I've been teaching math for 7 years and my students have gone on to develop a stronger connection with the subject after their time with me. Within the first few sessions, you'll be able to fully understand the concept you're working on and as time goes on you'll develop skills for problem solving that make all topic easier. I specialize in 5th through 12th grade, and am familiar with several curriculums and textbooks, including Illustrative Math, CME, Pearson EnVision, and Bridges. I love working with students of all ages and experience levels and I can't wait to meet you!
MUSIC LESSONS: Whether I am playing salsa, solo classical piano, in a jazz ensemble, or a concert band, I am ALWAYS having fun doing what I love, and I want you to have the same experience. After moving to Philadelphia ten years ago to study at Temple University, where I received my Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance, I have had many great opportunities to play all types of music with all types of people. While my passions are in jazz music, composing, and arranging, my varied experience helps me pass on the fundamentals necessary to becoming a great musician while also adapting to your goals, needs, and musical preferences.
*** Lesson Details *** I aim for students to leave each lesson eager to practice and explore, and to come back with questions and stories of their progress. To that end, I work hard to tailor lessons to every
individuals interests and goals. Sometimes this means arranging, transcribing a recording, or even composing something new for my students. Additionally, in each lesson, I balance technical skills, ear training, and music theory to assure that each student walks away a complete musician, all structured around your musical goals.
*** Travel Equipment *** The student must provide their own instrument and assigned method books. I will provide a music stand if necessary, and other useful instructional tools (metronome, tuner, etc.)
*** Home Studio *** I offer lessons in my home located within walking distance of Broad Street in South Philadelphia, near the Tasker-Morris subway stop. I am equipped with a well-playing upright piano and plenty of space for musical activities. There is ample street parking in the area during the afternoon and early evening, and our living room is available to parents while students take their lesson. Students who travel to me for lessons gain all the benefits of performing on a piano, rather than an electric keyboard, and have access to many more resources that I am able to offer from my home, such as recordings and method books.
*** Specialties *** I specialize teaching "late starters" (teens and adults new to piano) fundamentals in music in a fun and exciting way that will have you playing the music you love quickly.
For brass instruments, I am able to help brand new beginners build up their sound and facility through simple exercises that will have them astounded by their progress.
MATH: I use my years of classroom teaching and Master's degree in math education as experience to help guide you to the success you are seeking. I am able to tailor sessions to your specific needs with a few key points in mind:
- helping you catch-up, while also preparing you for what is ahead - balancing practice with conceptual knowledge and application - using research-based techniques to maximize your learning
I am a patient teacher, and well-equipped to explain tough topics in multiple ways. I like to use visuals and objects with simple examples to help my students really understand a concept before we try harder material. Total understanding and confidence is my goal for you.
My personal interests in mathematics are problem solving, puzzles, and combinatorics (think "How many different outfits can I make with all the clothes in my closet?"). If you're looking for an addicting puzzle to try, I suggest KenKen to all my students.
For the last 20 years, I have been a tutor of pre-algebra and math for grades 5-7. I tutored these subjects at Score Education Center- an after-school tutoring enter for students, ages 5-15.
I combine my two decades of experience as a professional tutor and corporate writer with my own personal understanding of the learning struggles faced by students to create unique methods for every student to learn, regardless of the subject. I use creative innovations to make learning fun and enjoyable for my students. My students quickly see how much I care for their progress and success. Many have chosen to retain me as their tutor for more than a year.
I had the opportunity to work with Douglas a number of times during my tenure as a part-time instructor at SCORE Educational Center. What I noticed about him was that he related very well to the children he worked with - he was a very enthusiastic tutor of English and math! He was most generous with the "high fives" and praise, and he also knew how to get students back on track if their focus strayed. Also, I saw him work very well with the parents; he always took the time to patiently explain lesson plans and students' progress between sessions. I have known Douglas personally for many years. He was the one who encouraged me to work at SCORE Educational Center given my background in Education - I thank him for that because I enjoyed my time there very much while I was able to stay (unfortunately, I had to leave that position for a full-time job elsewhere). SCORE Educational Center is no longer in existence. Douglas currently works as an independent tutor, and given how long I've seen clients stick with him, I have no doubt that they are enjoying the same level of attention and enthusiasm he provided at SCORE. When he speaks about the progress of independent clients and how they respond to him, it is with enthusiasm and a glowing smile. If you are looking for a tutor that is intelligent, dedicated, enthusiastic, and simply great with kids and parents, then Douglas is your man.
I taught Math at CPS and in the North Suburbs of Chicago. I believe, my strengths are patience and the ability to explain material in a clear, simple way.
I taught Algebra I and Geometry at Clemente High School in Chicago and AP Statistics, Geometry and Trigonometry at Libertyville High School Summer Program. I am currently teaching 7th and 8th grade Math at a private school in Buffalo Grove, IL. I love tutoring students of any age, from elementary to high school. It makes me happy when I see the progress they are making. My Master's Degree is in Curriculum and Instructions from Loyola University, Chicago. At one point in my life I wanted to be a pharmacist, but when I became a teacher, I realized that that is what I was meant to be. I love helping people. I see how much difference it makes in a student's life when he or she starts to feel confident in Math class, starts to get high scores, starts to dream big. Math opens the doors to a better future, to a better career, to a higher s
elf-esteem. I am grateful for the opportunity to help to make it happen.
My daughter was doing well but short of excelling in math. I sent her to Julia for that extra push and confidence that she needed. She really helped her have confidence and made her thorough with her concepts. She been doing really great ever since!

Julia is a highly knowledgeable, professional and personable teacher. My son has been tutored by her since the age of 4 and is now 13. His MAP and PARCC scores are off the charts and he just received his placements for Stevenson High School with the recommendations for the highest math classes offered to incoming freshmen. Julia taught him to love and be passionate about mathematics. Her primary goal is to make sure that the students learn in a stress-free environment and with that strategy she is able to accomplish brilliant results. I recommend Julia highly. She is very approachable and patient, loves children and loves what she does.
Math is very easy subject but what matters is the way it is taught . I love to teach Math Problems to the children. Teaching is my passion ...

Ashwini assumed that I was married upon meeting her, and asked me when I was getting married as soon as she learned I wasn't married. She also asked where I was getting married, even though at the time I wasn't engaged. Even when I made it apparent I wasn't engaged, she continued to refer to my boyfriend as my fiance.
She would send me political things going on in India, even though I have no interest, and it has nothing to do with the lessons I was taking from her. She asked me if my boyfriend was voting, and many personal things that shouldn't be asked of a student learning Hindi.
She often moved my scheduled time around without asking, which meant that I needed to move my schedule around in order to attend her sessions.
As a teacher she was pretty good, but some things disappointed me there too. For instance, I made a sentence in which a jeweler was a woman, and she stated that can't be correct, because there are no woman jewelers. I'm a woman engineer, and it's really sad to see such a sexist thing. Even when I attempted to ask about how you would say something about a woman jeweler, she said it was impossible. Later she said nurses could only be woman.
From experience, math can transition easily from the most frustrating to the most rewarding subjects. It is always a joyful experience for me to see students put 2 and 2 together and arrive at that glorious correct answer.* I have experience working with elementary and high school students, both privately and in volunteer settings.
Whether the focus is on polynomials, trig identities, calculus, or linear algebra, I am here to help. My process is to break everything down and ask the students questions in order to guide them to the solution. I will do everything I can to help facilitate deep understanding and earning that next A!
My ACT score was 35, with a sub-score of 36 on math. I took Calculus my sophomore year and earned a 5 on the AP Calc - BC test.
Fun fact: In addition to being a math major at the University of Rochester, I'm also studying the Double Bass at Eastman School of Music. If you or your student have any interest in music lessons for upright bass or bass guitar, I ...
Here's a bit about myself:
Since 2016, I've been teaching math to high school and elementary students. I've always loved it. With teaching, I feel that I've grown more patient and more thoughtful in my general life. I recommend that anyone with the means try their hand at teaching. It is a particularly rewarding thing in and of itself.
The summer of 2016, I wrote the music, conducted, and acted as musical director for a full-scale musical entitled Get Hooked: A Pirate Musical. Currently, I'm working on a second full-length project, entitled Nuclear Love, that is set to be produced and performed in the spring of 2020.
I also have experience doing rock and jazz gigs on my electric bass. If you or student is also interested in learning these styles, I'd be more than happy to oblige!
My favorite books are Zen and the Art of Motorc
ycle Maintenance, The Giver, Ishmael, 1984, The Chess Garden, Invisible Man, Labyrinths, and Life of Pi.
My favorite quote is "infinity and beyond." Granted, there is no such thing as 'beyond' - unless you're referring to the power set of infinity. Honestly, I just love infinity. I could talk about the infinite hotel and fractals forever (pun noted and kept).
I've been taking French classes for about 5 years now. If you're interested in having a charming conversation in slightly broken French, je suis ton mec!
There are a few things more inspiring to than helping a student triumphantly arrive at a solution. Or watching them nail a big shift that was giving them trouble the week before. Learning anything comes with struggle, with difficulty, and I've certainly had my share of practice frustration. It's important to understand that such an experience is part of the process. I have no doubt that with the right ethic, the right teacher, and a desire to learn, anything can be achieved.
I have an Engineering Background with a strong base in Mathematics. I teach every level Maths and design the course as per the student's requirement. Focus on earning GOOD GRADES and understanding the real Maths.

"Alex has been a very helpful tutor. He is very patient and good at explaining confusing concepts. Would absolutely recommend!"
"My 13 yr old son had attented the tutoring for Mathematics and Physics. Each session was supportive and completing the actual school standard. My son alwa
ys came home with a great sense of satisfaction. His scores showed a remarkable step up due to the tutor's impeccable coaching."
"I am in my second year of homeschooling and had prayed specifically for a male teacher to come alongside us and assist in our homeschooling adventure. Al
though my son, who is six, is not having any difficulties at the moment, homeschooling is still new to me and I was hoping I could find someone who would keep us accountable and help fill in any gaps in my son's schooling. We have found Maurice to be just what we needed. He is engaging and encouraging and has been helpful in sharing strategies and teaching techniques that foster comprehensive learning and not merely memorization."
"Janis first tutored our son in math. I was impressed with her admission to me that our son was smart enough to do the math on his own, but needed only mot
ivation. She allowed us to be the ones to decide if we wanted to spend the money on tutoring after having this knowledge. We did continue, and she was really great with him. His grade was raised before we knew it! We then found out she gave guitar lessons and hired her to teach my daughter. She was incredibly patient and made the lessons fun. Both my son and daughter developed a strong relationship with her. I highly recommend her to teach anything!"
"I am a sixth grade student, and Julia has been a very good math tutor to me for about 3 years already, and I plan to keep going to her for a while. I am s
eeing lots of improvement at school, and my MAP and other test scores have increased greatly since the start of Julia helping me out this year. Two things that are great about Julia as a tutor, are that she never, ever yells or gets frustrated when I don’t understand how to do something. Also, she takes as much time as needed to explain a hard problem to me, and she does that very clearly, until I fully understand how to do that problem. My overall opinion of Julia is that she is one of the best math tutors out there, because I had to go through many other tutors to find a good one, and Julia is the best."
"My kid is homeschool and Milka has been doing a great job at teaching him some of the subjects he needs to learn (such as biology, chemistry and math)! sh

"AMAZING! If I were to choose 1 word to describe Maurice's skill, talent & patience it would be AMAZING! My son has struggled academically for years & we h
ave tried many other tutors with no improvement. Maurice came into our lives & my son went from D's & F's to consistently maintaining A's, B's & C's. We couldn't be happier & more proud of all the progress made. Maurice is always welcome in our home & with 2 younger daughters in grade school he'll be part of the family by the time were done with tutoring!"
