Jessica is a teacher with over a decade's experience and also has a serious career as a solo vocalist. Her performances have garnered praise for their “…virtuosic whimsy” (New York Times), “expressive flexibility, combined with imagination…” (The Sydney Morning Herald) and “…utmost security and power...” (Chicago Tribune).
She teaches students of all ages and musical backgrounds and has a Masters degree in music from the University of California. Jessica teaches in a range of styles; from opera and theatre, to jazz and singer-song writing. She is passionate about voice and helps her student
s to master their voices through a foundation in a body-oriented vocal technique. She encourages students to become knowledgeable about the music they perform and to develop the skills to be clear and expressive vocal communicators.
When not teaching, Jessica is a professional vocal soloist who performs with ensembles around the world, especially in her native Australia where she has been a soloist with many of their orchestras and opera companies. She is also a recording artist on labels including Chandos, Ars Publica and Hospital Hill. As a performer, she specializes in adventurous repertoire; singing opera, chamber music, experimental, conventional and contemporary-classical music. Her love of experimentation influences her teaching. She takes an exploratory approach to finding the best ways to help each individual student improve.
*** Lesson Details *** A first lesson will always begin with getting to know each other. It is important to me that we figure out why a student has come to have lessons and to decide on the best path forward to help them reach their goals. Lessons will include a mix of technical work (to improve vocal tone quality, range, flexibility and ease) and working on repertoire. Students can bring in songs they want to learn and we work on them together. Alternately, I might suggest appropriate pieces to complement other things we are working on (for example, if we are working on improving some aspect of a students listening skills, I might suggest a piece that helps to cement that learning, or if we are trying to improve a student's ease in a particular part of their range, we might work on a piece that uses that part of their range).

She is a wonderful coach and I have enjoyed my time so far working with her. I've been to 3 other vocal teachers in Chicago over the years, and she is by far the best. She is the first teacher I have been to in years who has helped me grow as a performer and help me see noticeable results.
First and foremost, Jessica is able to teach the correct techniques of signing and she brings this to the forefront. She is clearly very knowledgeable about the physical aspects of great singing and clearly explains and shows how everything within the body works together to create sound. She is very creative in recommending exercises and things to practice in order to improve overall technique and capabilities.
Don't let the technical approach fool you, though; Jessica is extremely expressive and has a real passion for singing and helping others sing to the best ability. She has a wide repertoire and can teach music of all different genres and styles, making it fun along the way (whether classical, jazz, modern, show tunes, opera, etc.). She provides in-the-moment feedback too help push to make pieces performance ready.
Finally, she is a great overall performance coach, providing recommendations on ways to calm nerves, act with a piece, etc. and has some great tips and perspective on helping prepare for an audition.
I would highly recommend Jessica as a teacher.

Daniel, a former faculty member of Columbia College in Chicago, is a studio and live performance singer and musician based in Chicago. His teaching and performing experience spans three decades, and includes expertise in the studies of voice, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and trumpet, along with music theory, arranging, and composing. He is a Lincoln Academy Student Laureate who holds a BA in Music Composition, and has attended graduate courses in education at Roosevelt University and DePaul University in Chicago. He has taught students of all ages at private studios, public school, and college.
Daniel is described by his students as a natural teacher. He prefers to be regarded as an advancing student, and takes the journey along with his students to guide them towards their goals with a friendly, positive, efficient and productive approach. He feels that music is within all of us, and a desire to learn is a sign of talent, so anyone can develop their musical abilities with methodical practice.
The musical journey for Daniel began at an early age with trumpet and piano studies which became a passion for him by the age of 14. He was the drum major of the high school marching band, and successfully completed a paid contract to arrange music for the high school jazz band which performed in a state beauty pageant. He began teaching privately after high school, and continued playing in bands, and composing original music. He formed a professional jazz ensemble under the name of the Chicago Jazz Players by the age of 22, and developed his arranging techniques while having it performed by an eighteen piece orchestra consisting of many great local artists. It was in this environment that he gained experience with brass, woodwinds, and rhythm instruments. He was granted a position at Columbia College as an instructor at age 29 where he taught theory, sight singing, musicianship, ear training, harmony, orchestration, and composition. He scored the music for several plays, and conducted his own pieces with Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera Players. During those years he found himself playing the guitar and singing more than anything else. It was in 1995 that he focused on singing and playing the guitar with his rock band. He has produced several CD recordings of his original music in his own studio, and has helped produce local bands and artists. He performs regularly in the Chicago area.
*** Lesson Details *** Daniel exhibits patience and care with each student, and develops an individualized approach based on clear goals with practical procedures. Most beginners can expect to have a working knowledge of music notation and how it applies to their instrument within three months, and should be developing fluency in performing music that they enjoy within six months. Advancing students will enjoy the rewards that will follow by studying with an experienced teaching musician that will recognize strengths and weaknesses, and recommend proven techniques for personal musical development. Studying music should be fun, fulfilling, and in harmony with the needs and desires of the student, and this is key to the philosophy held by Daniel.

Daniel is a natural teacher and inspires his students to share his love for music. He has a lot of experience and is patient with learners of all abilities. I have had 3 lessons with him so far and have thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I am new to singing but learned piano when I was younger so I am not entirely new to music. He has helped me expand my horizons and believe in what I can do with my voice. During class, we cover music theory as well as the actual singing part. Progress will go faster if you study the theory on your own (he provides you with all the materials you need to learn) and come prepared.

*** Lesson Details *** Lessons are designed to better the performances and techniques of a singer, dancer, or actor. Techniques such as breathing, diction, pitch, tone, posture, rhythm, smoothness, and stage presence will be practiced. I do my best to develop lessons that are tailored to each student based on their individual needs. Lessons start simply with gentle vocal exercises based on humming and open vowel sounds. Each student can expect to be challenged through exciting a stimulating exercises. I also teach techniques to improve posture, poise and vocal performance. I enjoy using simple scales to improve pitch and volume while also working on clarifying the students voice. A students performance, whether they aspire to be a performer, teacher, or just enjoy performing should have a positive self portrait of themselves. We will work on building confidence so we as performers can take pride in ourselves and what we represent. My students are expected to practice outside of the lesson. I also encourage them to keep a practice journal of when and how long they have practiced. It helps the students to trouble shoot areas of their performance and take the opportunity to ask questions during the next lesson. I was very lucky to have found Kelly. I had always dreamed of having artistic talent but I am not a naturally good singer. Within two years, I have gone from singing in the shower to having developed to stage performance. Kelly has taught me so much from the artistic expression of singing to the mechanics of turning my voice into an instrument. She has an incredible ability to listen to my voice and pinpoint the exact adjustment I need to make it sound great. She's such a fun person to be around that I always look forward to my next lesson. Piano: DO NOT BUY A "PIANO" with reduced size keys. The width of seven white keys is 16.4cm, and you should also have weighted keys and a sustain pedal. DO NOT try to teach your fingers to play piano on anything that has "full size keys" (which is a LIE) that measure 15.9cm. The retail store person is probably clueless, so take something to measure the keys with. I teach beginning up to intermediate. Ages 18-99. Available only in my office or maybe off site. SOME IMPORTANT DETAILS TO CONSIDER: - My home is not child proof. I am not prepared to welcome children into my home. - The apartment is a high 2nd FLR walk-up. - If you use too much fragrance of any kind I will refuse to breathe in your vicinity. - Unless you are that person's legal guardian please do not purchase a surprise gift of a new student lesson package with me. Students need to make the decisions for themselves to begin lessons with me specifically. - If you don't have a place to practice singing, don't take singing lessons. If you don't have regular access to a piano, or at least a minimally acceptable keyboard, don't take piano lessons. You can take beginning theory lessons with a plastic recorder flute, if that's all you've got, but a polytonal keyboard is much better.
You, and all students, must ACCEPT THE STRICT CANCELLATION POLICY. There is no makeup, rescheduling, or refunding of any lessons no-showed or cancelled later than 24hrs prior. Students can provide excuses (like acute illness) and request forgiveness for late cancellations, but expect no mercy for no-shows. Officially, if you have a lesson scheduled in less than 24hrs and you haven't already changed or cancelled it, you are paying for it unless I'm the one that changes it.

I am a working actor from Chicago as well as a member of SAG/AFTRA since 2009. Since graduating from Illinois State University in 2003, I hit the ground running and worked with Chicago Dance Crash for 3 years as a company member. I solidified my theater acting muscles for 4 years before moving to LA in 2007 and worked on 2 films, Heist and Ingles Ya in addition to national commercials for Soapnet, Gaterade and Pepsi, just to name a few.
