About Thomas

From a young age, I have been deeply involved in the musical community. I began studying piano when I was three, and throughout my education, I’ve learned from such accomplished instructors as Belle Mehus and Christopher Taylor. After receiving a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance from The University of Mary in North Dakota, I continue to study, teach, perform, and compose. I’ve also studied guitar and bass for nearly twenty years.  I love playing and teaching these instruments because of the strong correlations between the way they are tuned and played and the way western music theory wor
ks—as well as the pure enjoyment that comes from them!  Additionally, I have twenty years of education in oboe and other woodwind instruments. I was principle oboist for two orchestras and reached the third round of auditions for 3rd oboe in The Minnesota Orchestra in 2006. Lastly, I have been an active vocalist since being a boy soprano in Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors and Andrew Lloyd Weber's Requiem.

I genuinely enjoy all aspects and styles of music—whether I’m studying a Chopin Etude, playing Charles Mingus at a jazz gig, writing and performing with my rock band, or composing hip hop tracks for a short film. I am an easygoing teacher who gets results, and I would love to welcome more people to my diverse group of students.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am very pleased with my teaching method because I help my students achieve great progress, as well as immense enjoyment. I have a fairly standard routine of teaching technique, theory, and musicality, but I keep a comfortable, laid-back environment. The result is solid, consistent advancement that might come from a stricter method of teaching, with a lesson experience that is more fun and loose.

I am also a highly versatile instructor. While there are certain things that I believe are always necessary when learning a musical instrument, I incorporate them into each student's distinct capabilities and preferences. In short, I can instill the same musical values in every student, whether they’re studying J.S. Bach, The Rolling Stones, or Rihanna.

I take my students' goals and musical preferences very seriously and strive to make every student happy. I am always open to any ideas a student might have, and I am available to answer questions at all times.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide literature and some accessories. Student needs to have instrument, other accessories, and a music stand.

Donna S.

San Gabriel, CA

Experienced sax and brass teacher of 27 years available for eager students of all experience levels and ages! I structure my lessons so students learn what they want to learn, while also building a strong foundation of technical skills. I specialize in Classical, rock, blues, and jazz. I can work with any method book that is used in schools, but I also like to supplement with the Jamey Aebersold books for improvisation and the Rubank and DeVille Universal Method for Saxophone.

About Donna

Hey, I'm Donna and I've been teaching trumpet, Brass instruments and saxophones since 1987. I am a certified teacher in NY, and have recently moved to Los Angeles to enjoy the weather and perform Rock, Jazz, Blues with many different bands.

I love starting students out on their instruments, and have had great success helping beginners and intermediate players do really well in school and at Solo festivals, All County and All State.

I have judged NYSSMA Festivals for over 15 years (and still fly back to do it!), and know how to help students play well under the pressure of an audition.

I have had students get accepted into Juilliard and Manhattan Pre-Colleges (Jazz), USDAN, many other music camps and colleges across the country.

I have performed at the Orpheum Theatre (LA), City National Grove (Anaheim), Wolf Den (Mohegan Sun, CT), World Cafe (Philadelphia), Paramount NY, Landmark Theatre, Dix Hills Performing Arts Centre, NYCB Theatre, Riverhead Blues Festival, Patchogue Theatre, Theatre Three and numerous restaurants and clubs in NY and Los Angeles metro areas.

From performing with many bands, I know how exciting it is to play songs. I want all my Beginner and Intermediate students to enjoy making music by ear and by reading. In addition to classical music, I also love teaching Jazz and improvisation to all my students, which makes them more independent and creative. I have also used many method books like Breeze Easy, Essential Elements 2000, Rubank, Jump Right In, Clarke, Arban and Universal Method for Saxophone.

I love helping students reach their potential!

I have many videos on YouTube to help young players, trumpet and saxes.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I predominantly use Selmer Mark VI saxophones (alto and tenor)

Bach Stradivarius Model 37 Trumpet
Cannonball Trumpet

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in helping students overcome embouchure problems.
I also have vast experience teaching students with braces. I have written articles on this topic on my site and others over the years.

Donna is a very enthusiastic teacher. Even before she scheduled the 1st lesson, she asked about my background in playing sax and what my goals are (which is sight reading and improvisation). She immediately recommended a couple of books. The next day she came for the 1st lesson, I was prepared and she came prepared. I am self-taught in playing sax. She is my first private tutor. She gave me tips on warming up, improving my tone, pitch exercises and getting the right rhythm on a jazz song. She brought her sax also and played side by side as she tutored me. She gave me homework for my next weeks lesson. She knows exactly what I need. I am so motivated to play more. She even stayed longer than one hour just to make sure I get my questions answered. I'm telling you she's the best. School starts next week, I can't wait to tell my classmates about her. I'll be in 10th grade. You have nothing to lose. In fact, I've already learned more in 1 hour than what I learned in 1 month at school.

Joseph S.

Corona, CA

I'm getting my degree in Saxophone Performance, and specialize in classical saxophone.

About Joseph

I grew up in music, and started playing the piano when I was 6 years old, and began composing and using Logic Pro two years after that. I have been playing saxophone for 8 years, and am currently working to gain my bachelors degree in music performance from California State University, Fullerton. During my saxophone instruction I also began learning clarinet as a supplementary instrument, and have been playing it for 3 years. What I love about music the most, is how deep it resonates with the human soul and how the music stems from the passion of the composer and the performer.

I feel that
my job as a teacher is to instill a sense of passion and love for music in my students, in addition to teaching them the instrument and the rudiments of music. I also am a strong believer that the best way to grow as a musician is to perform, to play with other musicians, and to listen to as much music as one can get their hands on. My teaching style emphasizes deliberate and consistent practice schedules and a very broad and visceral understanding of music as a whole.

Thomas K.

Glendale, CA

Strong instrumental playing begins with a solid understanding of the fundamentals of music and the simple act of making a sound from the instrument. Students learn to play music by ear first, and are later introduced to music notation. More advanced lessons emphasize sight-reading, expression, and improvisation.

A woodwind player since age 10, Thomas has experience as a performer and teacher. His previous education has included methodology classes on teaching specific instruments, and he is available to teach intermediate and beginning saxophone lessons.

About Thomas

A Los Angeles-based composer, orchestrator, conductor, and educator, Thomas has earned a reputation as a reliable and effective music instructor. Thomas instructs students in piano, woodwinds, trumpet, music theory, and composition. He has led multiple after-school classes and private lessons (both online and in-person) for instrumentalists as an official teacher for Piano Keys 4 Kids, MusIQ Club, Music Teachers Network, and Music Lessons on Wheels. He has received praise over his varied and individual approaches to teaching that focus on realizing the full potential of his students, whom rang
e from kindergarteners to adults.

Thomas served as the arranger and orchestrator for the full-length stage musical Way Back When. His film credits include independent films HeartFelt, Return of the Dragon Sword, A Sense of Sound, and Disregarded, as well as the award-winning documentary GeoFORCE: A Journey to Understanding. He also provides original music to dancers. He has received commissions for concert music by the American Festival Pops Orchestra, Brigham Young University–Idaho concert band, Jazz 4 Justice, and the LDS Church. He has produced three concerts of his original music, including Emerge & Ascend, a benefit concert that raised $1,500. He has also acted as conductor in a number of studio recording sessions.

Thomas received his Masters of Music in Film Scoring from the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program in Seattle, Washington where he studied with two-time Emmy winning film and television composer Hummie Mann. He received his Bachelor of Music in Composition from George Mason University where he studied composition under band composer Mark Camphouse and electronic composer Jesse Guessford, and conducting under Anthony Maiello. In the area of performance, he has studied saxophone under Rick Parrell (U.S. Army Band), Tyler Kuebler (USAF Airmen of Note), and Sandon Mayhew; and piano with John Healey and Danny Beal.

Originally from Boise, Idaho, Thomas currently resides in Los Angeles. A melodious and colorful composer, he hopes to continue bringing evocative, contemporary music to audiences everywhere.

Thomas taught Scarlet (8) flute for 6 months and was fantastic. Scarlet enjoyed the lessons and we wish he hadn't left Seattle. He put in place the building blocks that we hope will lead to Scarlet becoming an accomplished flautist in the coming years. Thanks Thomas!
