About Kareem
A native of the Pacific Northwest, saxophonist Kareem K is a performer, composer, and educator, who is in high demand for his talents both on and off the stage.

Growing up in the northwest with its vibrant music scene allowed Kareem the opportunity to study with, listen to and perform with world class jazz artists residing in the area. Artists such as Tracy Knoop, Jay Thomas, Don Lanphere, Bill Ramsay, Hadley Caliman, Julian Priester and many others had a large impact on Kareem early in his musical education. This direction and guidance continues to inspire and lead Kareem as he continues his lifelong passion undertaking a career as a professional musician.

Today, as a performing artist he spends most of his time leading his group for which he composes and arranges most of the music. The band is constantly on the move as a sought af
ter performing group and spends most of its time performing in and around the Pacific Northwest. When not leading his own group Kareem can be seen and heard performing as a sideman with many other top notch musical acts and projects, most notably The Paperboys from Vancouver BC.

As an educator Kareem divides his time teaching jazz improvisation as an artist in residence at The Tacoma School of the Arts, directing the award winning student jazz ensemble at Pierce College, conducting masterclasses and workshops at schools around the Puget Sound area, and maintaining a full load of private students. Along with his teaching duties Kareem is the director or The Tacoma Jazz Association, serves on the Tacoma Arts Commission, and is a D'Addario Woodwinds performing artist.

Kareem holds a Bachelors Degree of Music from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle Washington which he attended after receiving a full scholarship.

Throughout his years of teaching Kareem has worked with students of all ages and abilities, from beginners just getting started, to advanced players who simply want new ideas and direction.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons are relaxed and are focused on what you would like to learn.

I usually begin with assessing where students are in their abilities and then come up with a lesson plan based on what they already know and what they would like to accomplish.
They can be geared towards a 5 year old with no musical training whatsoever, or to an advanced musician who wants to further develop their skills.

Topics that I cover in lessons throughout a typical day of teaching include: Instrument technique, sight reading skills ( note and rhythm recognition ), memorization skills, music theory, ear training, improvising, and composing.

After 3 to 6 months of lessons and regular practice a beginning student should have a good command of their instrument and a strong foundation of sight reading. At this point we normally will also have started some music theory as well. For students wanting to focus on jazz we will have already begun improvising as well.

*** Studio Equipment ***
5x10 room w/ piano and seating for parents

*** Specialties ***
I focus on the basics of learning to read music and basic technique on the instruments that I teach. From there I proceed with theory, ear training, improvising, composition etc. It all depends on what the students want to learn. I am comfortable teaching classical music as well as jazz, rock, composition, and improvisation.

Luther stays where I’m at and then helps me go the next step. That is useful for consistent gradual progress without the frustrations of moving either too slow or too fast (I am a beginning tenor saxophone player). Nice interpersonal style, patient and easy going, while methodical.

I think Luther is great. He works with my 10-year old son on piano, singing and even trumpet and violin as needed. My son has to work hard to progress, and Luther customizes the lesson plan for him and seems to understand him well. I'm really excited about them working together.

I know it's too early to write a review after the first lesson. However, I was surprised by the wonderful way Sergio handled the time and the introduction for such a hard instrument like the alto sax.
My son Moneer is so excited to continue learning how to play alto sax with Sergio. In short Sergio is a very talented music instructor!

While my degrees are in clarinet, I am also an accomplished saxophonist who has performed in ensembles throughout Colorado and Western Massachusetts, including jazz ensembles, musicals, and a professional saxophone quartet with performances at a regional North American Saxophone Alliance (NASA) Conference. I have experience ranging from helping students just learning their instrument all the way to students looking at All State or college auditions.

About Leslie
Leslie is a Denver based musician—clarinetist and teacher—who performs in solo and collaborative projects across the state while maintaining an active teaching studio. Leslie is in high demand as both a performer and teacher. Recent performances include solo performances is Denver and Stapleton, several chamber performances with her wind trio Enigma and the Lamont Clarinet Choir, and appearances with the Lone Tree Symphony, the San Juan Symphony, Lakewood Symphony, the Denver Pops Orchestra, the Littleton Symphony, the Lamont Symphony Orchestra, and extensive time playing Eb clarinet with the Lamont Wind Ensemble.

After she began playing clarinet with her hands switched, and consequently as the worst clarinetist in her band, Leslie began studying privately and soon discovered a passion for teaching and helping her own students improve
the way her teachers helped her. Leslie is a passionate educator who has spent time on faculty at Mt. Holyoke College and the Eaglebrook School. She currently maintains a private studio in Denver and is an active guest clinician across Colorado.

Leslie studied clarinet at Adams State, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and recently completed a Performance Certificate at the University of Denver. Influential teachers include Dr. Tracy Doyle, Claudia Weir, Michael Sussman, and Dr. Jeremy Reynolds. Leslie loves the color green, otters, Beethoven Symphony Number 7, Mozart operas, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, the smell of rosemary, and her rather aggressive, toothless cat.

Jazz & Classical Saxophone, Jazz Theory & Improvisation, Jazz Arranging & Composition, PMEA Audition Preparation

About Stephen
My name is Stephen and I’m a passionate saxophonist, composer, and arranger. Having just graduated from the Mason Gross School of the Arts where I studied with the legendary saxophone virtuoso/composer Ralph Bowen, I’ve already amassed significant experience in performance and music education.

My first musical experience, at five years old, was under the tutelage of classical Suzuki piano, a discipline which revolves around learning pieces by ear and performing pieces from memory sans sheet music. By the end of my piano studies, I had graduated Suzuki Association’s Level V and performed pieces at the highest level (level 8) under the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. Towards the end of my classical piano studies, I transitioned into focusing on saxophone as my primary instrument.

In high school, I primarily played te
nor saxophone. There, I had the distinct honor of leading the marching band, wind ensemble, and jazz band saxophone sections as section leader, a position in which I held the responsibility of teaching, preparing, and organizing students to meet the challenges of a variety of musical performances. As well as performing in nearly every music ensemble at the high school level (including performances of the musical “Little Shop of Horror” on alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and flute) I had the distinct honor to participate in the classical and jazz offerings of the rigorously auditioned Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) ensembles. Out of countless saxophonists in the state, I was one of two tenor saxophonists chosen to perform in the district, region, and all-state wind ensembles and the only musician to be regaled the PMEA Richard Merrell Band Scholarship. In the jazz realm, my high school jazz ensemble auditioned and was chosen to be the only high school ensemble to perform at the 2015 PMEA state conference. With such a variety of music education and performance experiences, I was ready to continue my music education at the Mason Gross School of the Arts, an undergraduate program I chose specifically to study with Grammy nominated Ralph Bowen, known in the jazz world as a gifted educator.

Before heading off to college and over course of two summers, I had the opportunity to study at the prestigious Berklee Five Week Summer Jazz Performance Program. For the second summer, I auditioned and earned a half-tuition scholarship.

While at Mason Gross, as well as having the opportunity to study with Ralph Bowen on a weekly basis, I had the amazing opportunity to study with one of world’s greatest jazz drummers and composers, Victor Lewis, and other luminaries of the music including pianist Bill O’ Connell and bassist Kenny Davis. I performed in both classical and jazz ensembles, including the symphonic band, a myriad of chamber jazz ensembles, and the school’s top jazz band, “Jazz Ensemble 1.” As well as performing in school ensembles, I performed with my own jazz quartet in locations all around the New Jersey area including shows for the New Brunswick Jazz Project and the New Jersey Jazz Society. As a composer, I worked hard to compose a new piece every week for my junior and senior years. This productivity, as well as constant refinement under the guidance of Ralph Bowen and Victor Lewis, resulted in an honors college guided senior recital with all original material and an accompanying 40-page honors thesis on my personal process in jazz composition. As well as practicing and composing for many hours every day, I made Dean’s list every semester throughout my college career and maintained a high GPA, ultimately graduating with highest honors, Summa Cum Laude with an Honors College certificate and award.

Over the summers between undergraduate study, I have been blessed to have amazing opportunities to teach both privately and with excellent music programs. The most notable of music program experiences have been the two years in which, I interned at the Play, on Philly! summer program. There, I worked as a teaching assistant in the classroom and taught jazz, woodwind chamber ensembles, and assisted students during orchestral rehearsals, while also juggling administrative responsibilities for students ranging from 6 to 18 years of age. Most recently, I was back with the Play, on Philly! summer program as a teaching artist, where I taught a high school music composition course that ended with an opportunity for the students to have their compositions workshopped and recorded in a studio by a professional group, “Orchestra 2001”, an ensemble which focuses upon the Grammy nominated works of modern classical composers.

My teaching philosophy, shaped through years of varied classroom and private experiences, revolves around empathy and individuality. Every student is unique in their strengths and deficiencies, and it is my job as a teacher to figure out the most effective and enjoyable method of conveying knowledge. I specialize in creating personal, individualized practice plans and exercises for students, even going so far as writing etudes and recording transcription exercises with specific students in mind. I am looking forward to teaching students in any and all categories of music, including:
Saxophone Technique
Jazz or Classical Saxophone
Jazz Improvisation
Jazz or Classical Composition
Jazz and Music Theory
Preparation for PMEA or College auditions
Jazz Transcription
Sibelius or Finale Notation Software
