Heather L.

Saint Augustine, FL

About Heather

More important than my conservatory education and my experience as an educator and a performer is my passion for teaching music and acting and my undying belief that anyone can learn to be a musician and an actor. I'm currently available to teach lessons in my own St. Augustine home studio, and online around the globe.

I'm a graduate of Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a winner of its merit scholarship.
After performing with the New York and Royal Philharmonics, the New Jersey and Virginia Symphonies, the American Boy Choir and the internationally renowned opera star
, Andrea Bocelli, studying opera and piano at Westminster Choir College and performance art and improvisational acting at East Carolina University in North Carolina, and appearing in shows and pageants across the east coast, I found my life's work in 2003 when I began teaching music.

I've successfully taught hundreds of different students since 2003, from 5-year-olds with special needs, to middle-aged professional opera singers, from a linguistics professor in Saudi Arabia, to a 65-year-old doctor of music. I've created and led a workshop about singing called, "The Whole Body Singer". I've written dozens of articles about music and music education for the blog at TakeLessons.com.

My extensive knowledge of the voice has encouraged and empowered hundreds of singers and prepared many of them to win competitions, pageants and auditions, as well as roles in operas and musicals.
Having both taught myself piano and received formal training at a conservatory has prepared me to teach almost anyone how to play.
The intensive training and education that I received at Westminster Choir College in songwriting, music theory and sight reading has benefited my students at every level.
My current work as singer and keyboardist in the acoustic rock duo, Timberwood, has strengthened my knowledge of a broad range of styles and genres. I have a strong commitment to continuing my education. That's why I recently (2014) studied songwriting online with the Berklee College of Music in Boston.

In the lessons that I teach, I'm flexible, positive and encouraging. While I want my students to have fun and love music, not dread it, I expect hard work and persistence. I am caring, patient, nurturing, and compassionate. In piano lessons, I usually allow the student to choose a piece with which to warm up and then move on to technique and repertoire. In voice lessons, I usually warm up the singer and discuss technique and sight singing before focusing on song choices. Joan Frey Boytim wrote a book for voice that I like to use, and I like the Estelle Liebling exercises for the more advanced singer. Hanon exercises are a big part of my piano curriculum, and I enjoy the Bastien and Alfred books for young and old. I have used completely random songs pulled out of a piano bench and a karaoke CD for kids. I will use almost anything I can get my hands on if it means effectively teaching music.
Acting lessons consist of exercises and games that apply learned concepts, and monologue and audition coaching. Parents are always welcome to observe lessons quietly.

*** Travel Equipment ***
I provide an acoustic guitar to bring to voice lessons. I expect my piano students to have a piano, an organ or a keyboard.

***Home Studio Equipment***
In my home studio, my students will have access to an acoustic guitar, an electronic keyboard, an acoustic piano and PC audio recording.

*** Specialties ***
I specialize in teaching classical, pop and musical theater singing, classical and pop/rock/chordal style piano, and sightreading, including solfege syllables. I enjoy using Estelle Liebling as my voice method and Hanon for piano technique. I have coursework in jazz and pop theory and songwriting from Westminster Choir College. Teaching special needs individuals is also one of my specialties, and one that I highly enjoy. I have coursework in Meisner technique and experience in both theatre acting and musical theatre.

Gregg E.

Daytona Beach, FL

About Gregg

My name is Gregg and I was born in Daytona Beach and have been a life long resident of this area. Like most drummers my interest in drums began when I was a small child. I would collect empty coffee cans and gather a couple sticks from the yard and "make a joyful noise". When I was in elementary school I joined the school band and learned to play the snare drum and other percussion instruments. At the age of 14, I joined my first "garage band". Our first gig was at "Skateland". We received $5.00 per man. Since then I have been in countless numbers of bands and played at many different venues
in and around the Daytona area. In 2005 I started the Daytona chapter of "Drummers for Jesus" of which I am still the chapter leader.
I have been playing drums for over 45 years and my passion is helping others learn to play. Learning to play a musical instrument has a positive affect on every aspect of your life. You're never too old to get started so don't let age stop you.

*** Lesson Details ***
I am currently enrolling new students of all ages and skill levels at very affordable rates. I am a registered Drumsense instructor. Drumsense is an internationally acclaimed teaching program that uses a proven method based on books and playalong material by contemporary players and teachers.

From day one you will be playing on the drum set. Many students are able to play several basic beats to music on the first day. We will cover many genres of music over time. You will learn all 40 drum rudiments and how to apply them to the drum kit,as well. Every one of my students have been excited after their first lesson when they see what they are able to accomplish when they are given proper direction.

I have a fully equipped studio with multiple drum sets to accomodate all ages. My studio is equipped with a sound system for playalong music and other valuable teaching tools that I use that make the learning experience fun.
If you are interested in getting started on a fun and exciting adventure of learning to play the drums, contact me today and make an appointment.
If you have an ipod I can record your entire lesson on it at no extra charge. I provide a hard cover notebook to keep lesson notes in and play along music on CD's to practice to at home.
The program I teach is very comprehensive and structured which makes learning to play the drums easy and fun for all ages.
I look forward to hearing from you!

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in music store with 3 drums sets: 2 for adults and 1 for children.

*** Specialties ***
All genres of music are included in program.

Great instructor!

My son who is 6 started lessons with Gregg 3 months ago. I cannot believe how much he has learned in that short time. Gregg is very encouraging and is able to keep his students on track and focused while still having a great time. I would highly recommend Gregg for any age student as he is very knowledgable, patient and kind!

Mr. Eckerson is wonderful!!

My son started taking lessons with Mr. Eckerson over the summer of 2012 in preparation for 6th grade band. His experience with his band teacher was, for lack of better words, horrible. Mr. Eckerson made sure that Jake's confidence wasn't shattered and that his desire to learn was still intact. Jake is still getting lessons and is loving learning his craft. Without Mr. Eckerson Jake most definitely would have given up on even wanting to learn. I see his confidence getting stronger everyday and I don't even mind the noise coming from his bedroom!

Wonderful Teacher

My son has been taking drum lesson from Gregg for 4.5 years. Not only is my son the 1st chair percussion in his Middle School Advanced Band and also the Jazz Band but he made The 2013 Middle School Volusia All County Band. None of this would have been possible without taking lessons from Gregg!

Angelia D.

Palm Coast, FL

About Angelia

At an early age my parents discovered that piano was a great way for me to learn and focus. Since my first encounter with a private lesson I have stayed in lessons with different teachers wherever I moved to. In college I was in the music program at Rollins College. I emerged from Rollins with a wealth of knowledge and a hunger to pass the information on to other so that they can enjoy music in every aspect of their life.

The ability to give each student and each song a unique individualistic approach that gives life a song, a lyric, or a beat that will live on in them forever. No matter wh
at you want to learn, music is a great place to start.
