About Desiree
I'm excited to be a TakeLessons instructor and to be able to share my experience and knowledge with you. I have been a singer and performer for over 20 years and have taught voice and beginning piano for over 12 years.

I received a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. I continued my studies in New York City in voice, acting and diction.

I continue to be an active performer specializing in musical theater, opera and concert. I began my professional career as an apprentice with the Portland Opera in Oregon. My love for music has taken me across the U.S. and around the world. I come to Pittsburgh via Memphis, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Portland, New York City, ports around the globe through Cunard Cruise L
ines, San José, and Chattanooga.

Currently, I can be seen performing the first Tuesday of each month with Aria412 at Wallace's at Hotel Indigo. I especially enjoy new music and have premiered new works with Pittsburgh Festival Opera, Alia Musica and the New Dischord Festival. The most exciting premiere was the title role in Eve Apart by composer Tim Hinck and my husband, which was produced both in Chattanooga and Pittsburgh. My favorite operatic role is Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute and I have had the pleasure of singing it with Undercroft Opera, Opera San Jose, West Bay Opera, Stockton Opera, Pocket Opera and as a Resident Artist at Portland Opera.

I premiered the role of Flora Dart in A New Kind of Fallout by composer Gilda Lyons and playwright Tammy Ryan with the Pittsburgh Festival Opera. That same season I portrayed Joe Boyd in PFO's gender bending Damn Yankees. Other theatrical performances include Roselinda in Die Fledermaus with Undercroft Opera, Despina in Cosi fan tutte with Mission City Opera, Blonde in Abduction from the Seraglio with Pocket Opera, Cunegonde in Candide with Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., and Rosa Bud in The Mystery of Edwin Drood with Chattanooga Theater Center. I have appeared as Abigail in The Crucible, Mabel in The Pirates of Penzance, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Lucy in Threepenny Opera and Celeste #1 in Sunday in the Park with George.

As a soloist with Pittsburgh's new music ensemble Alia Musica, I premiered Kierkegaard's Pantoum by composer David Lidov, was soprano soloist in Shadow in the Hot Sun by Paris-based composer Nissim Schaul and Al Vacio by composer Federico Garcia, a work she premiered at the inaugural New Dischord Festival in Chattanooga. I created the role of Pamela in the premier of TOOWHOPERA by composer Sorrel Hays in Rome, GA.

I was named a world finalist in the Luciano Pavarotti International Voice Competition, a regional finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, a semi-finalist in the Jenny Lind Competition and a regional winner in the MacAllister Competition.

Whether it is preparing for a competition, an audition or a role for the school play, I enjoy helping students of all ages reach their goals. I structure the curriculum to the individual needs of my students, focusing on healthy vocal technique, musicianship, stage presence, and joy in music.

During your first lesson, you will sing various vocalises to determine how you negotiate the changes in registration, what your vocal range is, and what you have to work on to improve your vocal quality, stamina, and flexibility.

If you do not see an available time, please call Takelessons. I sometimes have availability that is not visible on my calendar.

About Cindy
Cindy has been making music for as long as she can remember. She was the assistant director of a synagogue children's choir by age 14 and has directed and sung with many community choirs and pickup groups since then. But it wasn't until 1996 that she discovered the autoharp and began teaching and performing in earnest. Now one of the best recognized autoharp workshop leaders in the US, she has taught and performed at festivals and private concerts from Pennsylvania to California, as well as Tasmania, Australia, England, Scotland, aboard cruise ships, and in Sweden. She also shares her knowledge of old-time West Virginia fiddle techniques and repertoire, and is known locally as a sympathetic and effective voice teacher for those who think they cannot sing. In addition to her teaching activities, Cindy founded and directs the Pittsburgh
Threshold Choir, a group of women who sing at the bedsides of people who are very ill or dying. She is also the leader of GrayScale, a non-traditional band that plays for square dances and contradances.

Lessons with Cindy are self-directed with coaching intended to help the student accomplish his or her personal objectives. She will ask you to provide examples of music that you love so much that you'd be willing to work hard to learn to play it, and you will find yourself working on that music right from the start. Technique is taught in the context of the music: if you need a technique for a particular song, you will learn that technique. And of course once you've mastered a technique it's yours to use on the next song or tune and the next. It's a constant process of enjoying the music and discovering and mastering the technique needed to recreate it in your own playing or singing.

*** Lesson Details ***
Lessons start with a review of the work you've been doing. We might take that song or tune to the next level with a new technique, or we might apply technique you've already learned to a new piece. Every lesson is different, customized to the needs of the student at that moment.

I recently approached Cindy for vocal coaching on songs that I perform on a regular basis with my duet. I am extremely pleased with her instruction. She was to the point, very clear and concise with her guidance. I know she improved my performance (I had a concert the very next day!). She gave me so much to think about. I really trust her approach with me. She made me feel very much at ease, which resulted in rapid-fire student/teacher give and take vocal direction. This is the way I like to learn! I loved my time with her and will certainly have another session with her soon!

About Laura
I am a pianist, songwriter, and keyboard player and backup singer for a prog-rock band and also a music teacher.

I've been teaching music for a long time. Why? Because I love music and I love to teach. My mission statement: get you to enjoy music while learning.

The best moments on my work are when the students realize that they can play/sing something that they couldn't do before. I love their expressions at that moment.

I started playing music when I was 7: the recorder, the Spanish guitar, a double keyboard organ that I used to learn how to play the piano by myself. Later on, I started with official piano lessons and ended with my BA in piano.

My training was classical but I love new age music and jazz.

During my piano lessons, you can learn theory, composition, play classical music and know the differences between diffe
rent periods, play pop, jazz, rock, learn how to read lead sheets. I adapt songs you like to your skills so you can start playing your favorite music from the first day.

During my singing lessons, you can learn how to use your "instrument" (your voice) properly: breathing, posture, pitch, resonance, agility, vocal range, riffs.

My son, Dominick, has taken voice lessons with Laura for a few months at the School of Rock. He made great progress and was able to perform nicely. He feels very close to Laura and misses her a lot and can't wait to learn with her again when he's back in town.

About Brooke
I believe that making music should be a fun and creative experience. I specialize in teaching piano functionally which means helping you to learn the type of music you want to play as quickly as possible while giving you the tools to add your own style to a piece.

When a new student is learning music, it is most important to establish a love of the instrument in order to see results. This is made possible by teaching music theory, sight reading, technique, and ear training led by the student's natural interests. I have over ten years of experience working with kids across a variety of settings with one year experience in special needs and four years working in music composition and performance.

Please let me know if you have any questions, I'd be happy to speak with you!

Hi! My name's Dan, and I'm a saxophonist, flutist, clarinetist, teacher, and avid learner of pretty much everything!

I just received my Advanced Music Studies Certificate from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, adding to my Master's in Music from Duquesne University (also in Pittsburgh), and my Bachelor's in Music from Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio. My teachers have been classical tenor sax pioneer James Houlik, retired Air Force Bandsman Keith Young, international soloist Greg Banaszak, and famed jazz arranger and saxophonist Mike Tomaro.

In addition to studying classical and jazz saxophone, I've also done extra work learning flute and clarinet and tutoring music theory, history, and composition. I've played in orchestras and big bands, and Beatles cover bands, musical pits, free jazz collectives - you name it!

As
a soloist, I have been a guest lecturer and recitalist at the Navy Band Saxophone Symposium and the winner of the Carnegie Mellon University Concerto Competition. My chamber groups have been the winners of the Pittsburgh Concert Society Competition, quarter-finalists in the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and guest presenters at TedX events. I've also given lectures on various musical topics at the Osher Institute for Lifelong Learning.

I love to learn, and my interests don't stop with music! I know a good deal of Spanish, French, Italian, and German, I can identify most species of birds in the US by sight and song, and I can name and locate every country in the world. I just love to learn, and I hope I can pass that love on to my students!

Dan is an incredible saxophone teacher and he helped me a lot. In the quartet, he helped me how to listen to the other group members’ parts and then I can really fit into the group. For my solo piece, he gave me a lot of helpful comments, which helped me make my music sound beautifully. What he does all the time is helping me be aware of everything, and growing to be more professional!
