Robert H.

Pikesville, MD

About Robert

Creativity, skill and love of music are the key elements that I work to encourage in every student. Over the years my teaching has evolved and I find it gratifying to take people far beyond their own expectations while helping them achieve their goals. I believe everyone is musical and just needs the right key to tap into their own creativity.

For beginners it's important to study with an excellent teacher. Setting a solid and creative foundation makes all the difference!
For advanced players studying with a great artist takes you greater artistry.

Weekly private lessons focus on te
chnical skills in either piano, voice (or a combination of both) and a strong musical foundation. Theory and Ear Training are fundamentals that are embedded in this approach to developing a complete musician and artist.

I have over 20 years experience working with students as young as 3 and old as 85! Often multiple generations in a family study together making for a rich family experience.

Performance opportunities: Recitals, Concerts Cabarets and Musicals are a part of developing into a musician and singer and enhancing a love of music that will last a lifetime!

*** Lesson Details ***
Piano - Classical, Jazz, Blues and Improvisation. Current students are beginners to professional musicians and music teachers.

Voice – I am an accomplished vocal coach and songwriter and currently work with a wide variety of singers from young beginners to professionals who look to develop through ear training, singing and songwriting. In a unique way I guide people to become better performers and musicians through the combination of voice, piano and composition.

I work with students as young as 3 or 4 and into their 80’s. It’s important to begin with an excellent teacher from the start to set a good foundation and to have the ability to develop as quickly and thoroughly as possible. I enjoy working with beginners as well as accomplished musicians. I also believe that music is one of the great joys of life and that lessons should be FUN!

Besides a wide variety of performance opportunities through my Family to Family Concerts, I also offer my students the curriculum and exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, a gold standard music curriculum.. The ABRSM is accredited in over 100 countries worldwide and exams are offered twice per year in all instruments and voice.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lesson room with grand piano, vocal mics, recording equipment. Parents can sit in on lessons and waiting area available, parking on street. No pets.

*** Travel Equipment ***
They will need a piano or keyboard

A message from Robert: Hello, I am a master teacher focusing on the classical repertoire along with a very creative approach to improvisation and composition. I help students to achieve their interests of music rather than focusing on teaching one particular method. Classes are tailored to the student and constantly evolving. This has led me to work in a variety of mediums and styles including Jazz, improvisation, rock and blues. This approach also enhances an understanding and love of classical music.
I also guide my students in the curriculum and exams of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. (ABRSM) Exams are offered twice per year.
I have also found it inspiring to work with people with disabilities and help them find a way to express themselves musically. I give lectures and workshops in the area and around the country on improvisation and creativity along with concerts of my own music.
I also work with a number of students in vocal coaching and accompanying.
New this year are seminars in songwriting for adults and children. Groups of 4-5 collaborate on new songs. Film and video composition coming soon!

Nathan R.

Windsor Mill, MD

About Nathan

I have been teaching private lessons for close to 10 years and have been an active performer for even longer, playing in all different types of groups, from rock bands and jazz groups to orchestras and brass bands. I studied music at Frostburg State University (Bachelors) and the Peabody Conservatory (Masters). I can teach just about any age and skill level and cover anything you are interested in learning; whether its a certain style, genre, technique or song.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are laid back, with a focus on perfecting the basics. Most students work out of a method book a
ppropriate to their skill level. Aside from that we'll also spend time learning songs and pieces of the students choice. With the right amount of effort, you'll know your way around your instrument in no time at all

*** Travel Equipment ***
Will provide sheet music and exercises. My students should have a working instrument as well as any method book or sheet music we are working on.

*** Specialties ***
I teach all styles and genres

Susan S.

Owings Mills, MD

About Susan

Acting – I have taught all kinds of acting, including Audition Skills, Shakespeare, Stage, Film & TV, Dramatic, Comedic, whatever. I also have quite a bit of experience performing in all those arenas.

Voice – Anyone can sing. I you want to and have always thought you couldn't, you will be delighted when I prove you wrong. If you're a serious singer, no matter what kind of singing you want to do, you should train classically. It's just the best way to train those delicate muscles.
I am an excellent coach, at any level. I will teach you how to OWN the song. That's what keeps people coming b
ack. However, as an instructor, I am better with beginners.

Speaking – Ever lost your voice because you were talking too much? Every professional speaker I know of has. YOU DON'T HAVE TO. It's simply a matter of knowing the correct way to produce the sound. That's easy for me to teach.

Writing – I have been a professional writer and editor for over eight years; I have books, articles, posts, newsletters, etc. published. The point of grammar is to facilitate communication, NOT to be right. I can teach you practical grammar, not just correct grammar. I can show you how to make your words flow and be easily read. If there are typos in here, please understand you should never proofread your own work.

Nutrition/Alternative Medicine – I have been in this field for over 25 years. I am certified as a Sports Massage Therapist and most of my experience is in that area, but over the years, I have garnered quite a bit of usable knowledge.

Meditation – There is no one right way to meditate. You don't even have to be still to meditate, although it's a good place to start. We'll find a way(s) that's right for you.

James Y.

Baltimore, MD

About James

My name is James. I am a composer of music and a teacher of people. I grew up in Texas but traveled northward while acquiring progressively advanced degrees, ending with a doctorate in music composition from the Peabody conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland.

As a composer, I have written for numerous acoustic and electronic media, performed and read by ensembles such as the Baltimore and Waco Symphonies, the University of Louisville Symphony Orchestra, the Talujon Percussion Ensemble, and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group. Beyond more traditional fare, I have written multiple film score
s for the Occasional Symphony, video game music for students of the Maryland Institute College of Art, and I have constructed an art and sound installation at the University of Louisville.

As an educator, I have enjoyed teaching a wide range of rising musicians, from young to old, beginners and advanced. I have taught courses ranging from music theory fundamentals to more advanced concepts of form and structure at venues such as the Brevard Music Center and the Peabody Conservatory. I have also hosted multiple seminars on music composition and philosophy, ranging from topics such as "Composition vs. Improvisation" and exploring the question "Why do you compose?" Further, as part of the Peabody Preparatory's Junior Bach program, I taught middle school students the art of music composition.

In working with students of all levels, I like to strike a balance between leading and allowing them to follow their intuition. After all, music creation is an organic process fueled by equal parts technique and creativity.

David G.

Baltimore, MD

About David

Hello, my name is David G. I have been playing music for 20yrs. I currently play at a church, and have been the lead musician for the past 8yrs. I am the son of a preacher, so that is the reason for the help in Bible Studies. I was interested in becoming an architect/engineer, that is the reason for the math skills. Above all, I enjoy seeing people learn and grow and I want to help people accomplish their goals. I look forward to learning from the students, just because I am a tutor does not mean that I know everything. I welcome the students questions. If I know the answer I will try
to thoroughly explain the answer so the student understands. If I do not know the answer I will research and find the answer to help all of us learn. Thank you for the opportunity.
