About Farobag
Music Director of the Chicago Philharmonia Orchestra since 1985, Farobag has also served as Managing Director of the University of Chicago Performing Artists Series from 1989 through 2002 and principal conductor of its resident professional ensembles. A skilled interpreter of Baroque literature as well, Farobag continues in his capacity as Artistic Advisor to the Baroque Masterplayers, a virtuoso ensemble that concatenates period performance techniques with modern instruments thus creating a unique voice within the realm of 17th and 18th- century repertoire.

A double graduate of the Eastman School of Music and the University of Rochester, Farobag studied under Anastasia Jempelis, a pioneer of Suzuki violin pedagogy in the United States. In addition to the Suzuki curriculum, he is also associated with the Royal Conservatory Music Devel
opment Program that sets a national standard of musical achievement in various fields.

Befitting his penchant for encouraging artistic interest amongst younger members of his community, Farobag is also the principal conductor of the Zoroastrian Symphony Orchestra that offers a unique mixture of young and seasoned professionals sitting side-by-side in a strictly professional setting. Since the year 2000, the ZSO has staged highly successful performances at various venues in Houston, Chicago, and Toronto. A New Year's eve performance in Los Angeles is scheduled for 2014.

Having also taken graduate-level coursework in educational psychology, mathematics, and philosophy at the University of Chicago, Farobag offers tutelage in various areas of elementary and secondary education as well as in SAT, ACT and GRE test preparation.

Additionally, as a certified Reiki Master, therapeutic and/or educational sessions are also extended to those who may be inclined to alternative healing techniques.

*** Lesson Details ***
Sheer technique is necessary but insufficient to play an instrument well. Aural skills, that include the study of functional tonality and voice-leading are important factors that impart musicality. This is of great import if the prospective musician wants the audience to truly enjoy his or her performance !

Whether it be the 3 Rs or preparation in the performing arts, a remarkable instructor must go well beyond the subject matter at hand and help imbue the student with a spirit of wonder that, in due time, will foster enthusiasm necessary for excellence.

A child emulates and learns to communicate in his or her mother-tongue through a supporting and nurturing environment. Likewise, a student needs to be sufficiently motivated to embrace learning in a familiar supportive manner.

I've been playing a few instruments for 23 years, and finally decided to get into violin. Farobag made me realize that I know next to nothing about the violin, and there is so much to learn. I played only a few notes in my first lesson, but his instruction was worth every penny. I am very excited for the next lesson and look forward to learning everything I can from Farobag. Highly recommended.

Mr. Cooper is an experienced teacher. He teaches piano, violin & vocal from basic to advance level. My son has been taking piano classes from him for the past 3+ years. He loves to go to Mr. Cooper's classes. The foremost quality in Mr. Cooper is that he seeks perfection and tries to imbibe the same in his students. He encourages all his students to perform their best and is extremely patient in dealing with his students. Mr. Cooper lets me sit in my son's lessons and I got my 101 on classical music with these sessons. I can appreciate what my son plays and also now able to appreciate classical music in general.
Mr. Cooper encourages all his students to participate in IMA annual contests and puts a lot of effort in preparing his students for the same.

I have been playing piano since I was 6 years old. It is a wonderful way to make up songs and recognize patterns in music. Under my direction, a student of the piano can expect to learn to play and contextualize complex chord shapes, to read melodies and charts, and to play along to their favorite music using music theory and skills (the ability to play by ear) and improvise. I am particularly good at explaining musical modes, and putting that knowledge to use in a way that jump starts a new students ability to play with various types of popular music more quickly than your average suzuki-method teacher.

My musical background is uniquely rooted in classical training and popular music (non-classical) experience. I have professionally played toured and/or taught on a variety of instuments including Bass, Drums, Guitar, Piano, Ukulele and Voice for the past 8 years all over the world. My main focus has been bass guitar, on which I've played in over a dozen local bands. In addition, I received my Music BA from CU Boulder in 2014. My classical training in combination with my experience as a song writer, multi-instrumentalist and band leader gives me a uniquely well-rounded teaching style. I aim to teach and inspire students to use music as a joyful platform for learning important skills such as diligent practice, cognitive flexibilty, and creative expression.

Growing up and playing in Hawaii and Colorado, I have had the opportunity to l
earn from prolific, passionate and talented musicians from all over the globe. I can provide most necessary lesson materials, however it is necessary that students have their own instruments on which to play and practice. I can teach in my home studio in South Boulder if that is your preference. The studio has keyboard, bass, drums, guitar, ukulele and vocal microphones. ***Some additional background to my experience***
I grew up "noodling". I avoided the difficult task of learning to read proficiently until I was almost 18. Looking back I realize that for me, music was a way to relax and pause internal dialogue. I would create music, especially on the piano that was entirely my own, and based solely on intuition. I got by in piano lessons and choir for so many years as kid by relying on an intuitive ability to aurally recall music and "play by ear". Eventually, I was turned on to the necessity of being able to read when I was accepted into a nationally competitive choral program at Fairview High School under the direction of Ron Revier. Shortly after that, I picked up a guitar and discovered music theory.
Realizing that reading, and theory were inherently different things allowed by to accelerate quickly at music theory which opened so many doors for me creatively. Suddenly, my ability to improvise in context and write my own songs was born.
I realized that every note I sang or played was part of an essential structure, whether or not I was paying attention to it. This is why I particularly enjoy teaching aural skills, sight reading, and music theory in conjunction with whatever repertoire or skillset a student wants to learn. These things facilitate becoming one's own teacher which is the most important thing I can pass on to a student. If you can contextualize everything you hear, you can more easily pursue whatever type of music inspires you.
Understanding theoretical things like musical modes creates a structure around the seemingly elusive nature of musical improvisation. It comes naturally to some, but is stubbornly avoided by others. I assure you, anyone can do it with some guidance. Through the years, I have developed a handful of shortcuts and tools that allow elementary musicians to start creating their own music that is not necessarily oriented in genre or style, but can be applied to all of them. I look forward to sharing my passion with new students!

Julian has spent lots and lots of fun time with his nephews and nieces (age 13-2), playing music with and teaching--ukulele, piano, guitar and drums over the last few years, and as a result they all have some great skills, confidence, and excitement about music. He's kind and very tuned in to where his students are.
I'm his Dad so I've seen how rewarding it can be for his students. He's also given me a basic set of skills on the guitar. It goes without saying, I recommend him highly!!

As a beginning bass player with no previous experience, my daughter was relunctant to start online lessons. Julian quickly established a rapport with her. She now looks forward to her weekly lesson and even practices daily (a miracle) after school. Julian has taken the time to build a good relationship with my shy daughter, and she thinks he is wonderful. I am impressed by his willingness to not just teach the mechanics of playing, but to build a relationship with his students. I would recommend this dedicated and patient teacher.

His Lecture Recital Document, A Performer’s Analysis of Selected Jazz Works for Saxophone Quartet, featured an interview with Bob Mintzer. Carl was a member of KU Jazz Ensemble I, KU Saxophone Quartet I, and KU's Helianthus New Music Ensemble. As a member of KU's Jazz Ensemble 1, Carl has performed with Dave Douglas, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alex Sipiagin, Steve Owen, Gary Foster, Steve Houghton, Clint Ashlock, David von Kampen, Peter Epstein, Jeff Miley, James Miley, Roger Shew, and Brian Hamada, Brandon Draper, Rich Wheeler, Beau Bledsoe, Jeff Harshbarger, and Matt Otto. In July 2014, Carl went on a European tour with KU Jazz Ensemble I featuring Steve Leisring and Deborah Brown. Together, they performed at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, the Vienne Jazz Festival in France, and performed in several cities in Germany. Recordings by this band resulted in KU winning the DownBeat Student Award (Graduate College Large Jazz Ensemble Division) in 2015.

While at OSU, Carl was a GTA for the saxophone studio and music theory programs. His responsibilities included Music Theory I-IV tutoring and grading, sight-singing grading, piano labs, classical and jazz saxophone lessons, saxophone quartet coaching, saxophone studio Webmaster, and saxophone studio class. Carl was a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble 1. He had a regularly performing jazz trio and played in OSU's X2End saxophone quartet. The X2End quartet performed locally at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium in Washington D.C., at the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and has won the state and division rounds of the 2010-2011 MTNA Chamber Music Competition. The X2End quartet went on to win the 3rd place prize at the national final round of the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. They also were the Division II Chamber Ensemble winners at the 2011 Hubbard Music Competition where they were awarded the 2nd place prize in the overall finals. Carl's final degree paper at OSU was a study of composer/performer collaboration. He traveled to Texas, Michigan, and Ohio to interview saxophonists and composers including David Dees, Peter Fischer, John Sampen,Marilyn Shrude, Joe Lulloff, and Charles Ruggiero. He has presented his lecture at the 2011 Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, the 2011 NASA Region IV Conference, and the 2012 OSU Single Reed Summit. As a member of OSU's Jazz Ensemble 1, he has performed with Bob Sheppard, Conrad Herwig, Wayne Bergeron, and Andy Martin.

While at SWOSU, Carl performed as a member of the marching band, wind ensemble, Jazz Ensemble A, saxophone quartet, and his own jazz combo named Five-Seven. As a member of SWOSU's Jazz Ensemble A, he has performed with Dan Haerle, Bob Bowman, Jack Mouse, Fred Forney, Janice Borla, Eddie Daniels, Pamela York, Lynn Seaton, Carl Allen, Dr. Michael Cox, Tom Williams, Dr. Robert Chambers, Dave Hanson, Drori Mondlak, Delores Williams, Byron Stripling, Frank Wess, Kenny Drew Jr.,Dennis Mackrel, Bill Watrous, Rich Eames, Jennifer Leitham, and Randy Drake.

As far back as I can remember I have always enjoyed performing music. I can remember during my elementary school years how I would play drums during church service. Some days I would sneak in my dad's closet to play his saxophone. I began learning how to play saxophone in middle school and by the time I was in high school I was learning piano, performing jazz, and composing music.
I went on to get a Bachelor of Music at the University of North Texas. I have been performing professionally for over 18 years. I also have taught band for 11 years in Dallas ISD. I enjoy teaching and mentoring other up and coming musicians. It's a joy to see another world open up to them through music.
Through my warm and positive personality and experience as a certified music teacher and music performer, I understand how to meet the social and education

I design lessons individually according to the needs and "wants" of each student. I specialize in developing and correcting technique in technique to improve the student's overall skill. Students that dedicate the time and effort each week to practicing see rapid and sustained results.

However, if you have a busy life and merely want to learn guitar for personal enjoyment, I will design your lessons to develop your skill at a pace that works for you, which can fluctuate according to your schedule.

***Young & Special Needs Students***

I teach children as young as 13 years old and adults to the age of 70 years old. When teaching younger children and individuals with special needs, it is significantly beneficial for parents to attend each lesson - I have parent seating available. When parent(s) attend lessons, the parent can assist the younger student while practicing during the week at home.

In my experience, the overall musical development and progress of younger students improve considerably when parents are involved.

Musical talent is a wonderful gift, but correct technique is not easily acquired without proper instruction. Your skill level eventually plateaus and your ability to learn and perform more complicated music is inhibited, unless you have a solid foundation in music theory as it applies to your instrument(s) as well as proper technique.

Chris M. is a multifaceted pianist and composer who is making waves in the Boston scene both as a bandleader and sideman. An active teacher, Chris has over 5 years of experience working with all ages and skill levels in settings ranging from private lessons to rock band camps. Praised for a sound that is €mature beyond his years, Mr. M. regularly performs with some of Boston'™s finest, including Jerry Bergonzi, George Garzone and Phil Grenadier. He currently leads the Wolfhound Trio, a jazz piano trio that pushes the boundaries of the genre through his compositions that incorporate influences ranging from Rage Against the Machine to Alexander Scriabin. He is currently pursuing an undergraduate degree at New England Conservatory on a presidential scholarship.

I am a 50-something-year-old business executive who began taking beginner piano lessons with Susan Merdinger almost 5 years ago.

Now, I am performing Chopin Nocturnes and Preludes and cherished works by Mozart and Beethoven to name just a few.

My Mom let me quit piano lessons in 1967 when I was growing up on the Southside of Chicago. I spent the next 45 years regretting it.

Now, as my piano teacher, Susan is inspiring me to make up for lost time.

At the end of each year, I am amazed at being able to play pieces I couldn’t have imagined performing 12 months earlier. This satisfying achievement comes only because of Susan’s character and competence as a teacher and her passion and enthusiasm to motivate me to practice 1 to 2 hours every day.

Susan is patient while maintaining very high standards with a commitment to excellence. She celebrates the progress of all her students to whom she is dedicated. While waiting for my lesson to begin, I have watched in amazement as she interacts with a full studio of very diverse students, young and old, boys and girls, beginners and advanced, even handicapped blind and autistic students. I’ve watched as she’s brought smiles to all her students after their recitals and audiences after her own concerts.

And Susan is one of the smartest persons I know who is expanding my horizons of the classical repertoire I play and appreciation of the classical music I listen to. There is a special pride to see your piano teacher perform solo or with members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at historic venues in Chicago or New York City.

I am a busy executive, but my piano lesson is the highlight of the week, even if that entails a 90-minute battle in Chicagoland rush hour traffic to get to my lesson.

That’s because my life is richer with the music Susan imparts.

I can’t recommend her strongly enough.

My students will learn basic piano instruction, music theory, chords and scales, rymthem and dynamics, and to express themselves thru music of there choice. Mrs G's Piano students all earn points for there practice time, lessons, duets, recitals, memorization and use those points to compete against themselves and earn prizes. Two recitals are held a year to promote confidence and accountability. I prefer the Alfred series for teaching piano lessons on my digital piano because it is fun and easy to learn with quick results. All the student needs to do is practice.

I'm very passionate about the benefits of piano lessons and do my best to make it fun and exciting and rewarding. You will learn on my digital piano with weekly lessons and expectation of you practicing every day for at least 20 minutes. Points are given for your accomplishments with prizes for all at the end of the month. Holiday and fun music is learned along with Two recitals a year should you choose to participate. Expression and enthusiasm, and building confidence is what I'm all about. I'm friendly and outgoing, and allow flexibility in my schedule to reschedule lessons if we must. My daughter has been taking lessons for 9 months and just did a 4 page duet with Mrs. 'G " at a recital. She is very energetic; she encourages and gives awards which the young kids respond to; sometimes her cat comes to listen. No pressure and the kids can pick some of the advance books of songs they like. We go in person but she is now open to Face Time lessons. She is also very flexible for sick days; snow days, and the typical crazy kid activity schedule. If you like personal, friendly postitive energy...Mrs. "G" is your teacher!

My Grandaughter, Lydia, is 8 years old and has been taking lessons from Mrs. "G"
since last September. Immediately, Lydia, felt welcome and comfortable. She has been in two recitals, and was in the Talent show at her school. We are all amazed at her proficiency at this early stage of learning. Her confidence in performing before an audience is all due to the way Mrs. "G" teaches. She makes the lessons fun and rewarding. I would recommend Brenda Ginther to any children interested in piano lessons. She is a joy to be with and Lydia loves her.

My son, Dade has been taking piano lessons with SooJi for four years now and unfortunately we have to stop as she moved to a new city. She is an absolutely gifted and exceptionally talented pianist and teacher. As a parent, I am engaged in every lesson, observing what my son is learning. Even if when he is tired, not fully prepared, SooJi never stops being kind to him. She always gives helpful tips for effective practice and progress. My son never stops smiling and laughing. Sometimes I join the lesson and also learn stuff and both my and my son just learn tons of new stuff from her lesson. Under SooJi's coaching, my son already finished two solo recitals, 40 minutes each. It is a REAL progress and I was really proud of my son, as he didn't know anything about music before meeting SooJi, and now he is able to play simple songs for people without getting nervous!
I also teach so I know this for sure. Teaching is a natural gift. Someone can be really good at something but might not be good at teaching. SooJi is a total gifted teacher. She knows what to teach, how to teach, what to use, how to deal with students and conflicts, and she is able to solve problems that my son had during practice. Whenever she says something, my son is like " now I got it!" and he is so happy learning from her.
She is an exceptional talent in performing piano as well. I asked her to play in my and my wife's wedding few weeks ago and she played few songs and it was absolutely gorgeous. I am just really sad and disappointed that she is not able to teach him anymore and I can not have fun with them again. But I know she will be literally the best piano teacher ever in whatever years from now. When you see her, you will clearly feel this: she is very professional, yet kind and super funny and silly. She is super talented, yet so humble. She is really good with any kinds of students, she just knows how to treat them differently.
I can see SooJi has a natural gift of teaching, and I do hope she comes back and teach my son again later. Thanks for the four years of teaching SooJi! We love you dear!

She was an outstanding teacher with an exceptional talent in piano performance and teaching. She is very knowledgeable. She stayed focused and she is passionate about the pieces and demonstrated a lot on the pieces. I can also tell she is a very good pianist because she was able to illustrate everything I had to know in such a short amount of time. Another thing I really appreciated was how quickly and fully she was able to communicate with me about the lesson times and any questions I had for playing. I am so thankful for her encouragement, smile, jokes, and all the tips she gave me in the lesson. She is a fantastic teacher for sure, and I definitely recommend her. She surely has a gift of teaching.

Dear SooJi,

You asked for my thoughts on you as a teacher, but I don't think I'll be able to explain those very easily. Your impact on my life is more than I can explain or show. Of all the things I've learned from you, I consider Korean to be of a lesser importance than the life lessons, friendship, and communication skills you've taught me, whether on purpose or not. I'm thankful for everything you've done for me. I'll never forget how understanding and compassionate you are, and I can only hope to grow up and be half the person you are now. In all honesty, you're the best teacher I've ever had, and now I can understand what people mean when they say "This teacher shaped who I am today" and I'll never forget on stop being thankful to them.
