considered to be in the key of G major, or A minor, or any other key? I was in my 3rd semester of Jazz Harmony at Berklee when the instructor stumped the entire class with this question. I think the answer will surprise you. The
