I taught music theory at University of Milwaukee while I was in graduate school! I also have taught very young children to adults in their sixties, so it you think music theory is "too hard" or it is "too late..."

Try me! Music theory is the road map to understanding why things sound cool. We wouldn't know why these words sound the way they do without studying our ABC's!

No need to be nervous before my lessons. I have taught lessons to ages 6 to students in their 70's! My lessons have a comfortable atmosphere where students can be okay learning with mistakes; through trial and error. I always keep a light mood with quick bits of humor. I teach in a relaxing way, but at the same time you may expect to leave with new musical knowledge every lesson. I enjoy showing the connections between music and other areas of study and life. I graduated from the University of St. Thomas "Cum Laude" in 2011 with a Bachelor's Degree in Guitar Performance, with minors in Music Production & Composition. I am experienced in most major genres of music: classical, jazz, blues, rock, funk, folk, metal, acoustic fingerstyle/slap, instrumental rock, "shred," pop, world music, electronica, etc. & feel comfortable conveying the techniques, approaches & idioms to a student by breaking them down into digestible components, while making these new ideas relatable to material they are already familiar with.

In the end, I want the student to learn what they're most interested in learning. I'm here to answer any questions they may have & with my experiences, I feel confident that I will be able to either answer these questions or point them in the right direction. Some topics covered:

The student will learn at the pace they set for themselves & can only get out of it the amount of effort they put forth. I expect my students to practice on a regular basis (however brief each session may be). Consistency is key for progress to be made, & if they hold up their end of the bargain, the payoffs will be quite substantial!

I went to Sarah Lawrence College from 1983 to 1987 and studied early music, chamber improvisation and composition. I also attended Berklee School of Music from 1983 to 1984, and studied bass performance, ear training and arranging. My teachers have included Rick Laird (bass), Meyer Kupferman (composition, improvisation and theory), Karl Berger (improvisation), Michael Manring (bass), Adam Nitti (bass) and Chris Tarry (Bass). I was a guitar and bass instructor at School of Rock NYC from 2008 to 2009, and also a volunteer bass instructor at Gerald Veasley's Bass Boot Camp. I am currently an instructor at Come Join The Band which is an after school program that pairs pro musicians with kids to write original music .

I wasn't Tom's student per se but he and I went over lots of material for our various cover bands and he's a very thorough, patient teacher, very adamant about getting parts exactly right but willing to listen to occasional disagreements. highly recommended!

my experience

Tom really knows his way around a bass. Each time I go for a lesson, i leave happy about the things we've accomplished in the lesson. Anything that i would like to learn Tom makes it possible for me to do so. I started getting lessons in order to not slow down on my playing. With my schedule constantly changing Tom has been very nice at accommodating when possible.

Applauded for his “gleaming trumpet work” (Hyde Park Herald), Justin B. is a versatile musician, performing on both historical and modern trumpets. He specializes in early music, most notably in difficult high-register music for Baroque trumpet. Before formally studying Baroque trumpet, Justin won first prize in multiple historical instruments divisions of the National Trumpet Competition. Dr. B. is now often sought as a Baroque trumpeter by numerous ensembles throughout North America. He has performed on period instruments with Musica Angelica, Apollo’s Fire, the American Bach Soloists, Tempesta di Mare, Lyra Baroque, Bach Collegium San Diego, Baroque Band, Madison Bach Musicians, Handel Choir of Baltimore, Early Music Alberta, Magnolia Baroque Festival, Oregon Bach Festival, the Washington Bach Consort, Chantry, Orchestra of the 17th Ce
ntury, the Jubilate Orchestra, Choral Arts Philadelphia, Mannheim Rocket, and the Washington Cornett and Sackbut Ensemble. For the 2015-2016 season, in addition to engagements in the U.S. and Canada, Justin will be performing on Baroque trumpet in Europe.

As a modern trumpeter, Justin has experience performing in orchestras, wind ensembles, jazz ensembles, pit orchestras for opera and musical theater, British brass bands, and numerous chamber ensembles. Before beginning his college career, he was principal trumpeter of the DC Youth Orchestra and had the opportunity to tour Japan as a trumpet soloist. He also performed regularly with the Prince George’s Philharmonic while in high school. More recently, he as appeared as a soloist with the South Dakota Symphony, the Firelands Symphony, and the Las Vegas Sinfonietta.

In addition to be being a trumpeter, Justin is also a countertenor and has sung with Apollo’s Fire and Opera Cleveland. While in Ohio, he was an alto section leader in the chamber and chancel choirs at Trinity Cathedral in downtown Cleveland and was the countertenor with Cantores Cleveland (now Contrapunctus). In addition, Justin briefly served as a bass section leader at Church of the Covenant in Cleveland. Justin also plays recorder.

Justin recently earned his DMA in trumpet performance from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He received his MA in early music performance practices from Case Western and his BM in trumpet performance from the University of Maryland. His primary trumpet teachers include Chris Gekker, Barry Bauguess, Steven Hendrickson, Steven Trinkle, and Justin Emerich. He has studied voice with Delores Zeigler, Ellen Hargis, and Aaron Sheehan. As a graduate assistant, Justin taught courses in ear training and music appreciation, and was a harpsichord tuner.

I can't compare Justin with any other teacher as my child has had only one trumpet instructor; but I believe they do not come much, if any better, than Justin! He is a natural teacher. He is punctual, caring, patient, encouraging, and most professional. I especially like the way he consistently corrects the "little" bad habits that may become a monumental problem later. I consider it an honor having my child being taught by Justin.

Hi, I'm Glenn. Thank you for viewing my profile. I've been teaching students for over 20 years, playing all styles and levels of music, from day-one beginners to seasoned pros seeking to sharpen their playing skills. I teach both traditional notation and tablature, writing my own teaching methods in both formats. I can transcribe any song or solo for you, and can arrange the music to fit your particular level of skill.

I earned a B.A. in Music Composition and an A.A. in music theory, and have worked as a professional musician since graduation. I play in a variety of bands that cover rock, jazz, surf, oldies, and country, and also write and arrange music for those bands as well as writing my own music that can be heard on my own YouTube channel.

Glenn is very patient and has a great sense of humor. Even though I only had a 30 minute beginner class with him, he gave me plenty direction and encouragement to start. With his lesson plan, practice exercises and his guidance, I feel confident that I have the tools to master my instrument.

Michelle is great! She is very professional and patient, but a couple things that truly make her stand out.

One, she is always willing to record an accompaniment for the song of your choice so that you can easily work on your own. Sometimes she even does a couple versions. Better still, when I was really struggling she tailor made exercises for me so that I could improve.

Two, she explains things very well. For example, I struggled with visualizing how the physical parts of my voice interact with each other and what physically happens when I sing. Her explanation combined with the diagrams from her singing books allowed me to finally make the connection.

You can’t go wrong with Michelle!

A native of Charlotte, NC, Zachary began his musical career as a tuba player and jazz bass guitarist. While attending The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Zachary began singing in various vocal groups on campus and developed his love for the singing voice. With encouragement from the music faculty, Zachary began training as an operatic baritone while at UNC. While attending UNC, Zachary was awarded both the Fischer Scholarship in Voice and the Tony McDowell Voice Scholarship. His singing brought him to Boston in the summer of 2010 to begin study at The Boston Conservatory. While performing various opera roles and attending summer programs, Zachary also opened his private studio and taught at a local music academy.

Baritone Zachary B. is quickly establishing himself as an active operatic performer. Equally at home on the recital stage, his versatile lyric baritone voice fits a wide range of repertoire and styles. A graduate of The Boston Conservatory, Zachary has performed roles like the titular role in Don Giovanni, Ramiro in L'Heure Espagnole, L'horloge comtoise in L'Enfant et les sortileges, Pooh-Bah in The Mikado, and Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief.

Starting in February 2013, Zachary will also be available through TakeLessons for online instruction. Lessons will still focus on energy, breath, and solid technique, so please contact him if you think this venue of instruction will be a good fit!

Regardless of your background, I believe in making lessons fun, encouraging, and accessible. This means that my work with you will, by nature, be incredibly personal and always formulated for your specific musical goals. I will constantly strive to make sure you are comfortable in our work together as we explore singing, speaking, and music theory.

I believe every singing or speaking voice can benefit from a foundation in classical vocal technique. Whether you prefer to learn through singing songs or through various exercises, I can customize our lesson plan to fit your needs. Therefore, I provide a fun and engaging lesson atmosphere, but you need to bring your best as well! We will both be happier with the process if we are equally invested in your growth. We will start with something you already know (an aria, vocal exercise, or excerpt from a song) and work toward singing in your preferred vocal style. For example, classical singers will build their knowledge of English, German, Italian, and French diction and song styles. Additionally, I will always respect and include my student's musical interests.

Along the way, I am happy to address basic music theory ideas. If you prefer, we can also spend additional time reviewing and learning those principles to enrich your musical experience. I will always provide different exercises and ideas to keep your brain active in the singing process.

I believe in whole body, whole spirit singing. As a performer, I employ a variety of holistic exercises and theories to develop my own voice, such as basic Alexander Technique principles, voice therapy techniques, a variety of pedagogical palates, and energy work. If these sorts of things interest you, I am more than happy to incorporate them into our lessons. My personal results with those practices have been incredible, so I am always eager to share.

My personality is outgoing and energetic, so I bring that sort of atmosphere to a lesson. I expect preparedness and readiness on your part to maximize our work together. To learn music theory or not to learn music theory, that is the question. This is really a personal preference. While I do recommend all musicians have at least a basic knowledge of theory it is not mandatory. Like anything, there are benefits to it. Eddie Van Halen can't read music, so you can excel on any instrument without it. BUT, it is very beneficial in my opinion.

An experienced classical and contemporary musician, Charlie has performed at events such as the West Coast Premiere of Sila by John Luther Adams (Ojai Festival), and with ensembles including the Center Stage Opera, Santa Monica Symphony, and Symphonia Pasadena.

His formal education started at Interlochen Arts Academy at age 13 and continued at the University of North Texas, during which time he began to play professionally with the Shreveport Symphony, Sherman Symphony, and the East Texas Symphony. He then relocated to Los Angeles to earn his MFA at California Institute of Arts, under instruction from Peter Rofe (Los Angeles Philharmonic), Darek
Oles (Brad Mehldau), and Erika Duke-Kirkpatrick.

He is a frequent performer of new music and has premiered works for solo double bass by contemporary composers including Sean Hayward and Chuck Gloria. His own music explores his influences of folk and the blues and has included collaborations with electronic, avant garde, bluegrass, and jazz musicians.

Hello! My name is Steph and I would love to teach beginner students who are just starting out and intermediate flute players who want to get better at fundamentals: tone, technique, vibrato, articulation, etc. I recently graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bloomsburg University with a Bachelor's of Arts degree in Music, where I focused on flute performance. While at Bloomsburg, I taught private lessons to college-age students who were beginners to intermediate flutists. I have studied many major classical works as well as modern works with extended techniques. I was principal chair of Bloomsburg University's Wind Ensemble and Concert Band for three years, and I was actively involved in our New Music Ensemble. I had Stephanie as a tutor in music theory all the way through my theory classes in college, and she is a great help. She is very friendly and extremely patient, and helped me come out of my shell and feel comfortable in my theory classes. I cannot stress enough what a wonderful bright person she is, and how great she is at what she does! She is an extremely intelligent and qualified instructor, as well as being a brilliant flutist.

I have been playing different instruments and singing since I was little, and I finally wanted to take a crack at the flute! Steph is a WONDERFUL teacher, she is dedicated and kind. She can found techniques that work for me and my tone improved a lot. I learned a lot from her and I have found a new hobbie. She is also a very good theory teacher and is good at explaining the concepts. I would recommend her to anyone!
