Arnell B.

Park Forest, IL

About Arnell

I've always loved to sing from my earliest remembrance along with a love for the piano and a desire to play. I attended Academy of Our Lady - High School where I took four years of piano as well as vocal instruction. I performed with a group called The Madrigals as a 'high soprano' during those years. I further attended Wheaton College, attained a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in music. I was educated musically through Wheaton's Conservatory of Music. I studied piano, voice, theory, music history, music appreciation, and sight singing to name a few. I auditioned, performed, and travel
ed with the Women's Glee Club.
Since then, I served as the worship leader in church setting. I was responsible for music selection, accompaniment, and vocal coaching for our worship team. I've also worked as a facilitator in an after school program. There, I worked with students on an individual as well as group basis. I led a youth choir that traveled and performed for local nursing home residents. I also taught music appreciation and a fitness/movement class incorporating various genres of music.
Throughout the years I've had may opportunities to work with students one-on-one in piano and vocal instruction and performance. Overall, I am very passionate about music. Whether its listening, singing, playing or helping someone develop or grow in their talent, I simply love it!
Now, I'd be honored to work with you. I am comfortable working with beginners to intermediate in both piano and voice, ages 5 and up. As partners, this is a dual effort. I will do my best to find and utilize the most effective ways/methods to coach and assist you in reaching your piano or vocal goals. I will expect you to give your best effort consistently to get there one step at a time.

*** Lesson Details ***
When it comes to lessons, I am a pleasant, approachable person. I enjoy laughter and believe it is a healthy response even when things are difficult.

In piano, I can help you learn the basics of playing such as note recognition, scales, chord formation, ear development and form a foundation that you can build upon progressively. In voice, I can help you develop good breathing, posture, tone, diction and expression. I am excited to work with whatever singing style that interests you most. Opera is my only exception at this point.
I offer training in classical music to use as a foundation for any other genre of music that interests you.

In general, I prefer to use well-balanced methods that incorporate theory along with the mechanics of learning. I believe in using tools, games,or aids that make learning fun, especially for the young beginner. The method used will depend upon the goals and needs of the student.

*** Studio Equipment ***
The In-Studio lessons are taught in the living room with a piano and seating. No pets. Parking in driveway or on street.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I do not travel with any equipment - except books/curriculum as needed.
I expect my student to provide a lesson notebook, and equipment, piano, microphone, amplifier as required.

*** Specialties ***
Genres - Classical, Contemporary Christian

Wow! What an experience.

Arnell is a brilliant instructor.she is motivating, exciting, fun,. creative and very informative.she is a miracle worker. Arnell has done wonders with our 3 children.before they started the piano and singing classes with Arnell, my husband and I realized that it would be very difficult and very challenging for our 8 year old son to learn the piano, seeing that he was diagnosed with a learning disability. to our amazement we were very pleased to see our child, our children reading musical notes and playing the piano fluently in such a very short time,it brought tears to our eyes. Yes my family is very blessed to have Arnell as a piano and singing instructor.

Gwendolyn F.

Harvey, IL

About Gwendolyn

I began playing the piano at the ripe old age of 3 on a toy piano I received for Christmas. My parents began my formal lessons the following Spring with a private teacher who stayed with me until I graduated from High School. I was awarded a four year scholarship to the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago by my church to continue my studies. I added Voice to my studies there. I went on to study Orchestration, Conducting and Theory at I.S.N.U., Drama at C.T.C. upon returning from I.S.N.U and began to develop my Production Company in the early 70's. Since then I have produced numerou
s productions showcasing the talents of young and old while I pursued my Corporate career in Administration. My private students range from 5 years to 87 years although currently I specialize in teaching Seniors how to fill their retirement years with music. After running a Senior Community Center for several years, I realized a lack of artistic outlets for Seniors and began encouraging those who attended my Center to take up an instrument. I have had the joy of teaching many Seniors how to surprise their mates with beautiful music after only 6 months of lessons.

As for the younger generation, it is a proven fact that many children do better in school after learning to play an instrument especially the piano. Fine motor skills, hand and eye coordination and physical strength in hands and arms is also enhanced with the study and practice of the piano more so than any other instrument. Many piano students discover other talents and go on to participate in talent shows, school performances, and church pageants. The fun of being able to sit down and make music for your own enjoyment is almost as much fun as playing for the enjoyment of others. I look forward to continuing to share my love of music and the skills to play for yourself with students from Take lessons.

*** Lesson Details ***
For Adults we discuss their goals and I come up with a plan that we can both agree on to get them there within reason. For children and all beginning students I start with the basics. We learn the keyboard, and the corresponding notes on the music staff. Treble Clef, and Bass Clef become new words in your vocabulary. After you learn your way around the keyboard and the Music Staff we start on the next important part of music, rhythm. I use a variety of percussion instruments and recorded music to teach the various time signatures depending on the age of the student. This makes it more relevant and enjoyable when they can relate to the music they listen to everyday and pick out the time signatures, By now you can read music even if slowly at first, and the addition of rhythm makes it more fun to play. This usually happens within the first six months for children, and the first three months with Adults. Practice is essential , and I recommend that each student practice for 1/2 hour increments up to 2 hours a day depending on their age. I also use scales to help improve dexterity and strengthen the fingers. Students are recorded to track their progress and for me to listen to their lessons and spot problems for correction. I also work with performers in perfecting their stage presence and audition skills. With today's opportunities to become overnight stars with just a video, you want to maximize your chances in any way you can. As a producer of many shows and concerts, I can help make that happen for you.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I will provide the percussion, recorder and recorded material.

Student: Purchase recommended material. Provide your own instrument, and computer or lap top if possible . Internet access not necessary but helpful.

Chris U.

Park Forest, IL

About Chris

If you are interested in Music Production, especially with computers, I am looking for you. If you are looking to take your music to the next level - improvisation and composition, then I want to work with you. If you or your kids have an aptitude for music, I want to explore that with you.

I am a musician, composer, and producer of television and film scores, teaching college courses in music production, composition, and private piano studies. My students range from beginners to piano teachers.

I am serious about music because it is the most fun and rewarding thing that life has to
offer (in my humble opinion...) Let's get started.

*** Lesson Details ***
For beginning students I like to teach the way my beginning piano teacher taught me. She was patient and kind, she listened carefully to the pieces I worked on every week. She was funny and smart, she always had good advice to carry me through to the next lesson, especially when she could tell I hadn't improved as much as I ought to have. I stayed with her for 10 years.

For continuing students, we will figure out where you are and where you want to go. Personally, I like to mix things up a bit to break up the monotony and gain the skills that different styles have to offer. Bach, Brubeck, Beatles, B.B., and Beyonce. And that's just the B's.

For advanced students and students of music production, the sky is the limit. Jazz and Blues improvisation, playing in groups, recording, composing and producing. Whatever your instrument. It's what I do, and it's what I teach.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Church location: gathering room tables couches, television for parents, grand piano in sanctuary (multipurpose room) Audio workstation for digital recording, computers, microphones, recording studio gear.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I expect the student to have a keyboard or piano.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in jazz improvisation, blues, rock and classical piano, and music production. I have 20 years of experience writing television underscores for long form (hour long+) and docudrama productions on A&E Network and most of the local channels in the Chicago area. I have also scored two films.

Miriam-Rose L.

Tinley Park, IL

About Miriam-Rose

Hello! My name is Miriam-Rose, and I have been teaching violin/fiddle to students of all levels and ages for over six years. I was trained classically in the Suzuki method from a very young age, and also have a significant background in traditional music, specifically Scottish fiddle. During my time at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music, I created my own degree with a focus on Scottish music, and also became the third place winner of the 2012 National Scottish Fiddle Championship.

In addition to my background in music, I have a degree in Ballet Performance from the Jacobs Schoo
l of Music. I have been teaching ballet since 2010, and have taught and danced professionally here in the Chicago area since 2013.

Thanks, and I look forward to working with you!

Miriam arrived right on time, prepared and ready to go. She worked with the space I had, and was very patient. As an adult beginner, learning something new can be intimidating, but she made the lesson very enjoyable. I'm looking forward to next week!

Our family cannot speak highly enough of Miriam-Rose and her talent and teaching ability. She is still, by far, our 10-year-old daughter's favorite IU student violin teacher. Miriam-Rose has such a gift for being an incredibly patient and supportive teacher, yet she is firm and affective in her corrections. Our daughter learned so much in just the short time she was instructed by her. She is such a caring, friendly and fun person with lots of energy, and you can tell she loves what she does by the way she teaches. She will be a blessing to any student she instructs. We have two other daughters that also know her from the ballet world and she is known there as well for her talent, teaching and friendliness, which I think speaks volumes for the individual that she is. She is just an all-around wonderful and talented person who also happens to be a very gifted teacher. Students of any age will learn so much from her! We so appreciate what she has done for our family!!

Paul M.

Oak Forest, IL

About Paul

I have my bachelors degree in sacred music, my masters degree in music performance, and my doctorate in worship studies. I am an experienced music teacher with great interpersonal skills and enjoy creating a fun and meaningful learning environment for all ages of students. I teach music theory concepts as I teach music, and I also enjoy sharing the history of music and famous composers. Students should not just learn notes, but they should also learn about the wonderful story of music I have taught private clarinet, flute, saxophone, voice, and piano lessons for many years with great success.
Many of my former students write to me periodically to tell me what they are doing in music. I look forward to working with many more students as we embark on the journey of learning music, pieces, history, and theory together. Students will look back and say they really enjoyed their lessons with me.

I've known Paul for several years and his talent is remarkable! On several occasions I've heard him play the piano and direct a choir while performing before a large crow. I've also heard him play piano and sing Christian Gospel in the comfort of his own living room. I would definitely recommend Paul to family and friends for private lessons of piano, as well as voice performance. His great talent coupled with his candid character makes Paul one of the best instructor's in suburban Chicago.

When we went to Stone Church, Pastor Paul was the leader of music for the church. I was in awe at the way he led the music. His voice, his artful work at the piano...it was such a joy! And now, for the past several years, my daughter has had the privilege to be a student at the piano with Pastor Paul. He is very patient, and very adept at the way he teaches...encourages my daughter to play. We (my wife and I) are very lucky...actually blessed to have such a talented Godly man teach our daughter.

Paul makes our chorus look and sound professional. He is without a doubt the
best director our community chorus has ever had and I have been in the chorus since 1989 and have been singing in various groups since I was in sixth grade.
He gives us expert technical direction and he makes you feel at ease when he
gives you suggestions on how we can perfect our performance. He took the time
out of his busy schedule to help me personally perfect a solo I performed for our
recent concert. I look forward to future concerts under his expert directions.
