I also have been a language and reading tutor for over 6 years and have worked with students with special needs for over 10 years. I studied classical guitar with master guitarist, Christopher Parkening, at Montana State University where I graduated with a B.M.E. I also did graduate work at MSU in composition. I have been teaching beginning cello for seventeen years. I teach both traditional western methods and Suzuki style. I have a Doctorate in Music. I am very experienced teaching all ages. I am very good with young students, teens, as well as adults. You can also hear some of my string quartet album on my Classics Unlimited Music site.
I believe that any student will practice more if he or she likes the music they are playing. Periodically I will ask a student to give me a name of a piece of music that they would like to learn how to play. I notate it for them, often simplifying the rhythm and chords in Finale NotePad and give it to them free of charge. I teach students how to play music on their given instrument. Not just how to play the instrument but working on technique, finger dexterity, expert note reading ability and total musicianship. How to play a piece of music that will move the audience emotionally. I stress vocabulary and music history and theory as part of being a well-trained musician.
I played the cello throughout high school and college. I use the same principles to teach the cello that I do the violin. We focus on correct technique and characteristic sound while developing musicality and a well rounded music education.
I am a recent graduate from the University of Idaho. I earned my degree in Instrumental Music Education and have been teaching privately for 7 years. My main instrument is violin, but I took to other instruments very fast and am very qualified to teach viola, cello, clarinet and saxophone. Before moving to Arizona, I taught many violin students through my own private studio and through the University of Idaho Preparatory Division. My students ranged from ages 3 to 50. I currently teach private instrumental lessons to grades 2-8 at a private school and work at an after school program at a charter school. The majority of my experience is with students age 3 through 8th grade.
My vast experience with performance and the teaching of cello helps me to assist all levels of student from beginner to solo and regional orchestra auditions. I was awarded many scholarships for cello and chamber music study.

My doctoral minor was in music education and also included extensive courses in Spanish. I lived and worked in Mexico with a symphony orchestra for three years. I taught string classes throughout my career. After retirement I taught Spanish to elementary students.
