About Heather M.
More important than my conservatory education and my experience as an educator and a performer is my passion for teaching music and acting and my undying belief that anyone can learn to be a musician
and an actor. I'm currently available to teach lessons in my own St. Augustine home studio, and online around the globe.

I'm a cum laude graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship.
After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internationally renowned opera star, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College and performance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across the east coast, I found my life's work in 2003 when I began teaching music.

I've successfully taught hundreds of different students since 2003, from 5-year-olds with special needs to middle-aged professional opera singers, from a professor in Saudi Arabia to a 65-year-old doctor of music, from kids of Radio Disney to students of the famed Actors Studio in New York, from busy stay-at-home parents to retirees with bucket lists.

I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". I've written dozens of articles about music and music education for the blog at TakeLessons.com.

My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and empowered hundreds of singers and prepared many of them to win competitions, pageants and auditions, as well as roles in operas and musicals.

Having both taught myself piano and received formal training at a conservatory has prepared me to teach almost anyone how to play.
The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sight reading has benefited my students at every level.

My current work as singer and keyboardist in the acoustic rock duo, Timberwood, has strengthened my knowledge of a broad range of styles and genres. I have a strong commitment to continuing my education. That's why I recently (2014) studied songwriting online with the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

In the lessons that I teach, I'm flexible, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate. In piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire. In voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music.
Acting lessons consist of exercises and games that apply learned concepts, and monologue and audition coaching. Parents, siblings and spouses are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide an acoustic guitar to bring to both voice and guitar lessons. I expect my piano students to have a piano, an organ or a keyboard.

***Home Studio Equipment***
In my home studio, my students will have access to an acoustic guitar, an electronic keyboard, an acoustic piano and PC audio recording.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching classical, country, pop and musical theater singing, classical and pop/rock/chordal style piano, and sightreading, including solfege syllables. I enjoy using Estelle Liebling as my voice method and Hanon for piano technique. My education includes coursework in jazz and pop theory and songwriting from both Westminster Choir College and the Berklee College. Teaching special needs individuals is also one of my specialties, and one that I highly enjoy. I've been trained in Meisner technique, and have experience in both theatre acting and musical theatre.

About Jenny
I'm a lifelong student who loves learning! My passion for education has led me to pursue studies in a wide field of subjects. I have been teaching private lessons, tutoring and teaching workshops/clas
ses in a variety of subjects for nearly a decade. I have taught ages 4-65 in a variety of settings. I'm extremely adaptable.

I have also been performing improv, comedy, theatre as well as writing, storytelling and exploring creative topics my entire life. I have always had a passion for uninhibited creativity that uses a solid foundation in theory and practice. Using a practical approach to right brain activities, I am able to merge creative desires and it's practical applications in an effective and fun space that students love to explore!

Students who take my lessons walk away with not only pragmatic advice and theory but incredible confidence, passion and a desire to explore their creative subjects further.

I graduated from the University of North Florida with a degree in English. I furthered my studies with a graduate degree at Queen's University. After graduating college in 2005, I began working as an independent researcher for several non-profit and government organizations including the Florida Commission on Human Relations. My work with those organizations prepared me for a career in Academic Writing and teaching. I have an interest in a variety of subjects and have written many research papers for organizations and companies. This experience has given me the opportunity to expand my areas of knowledge and interests.

I tutor a variety of subjects including English, Reading, Writing, Test Prep, Study Skills and Acting/Theatre. I believe encouragement and support is of upmost importance. I teach with compassion and understanding, first and foremost. My lessons are customized to each individual's needs and I offer progress reports, constructive criticism and homework assignments as needed. Most importantly, I want to make sure that each lesson sees the student walking away feeling empowered, encouraged, confident and successful.

As I approach tutoring with honesty and respect, I expect my students to be held to the same standard. In this way, I encourage feedback.

I look forward to speaking with you about your goals and how I can help you achieve them!

I haven't acted in years and felt very self-conscious about getting back into it. Jenny listened to why I wanted to start again, what my ultimate goals are, and assured me she would guide me as far as she could. She made me feel at ease almost immediately, and has been the best acting coach I have ever had. When I find myself struggling with a certain character or monologue, she doesn't judge or get irritated. She knows exactly what to say and tweak to make me get it perfect. She's so supportive of where I want to go and has not made me feel like I'm aiming for something completely out of my reach. She listens and shows that she cares, not only about our lessons, but personally as well. I feel very fortunate to have found her and would not leave her for anyone else. She's guided me to alternate acting seminars, which I have registered for, and with her lessons, I feel ready to take this new opportunity on. I wouldn't have been this confident 6 weeks ago. Thanks to her, I not only feel better at acting, but I feel more confident in my every day life. I highly recommend everyone look into her classes and give her a chance. She's the best!

Kara taught me singing for over a year when she lived in Pennsylvania. She not only helped me with technique, but helped me find confidence in myself. Now I sing in front of my family and friends without getting so nervous.
