Mark D.

Cave Creek, AZ

I played trombone in high school when the sax music got a little boring.
My fondest memory was getting to play 76 trombones at a WVU game, circa 1977.

About Mark

I am experienced at teaching all levels of players.
I studied sax, woodwinds, brass and piano performance at West Virginia Wesleyan College and Berklee School Of Music, and I have a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
In addition to all the book knowledge, I have vast experience in performance - where it counts!
Having played in bands since high school, moving on to Boston and performing with the most sought-after band, Eye2Eye, for 10 years then on to Arizona, playing and singing live in countless venues.

*** Lesson Details ***
I have an easy-going personality and people are comfortable with m
e and I offer great direction and expect students to do their part in order to grow.
For beginning woodwinds and brass, I use the Standard Of Excellence series and once students advance we go to a variety of scale, etude and performance pieces and songs. I prefer to teach classical (legit) music and techniques in conjunction with ear-traing and "street-knowledge" for pop and jazz music. After several months, students will have learned a great deal of technique and will be able to play increasingly challenging music. (trying to keep this brief since I teach a wide variety of instruments and skill levels)

The Trombone happens to be my primary instrument. Playing any brass instrument involves many techniques and music values. I teach all these values as well as a love for instrument.

Our son is taking trumpet lessons with William & is learning rhythm, etc. Those things he didn't get in Kansas; the elementary school students learned just the basics. We know the kids have to start somewhere, but we're so glad our son is learning things he won't find in school. William has an impressive teaching background; it blows my mind that he can play all of these instruments!

I've had 3 lessons with Bill. He is very knowledgeable and believes in teaching the basics of music so that you have a better understanding of how it all goes together. It is a great pleasure to work with him and I expect to do so for a long time. By the way I am nearly 78 years old and have played the clarinet off and on since I was in 5th grade. And now I am being taught the foundation of music for the first time which I have always needed. It is going to make my appreciation of playing so much greater in the future.

Amy Z.

Avondale, AZ

About Amy

Hello there! If you are reading this then you or your child must be interested in learning how to read and play music. I am so excited for the journey you are about to begin!

My name is Amy and I am a certified music teacher. I graduated from Western Michigan University with a degree in instrumental music education and I am nearly finished with my Master's degree in Band Conducting at American Band College. My primary instrument is clarinet. I have taught instrumental music for 10 years in the Valley.

I enjoy teaching students of all ages and abilities, especially beginners! I
teach beginner lessons in piano and brass instruments, beginner to intermediate level woodwinds, and beginner to advanced high-school level clarinet.

*** Lesson Details ***

Lessons with me will be tailored to each student's needs and goals, however note and rhythm reading will be a strong component in each lesson - especially for beginners. I have a very laid back and patient personality but I do feel that practice at home is very important and expect it from my students in order to give them the best chance at success.

As a general rule, young students and those with less than a year of experience on their instrument will likely do best with a 30 minute lesson. More advanced students may opt for the longer 45 minute lesson.

Students with intermediate or advanced ability on their instrument will have the opportunity to have lessons directed towards specific interests such as preparing for chair placement tests, honor band auditions, or solo and ensemble festivals.

*** Required Equipment ***

I have a full size (88 key) digital piano with attached pedal in my home studio for lessons. It is extremely important that students taking piano lessons have an instrument to practice at home - a keyboard is fine if an electric or acoustic piano is not available.

Students playing wind instruments will need to bring their own instrument and supplies (reeds, oil) to their lessons.

Students should rent or purchase an instrument prior to beginning lessons. If you are uncertain what brands are best I would be happy to provide assistance so please don't hesitate to ask any questions that you have before making a decision.

*****Parents and Guardians*****

Parents are welcome to run errands, take a walk, or stay in the car during lessons if that is their preference, just be sure to return on time.

There is a lazyboy and magazines for parents who like to stay for the lessons as well as a table and chairs for those that have work to do.

*** Specialties ***
Working with beginners of all ages.

My son loves Miss Amy! He never once gave me a hard time about going to his piano lesson even when I was pulling him away from playing with his friends. Amy is so patient and supportive and always made my son feel special. I am truly grateful for everything she has done to help my son learn and understand music better. Thank you, Amy! You are simply awesome.

Dylan C.

Phoenix, AZ

Hi! My name is Dylan and I'm excited to be teaching in the Phoenix area. I moved here with my wife from Tucson to pursue a Master's degree, with the goal of eventually earning a DMA in Music Performance and earning a position as a Professor.

I have been teaching for about 7 years, students ranging from elementary to college level. I enjoy teaching because it's a fulfilling job. If my student has left without learning, improving, or feeling challenged, then I haven't done my job well enough.

As my student, I will do my best to ensure that we cover every aspect of trombone playing - technique, fundamentals, musicality, and everything in between. I will cater lessons to your learning style and your desired goals. Lessons are a very important investment, and I make sure that I leave my students feeling accomplished, challenged, and excited about playing.

About Dylan

Trombonist Dylan played his first notes in the state of Texas, and music has allowed him to perform in other cities, states, and even on an international tour of China. A student at the University of Arizona, Carpenter has performed with the University’s Arizona Symphony in multiple sold-out operas, shared the stage at Crowder and Centennial hall with artists such as Bill Watrous, Andy Narell, Michael Davis, and Ben Vereen, and leads his section as Principal in the Wind Ensemble. As a soloist, he made his debut when he was 18, at Sahuarita High School with the Concert Band. Through his studies
, Carpenter has become a versatile musician and a master of many styles.
Dylan’s passion from music stems from the drive he has for enjoying life and all it has to offer.
Mr. Dylan is earned his Bachelor of Music Performance degree at The University of Arizona, where he studied under Moisés Paiewonsky.

Videos of his playing can be found below.

I was in band with Dylan in high school. He was always the best player, and whenever our director was gone, she had him run rehearsal while the sub just sat and watched. Everyone in the band liked him and looked up to him.

Dylan taught my son at Great Expectations Academy about four years ago, when he was in middle school. I couldn't be more proud of my son's improvement, and David always was always very happy coming home from school when Dylan came in to teach lessons.
