across. It is because of this that I feel I can help you reach your full potential. It is my goal to share my passion for performing arts with others so that they might become excited about their potential and future. I hope to empower others with the knowledge of using there instrument properly and efficiently so that they may utilize their talents to their fullest potential. Through lessons with me my students will enjoy and flourish in using their talents and become confident in doing so. Both learning and performing should be fun and exciting and that is what my students should know, that I am here to have fun and to help you embrace your natural talents and use them with ease and comfort.
What sets me apart from other teachers at Take Lessons?

I encourage my students to be open and honest with me about each aspect or their lesson so that we can, together, tailor a lesson plan that best fits each individual.

I am also CPR/AED certified- this is just one way to make sure your child or you are safe while taking lessons while me.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are designed to better the performances and techniques of a singer, dancer, or actor.
Techniques such as breathing, diction, pitch, tone, posture, rhythm, smoothness, and stage presence will be practiced. I do my best to develop lessons that are tailored to each student based on their individual needs. Lessons start simply with gentle vocal exercises based on humming and open vowel sounds. Each student can expect to be challenged through exciting a stimulating exercises. I also teach techniques to improve posture, poise and vocal performance. I enjoy using simple scales to improve pitch and volume while also working on clarifying the students voice. A students performance, whether they aspire to be a performer, teacher, or just enjoy performing should have a positive self portrait of themselves. We will work on building confidence so we as performers can take pride in ourselves and what we represent. My students are expected to practice outside of the lesson. I also encourage them to keep a practice journal of when and how long they have practiced. It helps the students to trouble shoot areas of their performance and take the opportunity to ask questions during the next lesson.
My students and I will strive to
- To develop an understanding of basic music theory.
- To take responsibility for their musical and vocal growth.
- To reach for improvement and not perfection.
- To work on the memorization of a performance.
- To try their hardest with each lesson.
- To come to each lesson with an idea of what they would like to achieve.
- To constantly sing correct pitches and rhythms in all songs/performances.
- To practice correct posture and breathe support.
Most importantly,
- To enjoy their performance and learn to embrace the natural talents they are given.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I work from a loft apartment, consisting of an area next to computer with a home recording studio area for music and keyboard. There is also seating for parents if they desire to attend lessons.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I highly suggest the student have their own keyboard/piano. I do have a keyboard and music along with theory books and lesson plans, but would expect a quiet work environment for the student to pay attention.

*** Specialties ***
In dance I am well educated in every area but my strengths include: Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Lyrical and Modern.
In vocal performance and technique: Opera, Musical theater, Lyric Soprano and Alto
Music: Classical, Contemporary, Rock, Pop, Christian, Country, R&B, Hip Hop

I was very lucky to have found Kelly. I had always dreamed of having artistic talent but I am not a naturally good singer. Within two years, I have gone from singing in the shower to having developed to stage performance. Kelly has taught me so much from the artistic expression of singing to the mechanics of turning my voice into an instrument. She has an incredible ability to listen to my voice and pinpoint the exact adjustment I need to make it sound great. She's such a fun person to be around that I always look forward to my next lesson. Her positive attitude and approach is also a testament to her high level of professionalism. She provides feedback that is positive. but also helps me improve She is the perfect combination of teacher and coach and I would highly recommend her for anyone interested in singing.

Kelly has been my 15 year old son's acting instructor for the past three years. Kelly's broad knowledge of acting techniques coupled with her engaging and fun teaching style was a BIG win for my son's self-confidence. Kelly's can do attitude and positive outlook is contagious. She inspires you to want to improve your craft; having fun in the process. Kelly taught my son techniques that are useful in all aspects of communication; skills he can take into his adult life. I would recommend Kelly to anyone who is interested in acting, improv, public speaking or an overall tune up on how to read and respond to social situations. Thanks Kelly!

Veronica K.

River Grove, IL

About Veronica

I began my own piano studies at age 10 and voice studies at age 15. I have been teaching private piano and voice lessons for 10 years to students of many ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. I received my BA with a focus in music performance (piano and voice) from Columbia College Chicago.  I also received my MA in Community Counseling from Northeastern Illinois University.  With that combination of skills, I know how to teach music, pass on an appreciation for music, and develop a rapport with students and families alike. I can teach many styles of piano and voice, and I teach my students pro
per music theory and vocabulary in order to make their education well-rounded and transferable to multiple musical settings and instruments. My own music experience includes solo performance, ensemble/band performance, theater performance, and songwriting. I am currently in two bands, and I am developing a jazz and songwriting repertoire to perform as a solo vocalist/pianist.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am somewhere between strict and laid back. I definitely want my students to master the skills I teach them, but I don't have a time line for mastery as I believe everyone learns at their own pace and in their own way. I encourage regular practicing, but I also encourage practicing in moderation in order to avoid burn-out. I use a variety of curriculum depending on the student's musical ability, age, instrument (piano or voice), and musical goals. Generally, a young student will have learned the most fundamental aspects of their instrument and be ready to start performing after about one year of lessons (I offer a yearly recital every June). If the student is older, this process may be faster. I do not recommend that students under 10 years of age take voice lessons without also studying piano, as piano will give students a more thorough music awareness/education.

*** Studio Equipment ***
I have a microphone, sound system, baby grand piano, and electric piano in my home studio. I also have many, many music books.

*** Specialties ***
I can teach all styles of piano and all contemporary styles of voice, beginner to intermediate/advanced. I am trained in classical piano and jazz/blues piano, and with that background, I am able to teach many other styles, including accompaniment skills. I am trained in jazz/blues voice and musical theater voice, and I have been trained extensively in classical techniques, although I do not sing opera. My personal favorite, however, is the jazz/blues sound.

When I teach any beginners in piano, I always use method books. I also reference some books to help my voice students understand the mechanisms going on in their body. With more advanced students, I tend to pick challenging pieces out of the variety of books I have in my studio (too many to list), or I help them work on the pieces they bring to me.

Outstanding Piano instruction!

My son has taken piano lessons from Ms. Kott for over 3 years now, and we cannot say enough about her. She is that rare combination of encouraging, enthusiastic, yet serious teacher that you hope to find for your child. Not only has our son learned the basics, he has also learned theory along the way. She is reliable, relatable, and a great gauge of their personalities. I would, and do recommend her to everyone. In fact, this year my younger son has started lessons too! If you'd like a teacher who will help your child learn in a supportive, encouraging, yet professional environment, Ms. Kott is the perfect teacher for you.

Molly M.

Schaumburg, IL

About Molly

I have been teaching for 14 years: kids, teens-even beginner vocalists in their seventies! Rockers, an "Idol" finalist, church musicians, lapsed opera singers, preschoolers. ...these are just a few of singers I have worked with, in person, in the classroom, and ONLINE (I just love teaching singers all over the country and the world!) .

What you get in voice lessons with me: laughter as you learn! I have learned solid classical vocal technique from the very best . I have trained with respected opera singers who have performed with companies such as Lyric Opera of Chicago, as well as leader
s in vocal pedagogy. I believe everyone deserves the same useful tools- no matter what it is you like to sing!

I am patient and customize each and every lesson. Need more time on ear training? No problem . How about beginning music theory? I can help with that, too. Are you feeling more confident, and want to focus more on song polishing and getting into the heart of your songs? Let's do it! Confidence an issue? I am a pro with very shy people. I'll get you out of your shell, relaxed, and having fun right away so we can free that voice of yours! I have worked with many singers who have been diagnosed with anxiety: you're in good hands and you can trust me with your voice.

I am also a drama teacher who has worked with groups as well as individuals. I love working with beginning acting students! I'll assist with monologue prep, improvisation, voice for the stage, body awareness, and more. I love being on stage and want you to see how fun it is to jump in and let go,too!

If you're interested in beginner ear training or music theory, I'd love to help you with that as well. I present it in a no-nonsense and fun manner! I'll provide you with simple worksheets to increase your confidence in learning the language of music, as well as run you through increasingly challenging patterns and sight reading for the ear training. Don't be afraid: I make it easy and customize it all.

I have been singing for over 20 years. Performances with the Lira Ensemble and Opera on Tap Chicago, and in master classes with international opera stars Alan Held and Lorna Haywood. Coaching with Collaborative Works Chicago and Rossini Opera Festival. Additional studies in Rock Vocals, Voice Care, Improvisational Comedy, Holistic Voice, Acting, Foreign languages, Dalcroze, Speaking Voice for Singers, , Commercial Vocal Styles/Belting with Lisa Popeil, teacher mentoring workshop with Maestro David Jones. Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. Additional workshops in Vocal Pedagogy with David Sabella-Mills, Jeannie LoVetri. Dr. Karen Prokop.

Certified CoreSinging Instructor- one of only a few in the U.S. trained by Meribeth Dayme, PhD, respected clinician and authority in vocal pedagogy and author of "The Singing Book".

My students do a variety of great things! One was a top 12 "American Idol" finalist. Current students perform in musicals, top rated choirs, and professional rock , jazz, and blues bands. Many have won awards for their singing at competitions such as NATS. Students of mine have also been accepted to prestigious performing arts high schools and undergraduate music programs.

I think if you can speak, you can sing. Everyone can and should sing! Don't let anything hold you back. I am a people person that is very passionate about music and singing, and want to be the teacher you'll trust with your voice. Come laugh and learn with me!

Qazi is a serious tutor; I like that about him. He is also very intelligent. What I like about Qazi is that he balances the simple and the complex very skillfully. We reviewed terminal commands and started with Python. He knows his stuff but he doesn't brag. He lets the results speak for themselves. I am proud to be his student.

I have been working with Rafeh for 6 months and the results are far better than I could have imagined. When I started, I was a total programming novice. I began an online Coursera class in R programming and Rafeh’s help was the only way I could have completed it. He is a flexible and patient teacher. I found that he was committed to my full understanding of foundational concepts. He was not merely concerned with getting the answers right and getting through the class. Together, he guided me through several online courses using both Python and R. He has given me enough of a programming base to be accepted into a master’s program for analytics. This wouldn’t have been possible without his help.

Rafeh is a pleasure to work with. He has a friendly demeanor and is flexible with his scheduling. He is very knowledgeable in computer science, yet is able to explain to a total beginner. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone.
