Mara D.

Chicago, IL

About Mara

I graduated with a BFA in Acting/Theatre from the theatre program at Syracuse University (SU). During my time there, I studied at the Globe Theatre in London, in addition to spending a semester taking classes with Broadway and TV/Film Casting agents in New York City. I've done a few musicals in regional theatres in New York. And currently, I am a working actor in and around the city of Chicago. I have experience music directing, directing, choreographing, and teaching acting and voice throughout the year for a elementary/middle/high school students and programs around the Chicagoland area. In
addition, I music direct and teach private voice lessons for an adult a cappella group in Chicago called Fear Experiment. I studied voice, music theory, piano, acting, and dance within the SU theatre program and have been teaching for over 10 years. In addition, I taught music and theatre to special needs adults for all four years of college.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am energetic, positive, and specific. In lessons, we will focus on properly using your breath and body to have the best technique possible. Singing is easy and fun and I hope to instill that in all my students. I like to get work done while still smiling and laughing. Between 1 to 6 months, you can expect to have a stronger and fuller voice/sound, feel more confident singing/acting, and perform with more ease. We will stretch your vocal range so you begin to sing even higher and lower than before! I like to start the lesson with warm-ups and vocalizations, work in a little music theory, and then work on repertoire. I have many repertoire books and can help you choose songs that best fit your age, gender, and personality. However, you can also have the option of bringing in pieces you need to work on for auditions, shows, or just for fun! I encourage students to record the lesson so that you can practice between lessons and record notes if you are learning a song. I think music and theatre allows people to express themselves, gain confidence, and use their creativity/imagination. Great technique is a solid foundation for developing skills and individuality in your craft and a long career.

I had a great first lesson. She listened to my goals and concerns about my voice and then in a short half hour lesson worked me though many exercises that really helped me address my concerns and are helping me reach my goals. She is friendly and easy to work with but good at keeping me on track.

Molly M.

Schaumburg, IL

About Molly

I have been teaching for 14 years: kids, teens-even beginner vocalists in their seventies! Rockers, an "Idol" finalist, church musicians, lapsed opera singers, preschoolers. ...these are just a few of singers I have worked with, in person, in the classroom, and ONLINE (I just love teaching singers all over the country and the world!) .

What you get in voice lessons with me: laughter as you learn! I have learned solid classical vocal technique from the very best . I have trained with respected opera singers who have performed with companies such as Lyric Opera of Chicago, as well as leader
s in vocal pedagogy. I believe everyone deserves the same useful tools- no matter what it is you like to sing!

I am patient and customize each and every lesson. Need more time on ear training? No problem . How about beginning music theory? I can help with that, too. Are you feeling more confident, and want to focus more on song polishing and getting into the heart of your songs? Let's do it! Confidence an issue? I am a pro with very shy people. I'll get you out of your shell, relaxed, and having fun right away so we can free that voice of yours! I have worked with many singers who have been diagnosed with anxiety: you're in good hands and you can trust me with your voice.

I am also a drama teacher who has worked with groups as well as individuals. I love working with beginning acting students! I'll assist with monologue prep, improvisation, voice for the stage, body awareness, and more. I love being on stage and want you to see how fun it is to jump in and let go,too!

If you're interested in beginner ear training or music theory, I'd love to help you with that as well. I present it in a no-nonsense and fun manner! I'll provide you with simple worksheets to increase your confidence in learning the language of music, as well as run you through increasingly challenging patterns and sight reading for the ear training. Don't be afraid: I make it easy and customize it all.

I have been singing for over 20 years. Performances with the Lira Ensemble and Opera on Tap Chicago, and in master classes with international opera stars Alan Held and Lorna Haywood. Coaching with Collaborative Works Chicago and Rossini Opera Festival. Additional studies in Rock Vocals, Voice Care, Improvisational Comedy, Holistic Voice, Acting, Foreign languages, Dalcroze, Speaking Voice for Singers, , Commercial Vocal Styles/Belting with Lisa Popeil, teacher mentoring workshop with Maestro David Jones. Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance. Additional workshops in Vocal Pedagogy with David Sabella-Mills, Jeannie LoVetri. Dr. Karen Prokop.

Certified CoreSinging Instructor- one of only a few in the U.S. trained by Meribeth Dayme, PhD, respected clinician and authority in vocal pedagogy and author of "The Singing Book".

My students do a variety of great things! One was a top 12 "American Idol" finalist. Current students perform in musicals, top rated choirs, and professional rock , jazz, and blues bands. Many have won awards for their singing at competitions such as NATS. Students of mine have also been accepted to prestigious performing arts high schools and undergraduate music programs.

I think if you can speak, you can sing. Everyone can and should sing! Don't let anything hold you back. I am a people person that is very passionate about music and singing, and want to be the teacher you'll trust with your voice. Come laugh and learn with me!

*** Lesson Details ***

Daniel G.

Chicago, IL

About Daniel

I am a voice instructor living in Chicago. I am in my mid-twenties and have been hired to sing with regional opera companies around the Chicago. I am originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin but have received my Masters in Music Performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music.
Familiarizing myself with my surroundings has always been my best way of learning. Context has always provided me with a good base of knowledge to grow from. This is how I believe teaching should also be. Being aware of where a person comes from, why they surround themselves with what they do and noticing how they
can relate to you are important factors for me as a teacher. As a student, I pursue knowledge to the most intimate detail and try to find related information to form a proper conclusion about any topic, whether it is writing, music or trigonometry.
As a teacher I aim to speak using the vocabulary that my professors impressed on me. I hope adjust my terms and concepts in a logical and digestible way for each of my specific students with regards to their strengths. I believe that it is vital to treat each student with respect, confidence and encouragement at an early stage and provide proper motivation for a student at a more developed stage. I like to teach on an even level with the student by doing the same exercises alongside them. My teaching has always been organic. I provide knowledge to nearly every person I am familiar with; whether it is a weather forecast or an upcoming film that I researched. My need to express knowledge comes out in a useful and colorful way. I relate different sources to whatever I encounter in life and I choose to link that knowledge to my daily interactions in a spontaneous and rewarding way of life. As a teacher I choose not to shield any of my personality from my students, seeing as the student is the one that is the most exposed and humbled in the classroom.
I teach this way because I am still searching for another way to impart my knowledge. I know that my way of teaching works for those people I have previously taught but I want my way of expressing information to be individual and universal. I know that I cannot possibly be the perfect teacher to anyone and I hope that someone continues to humble me as I develop. I understand that I teach the way I do because I have important knowledge that should be shared with the world. I also know that I teach the way I do because I have the tools to teach anyone as long as I put my mind to the task. I am to understand my students fully and commit myself to their education.

I am so happy I decided to take lessons with Holly. She is not only incredibly accommodating when it comes to meeting up, but I've also learned so much from her! She both challenges and encourages me in the rehearsal space and helps me to think outside the box. Every time I have a coaching session with her, I feel so much more confident in the audition room. Holly has also aided me in choosing monologues that best represent me and the different types of roles that I audition for. She has provided me with wisdom and insight about the business in general, and I'm so thankful for her influence.

Qazi is a serious tutor; I like that about him. He is also very intelligent. What I like about Qazi is that he balances the simple and the complex very skillfully. We reviewed terminal commands and started with Python. He knows his stuff but he doesn't brag. He lets the results speak for themselves. I am proud to be his student.

I have been working with Rafeh for 6 months and the results are far better than I could have imagined. When I started, I was a total programming novice. I began an online Coursera class in R programming and Rafeh’s help was the only way I could have completed it. He is a flexible and patient teacher. I found that he was committed to my full understanding of foundational concepts. He was not merely concerned with getting the answers right and getting through the class. Together, he guided me through several online courses using both Python and R. He has given me enough of a programming base to be accepted into a master’s program for analytics. This wouldn’t have been possible without his help.

Rafeh is a pleasure to work with. He has a friendly demeanor and is flexible with his scheduling. He is very knowledgeable in computer science, yet is able to explain to a total beginner. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to anyone.
