Troy S.

Fullerton, CA

Improve your technique, musicality, or prepare for an audition. Whatever you need!

About Troy

Music began for me extremely young ( age 4 ) first with piano, then with trumpet and saxophone. During High School my specialty changed to Trumpet and focused on that instrument.

During my time playing I have enjoyed being a section leader and playing for many great ensembles that bridged many genres including Classical, Jazz, Rock, Funk, Blues, Pop, as well as Orchestral.

My teachers have included many trumpet professionals including Malcolm Mcnab, Barry Perkins, Rudy Arevalos and Dave Evans.

I have made the focus of my life music and I love playing and teaching music and I love meet
ing new people.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am a current enrolled Trumpet Performance student at CSUF and I perform with some of the top ensembles in the school. I have taught lessons with all ages ranging from age 5 to age 62. My experience with trumpet is extensive and I am ready to help you with any aspect of your playing no matter if it's range, endurance, flexibility, literature, or anything else! I have also taught instruments other than trumpet including French Horn, Baritone, Euphonium, and Tuba.

All of my lessons are individually tailored to fit the student that I work with so it is hard to let you know exactly what to expect. My teaching style also may slightly change depending on my students age, activity, and attention level. Expect to learn the fundamentals first (but in an interesting way like playing duets or tunes instead of just exercises), then moving on to more advanced techniques.

I can help with school based literature and assignments for your music classes to help you be the first chair in your band!

Some methods you may expect to see me use are: Arban, Stamp (done correctly), Schlossberg, Clark, and many etude books just to name a few.

All in all I am a fun teacher who loves working with anyone to help them improve on whatever they need and want to improve on!

*** Specialties ***
I can play any style and teach any including Broadway musical book type performance. I do specialize some in classical performance.

Brian W.

Los Angeles, CA

About Brian

Hello!

I moved to Los Angeles in 2009 to pursue a Master's degree in Classical Guitar Performance at the University of Southern California under the tutelage of world famous guitarist, Scott Tennant. In addition to Tennant, I've with several of today's leading classical guitarists including William Kanengiser, Brian Head, James Smith, Pepe Romero, Jorge Caballero, Sergio and Odair Assad, Pablo Cohen, and Timothy Walker (during a stint at the Royal Acadamy of Music in London).

As an undergraduate music student at Ithaca College, I honed my chops as a performer in both ensemble and solo s
ettings, giving frequent recitals throughout upstate New York.

Of my musical abilities, my college guitar professor once wrote, "Brian is one of the most virtuosic guitarists I have ever come across in more than fifteen years of teaching at Ithaca College. His technical ability, sound quality and very passionate interpretations are comparable to the skills and artistry only found in a handful of today’s young professional guitarists"

Though the bulk of my training has been in classical guitar, I'm a lover of all styles of music, and would never to think to push a formal classical guitar education on someone who isn't interested. But no matter what style of guitar you'd like to pursue, I will certainly pepper in some classical techniques and exercises to make sure your fingers are moving as effortlessly and efficiently as possible. I also place a strong emphasis on music theory, and learning to read music.

*** Lesson Details ***
As a teacher, I am personable and laid back. I will go to every length possible to accommodate your individual needs and make you feel at ease. When it comes to musical interpretation, I am a firm believer that each individual should find his or her own voice. I am never one to tell you that you must play as I play.

That said, I am a stickler for proper technique. It is the most important tool you can have when you want to express yourself musically.

Student-wise, I am comfortable teaching ages 8 and up. Complete beginner, or seasoned professional I can help take you where you want to go!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Living room: large space, good acoustics, chairs, music stands

*** Travel Equipment ***
they should provide a guitar, and two chairs. I can bring my own music stand.

*** Specialties ***
guitar: beginner - advanced

trumpet: beginner - intermediate

bass guitar: beginner - intermediate

Brian is an extremely effective teacher. After having before received guitar lessons years ago, I am learning that some things on the guitar are counter-intuitive, such as training to press on the frets very lightly. My technique is progressing rapidly under Brian's mentorship. His approach to the guitar is very systematic and sensible, and the quality of his instruction is very high.

James H.

West Covina, CA

My services provide you with an opportunity to learn from a balance state of thinking to achieve success in your goals for the chosen instrument. Whether its technique, learning how to read both musically and literally, my teaching methods are very self reflective and introspective to provide the understanding you're looking for. All in all my sessions are very people friendly and driven to meet your needs. This helps to learn on a deeper level so that you may appreciate, learn faster and enjoy a greater sense of awareness for the fun of the music making process. I have a very warm and easy going approach with an emphasis on FUN so that we can connect to what we love to do which is make music.

About James

My name is James and I have earned a Master’s degree in Music Performance and graduated from Cal State Fullerton. I also have a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education received from the University of Redlands. I have performed with a variety of musical ensembles (college, orchestra, band, chamber groups) and have experience in all musical genres. Currently I am Co-principal of the Corona Symphony Orchestra and play in other groups throughout Southern California as well as the Elementary level band instructor in the Monrovia Unified School district. I have also taught and coached at several middle
and high schools for the past few years, and I teach privately throughout the San Gabriel Valley and the Inland Empire. My passion is educating the musicians of tomorrow and helping them discover their innate musical abilities and desires.

*** Lesson Details ***
My lessons are very student driven and revolve around developing students innate music abilities to help them connect and experience success as well as enriching their lives with music. In my lessons students will develop music appreciation skills by listening to music, understanding basic music theory concepts, growing a knowledge of historical awareness in music all alongside learning the instrument of their chosen preference. The pace set for the sessions is rather relaxed and is highly dependent on the student but, students are guided throughout the sessions to eventually achieve their goals. My main teaching approach is: Let me use my skills and knowledge to help figure out what works best for you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
The home studio lessons take place in the living room or a finished garage with tile floor. Seating is available in both areas. Parking is on the street. He has an upright piano.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I can provide music as well as they can provide music as well. I can provide a music stand. They need to provide the necessary equipment that allows their instrument to function

*** Specialties ***
Primarily classical style and some jazz.

Thomas K.

Glendale, CA

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

An instrumentalist since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach beginning trumpet lessons.

About Thomas

No one ever regrets learning an instrument… yet many grow old wishing they had taken music lessons! A talent they’ll be able to develop their entire life, your children will thank you for giving them the chance to learn music. And bonus points for you: after just a couple years, you’ll have free entertainment every Christmas!

Or maybe YOU’RE the one that wishes to learn! It is never too late to begin learning an instrument. Yes, I'm trying to get you to sign up for lessons, and yes I sincerely mean that. Everybody has the ability, and if you’re determined and interested, there’s nothing st
opping us from achieving this very special goal. (Interested in learning to compose? Scroll to the bottom to learn more.)

Everybody learns differently, and everybody likes different things. Whether it’s improvising or singing alongside a song you love or reading through a classical concerto, I’ll help prepare you or your child to tackle a wide variety of styles, without missing out on any of the basics that turn good players into phenomenal musicians. We all know it’s not about being the best. It’s about having fun, and playing music well is definitely fun.

Practice makes perfect! Learning an instrument helps build self-confidence and discipline. If your child’s bored, distracted, or just needs a constructive hobby, music is a great place to get them interested in something that will help them feel better about themselves, and the effects will be felt across everything else they do, through better studying habits to a more patient, diligent work ethic.

It’s also relaxing! Stressed about work? Need an escape? Maybe you want to sound like [insert piano player here]. Everybody has the power to learn an instrument. Seriously, there’s no such thing as “talent.” Just start lessons and get practicing! It really is that simple, and I’ll guide you through every step of the way.

I have a diverse background teaching students of all ages, from 3-year-olds to retirees alike, customizing what we learn to the individual student. We’ll learn how to read music just as easily as you read words; improvise and compose music of our own; and feel good playing any style: classical, jazz, rock, and all. My experience as a working musician in films, musical theater, and pop music, as well as classical concert music, allows me to appreciate and teach styles that many other instructors overlook, and I know full well that learning an instrument is not about becoming a professional; it’s about being able to connect to others or oneself through music… and also to just have fun! There’s no need to learn music we don’t like! It’s not about stuffing Beethoven into your kids’ ears… we just want to make music, be that Beethoven or Billy Joel.

Music lasts a lifetime. I know that’s a terrible cliché, but it’s true, and few other skills can claim that. I don’t want to sugarcoat it: it takes time to learn an instrument. It takes practice, and sometimes it’s frustrating. But the results are well worth it, and like a snowball rolling down a hill, the longer you do it, the faster you get… or something like that. There’s a legitimate analogy in there somewhere.

Now get out there and make some music! But start by signing up for lessons. I can’t wait to get started!

---

“What’s that chord?” “Why does all my music sound the same?” “How do I fix this voicing?” “I just can’t get it out of my head!” …sound familiar? You’ve probably hit a rut. Or maybe you’re just starting out. Either way, you want your music to sound new, exciting, and to come out exactly how you hear it in your head. Yes… you CAN learn to compose music, you CAN learn to be more creative, and you CAN learn to share your sound with the world.

Film music, classical, jazz… whatever your interest, all music comes from the same place, and by learning a handful of basic concepts, you can apply these to whatever style you’re trying to write. Learning to emulate another musician involves knowing what they’re doing. Learning to create a groundbreaking sound requires that you know what’s already been done, and how to achieve it. Step by step, we’ll work our way there.

We’ll learn how to write cool, interesting chord progressions, how to write beautiful melodies, and how to voice chords. We’ll learn how to control the mood of our music, from making it sound relaxed to adding tension wherever we want. Maybe you’re trying to write for an orchestra, or just a small band. By learning the basics, you can then easily break away from what’s been done and come up with something truly new… the goal of any aspiring composer!
