About Jesse

My Background

I've been playing with classical ensembles and rock bands since 2001. Even though I started on classical trombone and rock guitar, I have come to expand my repertoire to a variety of instruments and genres. D
uring my time in college I performed with the University choir, orchestra, and band. I also have organized, wrote/arranged for, and performed with a variety of bands in my home state of New Mexico, as well as Japan, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Since 2006 I have been an active teacher. This profession has taken me everywhere from working with classical guitar classes in New Mexico high schools to Elementary students in Japan to a variety of private students of various musical instruments and genres everywhere I've been. Since relocating to the Bay Area in 2010, I've had the pleasure of working with lots of great students from kids to adults with a wide range of ambitions. Since 2012 I've been running my own full time studio along.

Philosophy of Learning

Lessons are generally designed to work towards giving students the tools to accomplish their goals and become increasingly independent over time. While all students will study similar fundamentals regarding technique, theory, and performance, every lesson is as different as every person. What kind of music do you want to make? I'll tell you what you need to do to get there, and help you take the steps to achieve your aspirations.

I also love to help students put together a song, record, and produce it for them so that they can have a recording to share with their friends and family.

I also hold events for my students. (Check out our pictures and videos below!)
Younger students have the "Young Musicians Showcase" every few months where individual students and band classes have a chance to perform and celebrate their accomplishments with friends and family.
Adult students occasionally have events where they get a chance to get together and play music as well.

Aside from in-studio lessons, students also have the option to sign up for online lessons via Skype.
(*Online lessons offered during different times than in-studio lessons.)

*Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, I'm not currently accepting students for bi-weekly lessons. I can do regular weekly lessons, or occasional drop-in lessons, but bi-weekly appointments make it really hard for me to give the best scheduled times to my existing weekly students. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

My studio is equipped with:

*Multiple Music Stands

*P.A. System

*Vocal and instrument microphones

*Guitars, Basses, and a Banjo

*Two guitar amps and a bass amp

*Various percussion including a fully equipped acoustic drum set

*A Roland V-Drums electronic drum set

*An electric piano console

*A MicroKorg Synthesizer

*A Tuba, Trombone, Cornet, and Flute

*An extensive physical and virtual music library

*A recording system that students are not only welcome to use but encouraged to

*HD Webcam and condenser microphone for high fidelity online lessons via Skype

Jesse is a great teacher. He is very patient and caring. He taught my daughter at her pace. He tried using different methods to help my daughter to comprehend quicker and easier. I came there 10 minutes early. He started the lesson immediately. Also at the end of the lesson, he allowed parent time to discuss any concern I might have. We like Jesse a lot!

Jesse is highly skilled and it was evident with every instrument I ever saw him play.

What sets him apart from a lot of other music teachers I have had is that he focuses on what YOU want to learn. He takes in account your current skill level and incorporates the necessary practice regiments that will help you improve while still keeping it fun and engaging.

It is also awesome that he provides band lessons. Learning to play with others is an integral part of learning and enjoying music. I wish such a thing was available back when I was first learning how to play an instrument.

My daughter started taking piano lessons with DeAnna about a month ago. She has been really enjoying DeAnna's lessons and I can already hear that she has improved quite a bit. DeAnna is warm, caring, and patient. Her lessons have a good balance of technique and musicality. She gives very specific practice plans every week that are easy to follow. We are so glad we found her!

As a complete beginner, I really had no idea how to begin with piano. I'm so glad that I found DeAnna and have her as my piano teacher! She's really patient, knowledgeable and always makes sure the lesson is well organized. Before the first lesson, she sent me a list that needs to be prepared before first lesson. I could feel she must be very experienced at that time, and it turned out to be true in the following lessons!

She's a really good teacher. Not only her piano teaching skill is perfect, but also she treats her student very kindly and always smiles and encourages me. I appreciate her a lot, cuz she helps me to keep my learning enthusiasm, which makes me feel I can finally become an amateur pianist! Haha

Thank her a lot!

Note: Home studio not open in September.

Education:

I received my Bachelor’s degree from Tunghai University in Taichung, Taiwan in 2010, and continued on to a Masters degree under Dr. Steven Spooner as a scholarship student at the University of Kansas. I am currently pursuing a D.M.A degree at Stony Brook University, where I study with Gilbert Kalish.

Personality and Teaching Style:

Patient, dedicated and caring. Providing a comfortable and stressless experience is my principle. My goal is to cultivate every student's interest in music and ability to learn music as their own teacher. I apply musical games and online musicianship development activities in teaching. It's FUN!

Classical Piano · In studio
My son started taking lessons with Ms. Sharon about four months ago. I was searching for a piano teacher with classical background because I know that classical background is very important in basics of piano. I was looking for a serious teacher who was able to keep my son focused and learn well because I want piano to be a big part of my son. Sharon not only can keep my son, who is only 7, focused for 60 minutes, but he is truly enjoying his time with her. He loves taking lessons with her, enjoys practicing at home, and eager to go back to the lesson every week. I thought, at first, 60 minute lesson may be too long for 7 year old boy. However, Sharon keeps him interested, and he is learning basics of piano very well. I searched for a good piano teacher for almost a year, and I am very glad that we met Ms. Sharon.
