I'm a classically trained leading soprano who has had the great good fortune to sing masterpieces with such companies as the Caramoor Music Festival, Glimmerglass Opera and the Aspen Music Festival. I also have undergraduate and master's degrees from Brown University and the Manhattan School of Music.

But don't let the fact that I'm an "opera singer" give you the wrong idea. Yes, strict classical training gives me in-depth understanding of how the human voice works, but I love and teach music of all genres. My students include professional opera singers, yes, but also rock and Broadway-style singers, college and conservatory students, teenagers singing in their school musicals, doing All-State chorus, or preparing for NYSSMA, as well as adults who are taking voice for the love of singing, the fun of the challenge and so they can join their local chorus or sound great on karaoke night.

Above all, the most important qualities I offer as a teacher are the simple human ones: understanding, patience, imagination, kindness, enthusiasm, respectfulness and absolute commitment to helping you meet your vocal goals.

*** Lesson Details ***

I tailor my lessons to each singer's particular interests, goals and challenges. Some students thrive with a highly technical approach; some thrive in a less formal, more supportive environment; most singers do best with an approach that mixes the two. The important thing to know is that you will receive lessons that are specifically tailored to you. There's no single template.

*** Specialties ***

For advanced classical singers I have a great depth of experience and wide knowledge of oratorio, opera, German lied and French, English and American art songs. I also have a specialized background in "performance practice" baroque and classical vocal ornamentation.

For all singers, I am also a superb acting coach!

What makes Nancy special as a voice teacher is her ability to understand her student.
I did not want to become a professional, I just wanted to be able to sing in my church choir and not sound
completely off. It turns out that there is a lot to singing which I had no knowledge of, the most important part is
being relaxed and breathing properly. With her help I am singing much better than I ever thought I could and singing with my choir with so much more confidence!

I highly recommend Nancy. She is patient (with me one often has to repeat segments over and over until they come out right), she
never gets upset and she knows how to encourage you when you do well. She is warm and funny and it is a pleasure to have her as a teacher and a coach.

Nancy is awesome! I'm so happy I have this opportunity to tell everyone what a really great person and teacher she is. She's really demanding (but in a nice way) and knows her stuff technically, but she's also really encouraging and kind and I feel like she "gets" her students.

I'm going into my junior year at Cornell where I'm studying pre-med, and believe it or not I really feel like voice lessons with Nancy helped me get here. I love singing, but never had much confidence. I started taking lessons with Nancy my senior year in high school and she helped me sing so much better than I ever thought i could. She was really supportive of my song-writing too. I ended up getting a good part in the school musical (I went to a super competitive high school too) and performing my own songs at a couple of local venues.

Then as part of my college applications she suggested that I include a recording of me performing some French art songs by Claude Debussy. Not that I was a classical singer or was even going to study music seriously in college, but my family is French and I really like the poetry of Paul Verlaine. Nancy introduced me to some cool Debussy settings of Verlaine poems. I thought the songs would be way too hard for me, but with Nancy's help I actually sang them really well and did a good recording that I think helped set me apart in my college applications.

Now when I come back home I always have a few lessons with Nancy. (I still compose and perform my own songs) And don't tell anyone, but she's a lot better than any of the voice teachers at Cornell! Not naming names of course.

It is a joy to offer Reiki to curious, open clients in need of energy healing. Reiki is a noninvasive energy healing technique totally separate of any religious affiliation and available to anyone. About Juan

New York city based guitarist and composer Juan C. immigrated to Miami, Florida at age 21.
His work speaks a unique language that blends elements from his early musical experiences in Colombia, as a member of various folk, rock (metal ) ensembles, and his studies in East Asian music fueled by travels and interaction with musicians and artists in China and Japan.

Juan’s music has been performed throughout South America, the United States and Asia. Although Juan cannot return to his native Colombia, his string duet, “Famous Librarians” (commissioned by Olivia de Prato and Victor Lowrie,
was premiered at the Medellín Conservatory of Music.) His piece for electric bass and keyboard, “Glue Pain Ghost,” a collaboration with video artist, Jane Hsu, was invited to a world premiere at the GEISAI Art festival in Tokyo, and the Art Basel festival in Miami.

Juan holds a Master of Music from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of Susan Botti in composition, and electronic music with Joel Chadabe. He also holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Miami Dade College, where he studied jazz guitar with Tom Lippincott, and the University of Florida, where he studied composition with Susan Epstein.

*** Lesson Details ***
Guitar teaching encompasses many disciplines. One has to be a bit of a psychologist in order to gauge a potential student needs and musical sensibilities. The mathematical aspect of musical notation and rhythm makes us part mathematicians. In the end, there is also a self-actualizing aspect to guitar teaching in the sense that we are always witness to those moments that made us decide a career on music.
During my years of guitar teaching I have encountered many types of students, and I have learned from them as much as they have learned from me as they make me question aspects of music that I would have never thought about. I have learned to not take for granted the definition of concepts such as rhythm and harmony, and to look at guitar technique from different perspectives as I find ways to accommodate to a student’s capabilities. Ultimately, it is also a job that requires a lot of planning and structure. My first step, generally, is to assess the student’s ability and interest to find material suitable for them. Then, I proceed to familiarize with the student’s musical tastes and sensibilities to assign practice material accordingly. For example, if the student is interested in rock or pop music, we will work on a particular song that fits his level and also solves a particular technical problem. During that process I will answer any of the student’s questions, and provide insight into musical terminology. We will also work on basic concepts of rhythm, melody, and harmony. My training as a composer and jazz guitarists also enables me to tap into the student’s creative side. In that case, we would start with a basic blues progression and blues scales, and work on the basics of improvisation or songwriting.

With a patient and intuitive approach, Juan tailors each lesson to fit not only the student’s skill level, but also desire for depth of understanding. When I first began taking lessons, I was only able to plunk a few chords and play along with a few basic songs. However, over the course of a year and a half with Juan, I gained a foundational knowledge of the classical guitar, as well as the confidence to site read and play a range of other styles of guitar music. He seamlessly integrated music theory concepts into song studies, helping me learn major/minor scales and chord shapes, and then apply this knowledge to better understand song structures and composition. It has been such a great experience learning from Juan, especially because he is both an exemplary teacher and guitar player!

I have spent one year locking myself up in my room, every day for a few hours at a time, stumbling my way to learning the guitar. On my own, I have made it far enough to be familiar with a repertoire of chords, able to learn songs and even develop the mindset for habit forming. For the last fifteen years, I have taught piano lessons to children, college students, amateurs, and Grammy award-winning professionals. I started teaching while working on my masters degree at The Juilliard School. Since then, I have performed throughout the United States and earned a doctoral degree in piano performance, but these days most of what I do is teach. I am classically trained, though I have worked with students on a range of musical styles. I get tremendous satisfaction from helping my students overcome their challenges. Regardless of the age or experience that a student brings,
my goal is to help make piano playing personally enriching and musically satisfying.

Here are the qualities I think you should look for in a teacher and the ways in which I think I offer them.

MUSICALITY
A teacher should have an ear for what makes music colorful and beautiful. You are welcome to listen to some of my recordings at https://soundcloud.com/david-shimoni-piano. I believe that the goal of musicians should be to attune our inner ears to the music behind the notes that sit on a page before us and then let that music flow through us. We all hear different qualities in the notes, but as long as we honestly try to get inside the notes before we touch our instrument, we can all make beautiful music.

TECHNIQUE
Once we have an idea of the way we want the music to sound, we need technique to produce those sounds. Early in my training, I experienced discomfort from the poor way in which I was playing. As a result, I had to retrain myself completely. I was fortunate enough to find three teachers of the Taubman Approach who helped me to understand the connections between playing in a coordinated way and playing beautifully. As a result of having made many mistakes myself and then overcoming them, I have developed the ability to see what is holding back my students and to help them find better ways of approaching the piano.

MATERIALS
The best music for students is the music that motivates them to practice. That said, at certain times, I think some pieces will help a student get to the next level, and others will only tie the student in knots. I have taught a lot of repertoire in a variety of styles. I can give students at any level music that is appropriate for them. I am also always eager to work on music that my students bring me.

To give students skills that directly apply to their playing, I also incorporate theory, ear training, sight reading, and scales into lessons.

INSTRUMENT
Although I have no qualms about teaching students who have electric keyboards, acoustic instruments give better aural feedback to pianists about the health of their technique. At least once a week I make sure my students get to play on an instrument that responds to their efforts with a beautiful sound: either my own 1913 Steinway B, or one of a variety of good grand pianos at the midtown studio where I teach.

PRACTICE METHODS
Students can expect to learn a lot in their lessons, but lessons usually only happen once a week. The quality and quantity of the student’s practice the rest of the week is critical. At each point in the process of learning a piece, there are different practice methods that help a pianist get to the next step. I think I can see where students are in the learning process and can guide their practice so that their time spent at home is optimized.

PERFORMANCE EXPERIENCE
Many students enjoy playing music for themselves, but when they are asked to play for others, the joy of the experience turns into fear of embarrassment. There is no quick and easy solution to performance anxiety, but having worked through it in hundreds of performances, I can say there are certainly ways to reduce it and even make performing joyful. Understanding that playing for others is an experience of sharing, not “impressing,” and practicing in a way that helps one to see, hear, and feel the music the instant before one plays it are at the core of my method.

PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES
I teach children and adult students. I do not force anyone to perform, though I encourage it. I am a member of two associations of independent piano teachers that sponsor recitals and competitions for my young students. My adult students and I usually get together at my apartment twice a year for a piano-food-fest.

FLEXIBILITY
Ultimately, there is no single way to teach all students. Students come to me with different degrees of musical training, physical awareness and dexterity, musical tastes, discipline, and patience. It is my job to figure out what will light each student’s fire and help them to practice through their challenges so that they can enjoy the beautiful and all-consuming experience of making music.

I had a great experience taking piano lessons from David. After several years away from the piano, I wasn't entirely sure where to start. David took me back to the beginning and focused on fundamentals and technique. Not only did this improve my playing, but it also helped me develop awareness of areas that I could work on when I practiced. I found David to be a wonderful teacher who teaches a good balance of technique and artistry, and I would take lessons with him again.

I always wanted to learn how to play the piano and it wasn't until the age of 29 that I decided that there was no better time than now to start taking lessons. As a beginner, I am so thankful to have David as my teacher. He stressed the importance of technique even though he knows that I just really want to learn how to play so I could show off at a dinner party. Without this, I wouldn't have progressed as quickly as I have. He is incredibly patient, which is what I like most about him as a teacher. Given that I started with David as a true beginner, he had to go over the same things repeatedly, for months on end, and he was never once impatient. He also thinks about his students outside of his lessons and that speaks volumes. I only like certain types of music and am quite stubborn about only playing what I like. He not only understands this but will send me links to songs and brings pieces of music to our lesson because I often have difficulty finding pieces that I like or that are the right fit for my skill level.

If it weren't for David's steadfast positivity, his kindness and his genuine desire to see me grow and learn as a piano player, I would not still be taking lessons from him three plus years later. Luckily for me, that is not the case and I look forward to having many more lessons with him. I highly recommend David as a teacher!
