Using both a phonics and whole word approach, I emphasize letter sound and high-frequency word recognition. Some students hesitate to read out loud out of fear of making mistakes. However, by creating a comfortable atmosphere, I enable a student to learn easily in a supportive environment as we explore interesting passages of all types, including creative fictional, history-based, science-based, and contemporary.
