She has enjoyed a career as a professional vocalist performing in nightclubs, music festivals, casino's, and as an opening act for many national and touring performers. As a teacher, Melody draws from her experiences on the road, in front of the camera, and in the studio. She currently holds a Bachelor's of Music Degree from San Diego State University's Don Powell school of Music and Dance, and is a Certified SLS Vocal Technique Instructor. She teaches all ages, from young children to seasoned adults.

SKYPE LESSONS: Since I moved to Pennsylvania from San Diego, I have begun taking all of my lessons from Seth Riggs via Skype. I also maintained almost my entire San Diego student base by teaching via Skype, and in addition starting accepting students from all over the country and the world. I now have a very busy studio with an over 70% Skype student base due to the high demand for SLS technique and a balanced approach to singing instruction.
My youngest Skype student is 4 years old, and I recently held my first Skype Student integrated recital where online students performed live on a big screen from the comfort of their own homes! I'm constantly thinking of new ways to engage students from all corners of the world, create an online studio community, and offer performance and learning opportunities. Skype lessons are a great option for those without access to good vocal technique instructors or those who have tight schedules and prefer not to battle traffic on the way to the voice studio.

I am a full-time pedagogue/performer with ten years' experience teaching private lessons in voice, piano, and acting to a range of ages and levels of students. Although the majority of my students are young adults, I have worked successfully with children, teenagers, and adult students (twenties to senior citizens) of both genders; I tailor my approach specifically to the goals and interests of each student; no two people learn the same way.
I hold a Bachelor's of Music in vocal performance from West Virginia University (summa cum laude, WVU Outstanding Senior, Honors College J. and C. One of my students, a teen-aged boy, was selected to attend Eastman's summer program for high school students, and another student received a full college scholarship in music. Several of my students have performed leading roles in school, community, and university musical productions.
I hold a full voting membership in the National Association of Teachers of Singing, am a Licensed Kindermusik Educator, am employed as Director of Music Ministry for a fairly large church, and am a chapter officer for the American Guild of Organists. I was also a teaching artist at Propel East Charter School for Greensburg American Opera and directed the Old Economy Singers (a twenty-voice historical choir) for six years.

I provide professional, knowledgeable, and individualized instruction in a supportive and encouraging environment. During the course of study with me, I expect voice students will improve vocal technique and sound quality, alleviate physical tension which may be interfering with phonation, expand their range, learn new repertoire, increase confidence, and grow as performing artists.
My vocal teaching method focuses on correct breathing and resonance; I also incorporate some activities from Barry Green's "Inner Game of Music" technique. Although my teaching is grounded in a scientific approach to the process of phonation, I also believe singing should be a fun experience for the student. We sing to communicate! I believe that a thorough technical foundation is necessary for free and healthy singing in any genre of music. I am willing to work with students in the vocal styles that interest them most; although my professional performance experience is in opera and musical theatre, I have also successfully worked with students whose interests included jazz, pop, rock, folk music, contemporary Christian music, and choral singing.
My piano pedagogical method matches each student with the right curriculum-- Alfred, Schaum, or Piano Adventures-- plus supplemental technical exercises such as scales, arpeggios, and Czerny and Hanon exercises. All students are exposed to theory through worksheets, games, and other applied activities. As soon as possible, I introduce "real" repertoire from master composers.

What I DIDN'T Know

Emily is an awesome coach and instructor. Yes I said coach! A coach actually encourages you, and that is what she did for me. Anyway, as for the title, "What I DIDN'T Know", there were things in film auditions that I didn't know that would were actually sabotaging my chances for auditions. Emily worked on these real quick and fixed them up.Long story short, I had an audition yesterday, and using Emily's lessons's the casting director said, "Wow, that was actually really good"

My introductory class includes a computer analysis of your singing voice, then describes the main parts of your vocal instrument, how each works, and how they work together. It teaches you what a song is, and how to sing a song well right away.

I have had 7 singing teachers, and none of them compare to Carl. I told him about my past experiences with my teachers and he understood the frustration I felt. He geniuenly cares about his students' personal goals and really pushes you to be you. I feel so relieved that I found Carl. I'd reccomend him to any singer at any level!

Juliana - outstanding professional singer and teacher, who has given my daughter and I unforgettable experience of vocal training. Her way of teaching has helped us discover are passion for singing and improving our vocals.

What an absolutely AMAZING experience! Juliana is not only a wonderful instructor, she is a true mentor whom my daughter adores. When we first signed up for lessons, it was to build my daughter's self-esteem, as she has several mandatory performances at school. What started out as a summer adventure has morphed into a regular slot for us on Juliana's calendar:)! About Glenn
I have been active in the entertainment industry since the age of 12, when I gave my first professional performance. Prior to that I was already being introduced to music with years of guitar, and then vocal instruction. I do not remember a time of my life when I was not singing somewhere; in the house, in the yard, in the classroom. That is perhaps why I identify so well with the young people who gather so much enjoyment from "just singing" at every opportunity. I studied professionally for over 10 years with renown soprano and voice teacher Sylvia Jensen, who was instrumental in the enhancement of my vocal knowledge and technique. She is now the Director of Education for the Miss Ohio pageants of the Miss America competitions, elevating many young ladies to the national spotlight. At age 14, I auditioned for, and was added to cast of a
network television variety program, "The Gene Carroll Show", that was a television institution for over 30 years in the Midwest. I was a featured performer on that program for over 7 years, all the while perfecting the art of "playing to a camera." This experience was invaluable, and the knowledge I gathered is now included in my curriculum. I also began performing a solo act in the nightclub circuit at the age of 15, performing up and down the "north coast" from Cleveland, OH, (my home), to Erie. PA. At a very young age, I learned the difficult art of choosing musical material and pacing a show; also adapting to performing under a myriad of conditions with a vast array of musical accompaniment. After graduating college with a degree in Business Administration and Marketing, I assembled my own band, and took to the road. That experience eventually brought the act to Las Vegas in 1982. Over the years my show has been a staple in major casino cabarets in Las Vegas, and all over Nevada. Since my first engagement at The Landmark Hotel in the early 1980's, I have literally been up and down the famed Las Vegas Strip many times over. The Desert Inn, The Dunes, The Stardust, The Maxim, The Tropicana, New York New York, Mandalay Bay, MGM, Bally's, The Flamingo, The Imperial Palace, The Four Queens, The Golden Nugget, The Fremont, The Venetian, The Palazzo, and a three year engagement at The Riviera. My show is truly comprised of musical variety; classics, show tunes, jazz, rock, blues, r&b, country. Even a presentation of "Music of the Night" from Phantom of the Opera, that I perform in full costume. It is this ability to successfully deliver an extensive repertoire that I am enthusiastic about passing along to the next generation of entertainers.

I have been truly blessed in my career to have experienced so many highlights; too many to document. From winning an understudy roll in the Broadway Musical "Platinum" starring Hollywood actress Alexis Smith, to performing our National Anthem at events ranging from Major League Baseball to ESPN Boxing to receptions for major dignitaries, to recording 7 albums and a full-length video, to being asked to perform for Mr. Frank Sinatra at the Frank Sinatra Celebrity Golf Tournament, I have lived a full life on stage, learning and absorbing every bit of knowledge gathered along the way.
Now it is my desire to escalate my status as an educator to a more "one on one" experience; availing myself the opportunity to pass along that wealth of knowledge to individual students who aspire to enjoy the entertainment profession as I have, providing them with the skills needed to successfully compete. Or, should it be their choice not to pursue entertainment as a vocation, to gain a working understanding of all facets of their instrument so as to gain a better appreciation of music. Whatever the goal of the student, I feel that I am equipped to provide them with the tools needed to achieve that goal.

*** Lesson Details ***
Content of Sessions

Generally, the first 10-15 minutes of each lesson will be focused on vocal warm up and exercise. (For guitar students, we will review the previous
week's assignment). For Vocal Students, it is understood that the voice mechanism is made up of muscles, and as an athlete prepares for a sporting event, a singer must prepare to vocalize. It is at this time in our lesson when the student will develop good habits of voice maintenance, which will serve them well throughout their careers. The proper care and preservation of the vocal unit cannot be stressed enough, especially for pubescent and pre-pubescent students. Vocal chords in a developmental stage are most susceptible to damage, and because they are particularly sensitive, they must be handled with care. Our warm up regimen is designed to strengthen as well as preserve the singing voice.

I am not an advocate of getting too involved and "bogged down" in the technical aspects of singing, especially with the young students, and
especially early in our program. This is not to say that breath control, tonality, pitch, etc. are not vital to good singing, because these workings are ESSENTIAL, and their application will certainly be incorporated into our studies. Some instructors, on occasion, have a tendency to lose sight of the fact that much to do with singing happens "naturally", and too much focus on the "technical" can actually be inhibiting. This can alter a beautiful, natural tone into one that is unnatural and contrived.

I adhere to the philosophy that above all else, SINGERS WANT TO SING SONGS, and musicians-in-training want to play music. That is our focus, and all of our training is conceived with that objective in mind. All the technical knowledge and coaching serves no purpose without practical application. It is my belief that the most significant progress occurs when a vocalist is singing a song.

Nearly every element of instruction can be utilized in the performance of one song. This is why the majority of our session time will be spent "in song". For the very young student, we will concentrate our efforts with the students choices of favorite and familiar songs. The older students will undoubtedly have favorite songs, styles and artists. Special attention will be paid to the genre most enjoyed by the student, but diversity will be emphasized as well, and a variety of genres will be unpacked and explored. I believe that whatever a student's musical goals and aspirations, it is in their best interest to gain knowledge and insight in all facets of music, singing, and performance.

The most vital pre-requisite for any student is their enthusiasm. My ambition will be to harness that enthusiasm and channel it productively through stimulating instruction. Our sessions will be informative and educational, but always predicated upon "having fun with music".

My studio is equipped with a full vocal sound system with microphones that I utilize to teach the valuable art of mic technique. Young students enjoy using the mics and hearing themselves sing and perform. Since our lessons are predicated on enjoying the art of singing, this opportunity has proven invaluable. For the advanced performer, studying all aspects of amplification and what a singer should know about their stage sound is a part of our educational curriculum. My studio is furnished with the equipment that is essential to mastering that knowledge.
Since the practical aspect of my course is based on singing songs, I provide all the latest technology required to allow my students the opportunity to sing the songs of their choosing, with and without the lead vocal tracks. I feel that when students are singing their favorite songs, it offers me the greatest teaching opportunities. I make certain the every musical genre can be represented, and feel I have the knowledge and ability to guide the student is whatever their musical tastes. I was very pleased with Glenn and the help he gave myself and two other co-workers on the presentation we have to make this week at our conference. -Young kids in voice can expect their lessons to be fun and educational including using visual tools like scarves and shakers, and imaginative play to learn vocal techniques needed to sing on pitch and with proper breathe control.

-Children in piano lessons will learn music theory and piano technique through simple songwriting exercises, theory games, visual tools and more. They will learn about composer's lives and musical styles, providing them with a well-rounded lesson experience.

-Music theory/composition students will be taught how to read and write music. Students will be invited to improvise on the piano and record their improvisations.They will be taught how to sight-sing in order to learn how to notate any melodies in their head
They will learn how music has changed and been influenced throughout history. They will learn how to read lead sheets and use stylistic invariants in their playing. They will be provided with honest feedback and constructive help on their compositions.They will learn how the human brain processes music and how best to capitalize upon this process for the greatest audience appeal.

About me!

I am a Westminster Choir College '11 Alum  who graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in Music, summa cum laude. I also have my master's degree in music therapy from Drexel University. I am also a Member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a  Board Certified Music Therapist. During my time at school I performed at Carnegie Hall and the Kimmel Center, and did music therapy work with older adults, as well as disadvantaged children and parents.

I also have my own parent/child music class I host every Thursday September-May. It's never to early to start a music education!

I have been teaching for over four years and now have a studio of more than 70 happy students. Teaching music is my passion, and I love seeing students grow!

I often draw upon my experience from my master's degree in music therapy, which taught me that music can have a profound effect on the human brain and upon cognitive development.  My skills as a music therapist allow me to better understand a student's cognitive strengths and areas for improvement, and to develop individualized teaching strategies which utilize student strengths.

Katherine is an amazing teacher. I can't believe how quickly I went from knowing nothing about the piano to being able to play some of my favorite songs. I would recommend her to anyone and any age range. I also think she teaches singing and I've noticed that she has a wonderful voice!

Katherine is a truly superb teacher, who has great insight into not only the technical aspects of singing, but also the emotional and psychological wellbeing of the singer themselves. When my daughter Charlotte told me she wanted to audition for the school musicale, I did have my doubts. She is incredibly shy and sometimes comes off as quite aloof. I thought perhaps voice lessons would help her to loosen up a bit more than her weekly piano instruction. I found Katherine through a friend whose daughter was also taking voice lessons. At our first meeting, Katherine was a joy to speak with, warm and welcoming towards my daughter, and I had no reservations about the arrangement. After a few short weeks, I noticed a change in Charlotte's confidence and her motivational drive. She was excelling not only in her music, but also in her other areas of study. This trend continued up until the day of the audition. Charlotte had the confidence to audition for the musicale, and she DID earn a role. I am incredibly proud of my daughter and incredibly grateful to her teacher. Katherine has helped my daughter in immeasurable ways, and we look forward to future study with her.

ABOUT ME:
I have over twenty years experience singing. My background in music performance is very rich. I started when I was four in church choir then moved on to starring in the school musicals then to having my own rock band that wo
n a statewide rock band competition and played a major festival.

Following High School, I got accepted in the prestigious Berklee College of Music as a voice principal. There I was able to study with some of the top teachers in the world from Janice Pendarvis to Donna McElroy and others. In addition to taking lessons on voice, I also studied music production and ultimately graduated in 2014 with a degree in Contemporary Writing and Production. Now with Berklee under my belt, I was able to sing, write, and produce professional quality songs.

Following music school, I moved to LA to further my music career. Since being here, I made it to the judges round of America’s Got Talent where I sang in front of 4,000 people including Simon Cowell. I also linked up with Warner Brothers Entertainment as a writer and producer and have finished three contracts for them. One of my originals songs was recently featured on “The Real” on BET four times.
I also had the privilege of traveling the world as a singer with Carnival Cruise Lines singing all genres of music from Motown to rock to the music of today.

Never have I felt more certain about a teacher than with Alex. Not only are his voice skills amazing, but his teaching style is friendly and encouraging, and I felt very comfortable pushing myself to try new techniques in front of him. I grew so much a singer while I was taking Cindy's classes. She is absolutely amazing! It was really awesome to be able to train songs in English and Spanish.

I've been a committed and passionate teacher of voice for 3 years now. My teaching curriculum is based on proper, healthy vocal technique, no matter the style of singing you wish to focus on. I believe that each student has the right dictate what they want to learn and what type of music they want to explore. Each student has different needs and desires they wish to achieve.
