My Philosophy
I am also known as a singer/songwriter & recording artist but it’s my work passing the torch to actors and music artists that gives me the joy I have carried with me during my long career in show business; If an artist believes they have something to say creatively I’ll work with them to discover the way to do it and they will do it well. So well, in fact, that they are going to be able create and perform in whatever capacity they visualize. It is 100% because they find the way to discover what makes them thrive and to maintain a kind of emotional equilibrium that lives inside of them.
I solidify technique, the system, and we all know you gotta have a system. But actors also have to be able to support that system and that takes the ability to practice discipline and a work ethic and it takes a commitment to self care and most importantly the insistence of creating a habit of self love.
So, look, I don’t want to go all California on you, or all showbiz for that matter, but if someone is an artist, their nerve endings are probably longer than their appendages and it’s my job as their coach to look out for them...to make sure they have the ability to understand how much they deserve to be on the planet because actors are serving this planet and that is work. Art is work. And it's necessary. It’s how I do it for myself as an artist. And it’s how I practice with others. So that’s what I do. And I’m lucky I can.

Carol W.

Santa Monica, CA

Learn to sing with ease and be audition ready and confident!

About Carol

I have taught voice for over twenty years. I studied music at University of California, Santa Barbara, where I received my B.A. I currently work as a professional singer for various local opera companies, music theater groups, churches and temples. I am principal soprano for Opera A La Carte and have also soloed with Repertory Opera Company, Redlands Bowl Festival, Laguna Beach Chorale and Celestial Opera Company. I have worked extensively in Los Angeles schools performing musical assemblies for students in elementary and middle grades through Southland Opera, LA Opera and Guild Opera of South
ern California. My teaching experience includes private voice lessons and master classes at Idyllwild School for the Arts.

*** Lesson Details ***
I emphasize breathing techniques to free up the voice to expand your range and ease of singing. In the lesson, we start with simple warm ups and vocalizes and then apply techniques to the songs you want to sing. I realize each student is different and I customize the lesson to the student's particular needs. I specialize in classical and music theater, however the basics of singing apply to all styles of music. In addition to working on breathing and technique for singing, we'll also focus on interpretation of the songs you are working on as well as how to overcome performance nervousness. Most students find that they are able to sing with more freedom, less tension and will have more confidence as they progress.

I also teach beginning piano, using the John W. Schaum series.

*** Studio Equipment ***
Lessons in the main room, upright piano

*** Travel Equipment ***
They need to provide a piano or keyboard if I am going to their home.
I have a piano in my home.

*** Specialties ***
I work on using the breath as a fundamental technique for singing. Singing should never hurt. I use a lot of imagery to achieve freedom in singing.

My daughter has grown so much with developing her range, control, and breathing. She has not only grown as a singer who loves her passion, but also as a young student that has been very mature and impressive with her stage presence. Ms. Michelle has challenge her at every level and still allowed her to be expressive. My daughter at age 12 has performed at events and people comment on her talent and controlled ability. We contribute her growth and success to Ms. Michelle.

Emily W.

Los Angeles, CA

Although I teach the same fundamental technique for all kinds of singing, I am well versed in the unique stylistic needs of Broadway singing. I use simple exercises to teach my students how to expand their range, build strong breath control, and learn how to belt in a healthy way. I also specialize in acting for singers. When working on musical theatre, I challenge my students to study and identify with their character in order to produce stronger singing and a stronger performance.

About Emily

I teach to help people find their inner rock star. Everyone can sing! But for many people, fear is an obstacle. I know firsthand how much courage it takes to stand up and sing. I teach to help others experience the same healing I have experienced through music. My approach to singing is informed by my education and years of performance experience. I teach my students how to embrace their fears and move through them to the other side. I also facilitate a supportive student/teacher relationship based upon mutual respect and kindness. Most importantly, I encourage my students to trust themselves
and their innate musical gifts. This develops their self confidence and ultimately leads them to their purest, most authentic sound.

I lived and breathed music and singing throughout my childhood, and I continue to today. I have over fifteen years of classical music training and performance experience. I attended California State University Northridge where I studied classical voice, art song, and opera performance. Since attaining my Bachelor of Music in Vocal Arts I have performed opera and musical theatre professionally across Los Angeles. I have since left opera performance to focus on my true musical passions: pop, R&B, jazz, musical theatre, and teaching.

**Lesson Details**
I tailor my teaching to each student's needs and desires. I teach all levels of singing, child to adult, beginner to advanced. If you are a beginner, I will quickly help you understand and access your instrument. If you are a more experienced singer, I will help you identify your opportunities for growth and we start from there. I focus on releasing tension and building a strong core foundation. You will learn how to develop consistent breath control, expand your range, and grow your voice into a powerful and beautiful sound!

**Studio Equipment**
Piano
Acoustic guitar
Music stand
ZoomH2 microphone and recording device
Musical theater/classical singer library

**Specialties**
I teach the same technique for all styles of singing - pop, R&B, jazz, gospel, musical theatre, and classical. I help my students make minor changes for each style, but the core foundational technique remains the same. I specialize in breath support, vocal chord closure, range expansion, vocal register negotiation, body alignment, relieving tension, healthy belting, emotional support, and acting for singers.
