Ear Training, Sightreading, Music Theory, and Harmony are all essential parts of mastering any musical endeavor. Your instrument is merely the voice by which you express your musicianship. HURRY - I only have room for 8 to 10 students!

I've performed on THE VOICE, AMERICAN IDOL, GREASE LIVE! & others. My music has been featured on NBC, ABC, CBS, and domestic & international films. I've coproduced KRISTIN BELL, JEFF DUNHAM, WANG LEEHOM, & LINYU CHUN.

I received undergraduate training at BERKLEE COLLEGE OF MUSIC (BM) in Boston where I studied with Tiger Okoshi, Charles Lewis, John Bavicchi, Richard Davis, & Gregory Fritze, and was a Graduate Assistant at the HODGSON SCHOOL OF MUSIC at UGA (MM) where I was a protege of the late Fred Mills (1935-2009), founding member of the Canadian Brass.

About Jonathan
I studied music therapy and music theory at Temple University from '06-'10. Learned a lot. Then again, I learned even more teaching at a school for kids with learning disabilities and working as a traveling street performer. Once you see the world and work with some unexpected challenges, you learn how to open up and knuckle down at the same time!

I am currently a full-time YouTube Creator, sidelining in cover bands and a solo act. Teaching is a big part of what I do online so I see my work as a private teacher as 'research' for the lessons I create. Although I'm firmly grounded in a classical music training, there's nothing you can ask about that I won't try to figure out. My favorite thing about teaching is using unexpected questions to develop new ideas that I then integrate into my original compositions. Check out my intro to the B
lues Raga video if you want to hear a good story about what I mean.

Recently I've had several articles published by the TakeLessons Blog. Check out my most recent post here.

Jonathan has been a great teacher and excellent influence for Noah. During lessons, and in his practice during the week, Noah is being drawn in by both the challenges and rewards of learning to love and play the violin.

Great lesson today! Johnathon is really good with young kids. We started with learning structured notes, and then he let my son improvise. It was magical. I'm happy to see how Johnathon makes the lesson interaction so much fun!

About Ken
A recent transplant to the Park Slope area, I'm a composer and multi-instrumentalist originally from Raleigh, North Carolina. Prior to receiving my master's degree in composition from Mannes (The New School), I was the lead guitarist in the indie rock band Annuals. As part of this group I signed with two major record labels, appeared on national television programs such as Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and performed globally both on tour and at prominent festivals such as Bonnaroo, Coachella, Glastonbury (England), and Roskilde (Denmark).

I have been teaching private music lessons for twelve years, both freelance and as part of various organizations. My approach to teaching is highly dynamic—I don't use the same method with every student and I have no stylistic prejudices or an agenda to push. I approach each student as an individual
, tailoring lesson plans to suit their personal goals and interests. I have experience playing and teaching an extensive range of styles including pop, rock, jazz, country, metal, and classical. One of my main goals is to foster a sense of musical understanding with every student so that they may learn to combine technical, theoretical, and aural skills into a unified whole.

Most students want to learn to play songs they know and love. To that end, I get students playing the music they want to play right from the beginning, often through personally crafted arrangements of songs/pieces of the student's choosing, specifically tailored to their current skill level. This way, technical and theoretical skills are learned through direct experience with actual music, and only very rarely through rote exercise.

For more advanced players, I offer an array of strategies designed to take your playing to the next level. I find that the most common shortcomings of advanced players are conceptual. The technical skills are there but the level of conceptual and theoretical understanding has hit a wall. Many players find themselves playing the same chord shapes, melodic patterns, and harmonic progressions over and over again. I've had much success over the years in getting advanced students out of this rut and helping open up new pathways for exploration in both improvisation and composition.

I've been playing off and on for 15 years and am mostly self taught. I knew what I wanted to learn but was having trouble figuring it out on my own. In the first lesson Ken was able to zero in on what I want to learn and the best way to go about it. In three lessons I feel that I understand the guitar so much more than I have in the past 15 years of playing. Not only from a technical standpoint, but also in a "feel" sense. On my own I could learn all the scales, chords, and songs I wanted, but Ken has helped me to make sense of everything and use these skills to become a better player all around.

Ken is an incredibly talented musician and teacher and I would recommend him to anyone. He tailors his lessons to meet the individual goals of his students. If I wasn't understanding something, he knew how to explain it in a different way until I understood. He also taught me some techniques for figuring out songs on my own which I really appreciate since I am about move out of NYC. However, if I wasn't leaving I would still be taking lessons with him!

Erin is a dream teacher. She taught piano to both my daughters and voice to my oldest as well. She is very talented, patient, detail-oriented and really challenges students to go above and beyond. She meets students where they are and helps them be successful no matter where they are in their training. We miss having her in Nashville! I would highly recommend her to anyone with children of all ages.

About Monique
Hi there! My name is Monique, and I can't wait to meet you!

I've been teaching since 2010 and have loved helping my students build confidence through music every step of the way! In 2009, I graduated from Kent State University with a degree in Early Childhood Education. I have experience teaching in a large classroom environment and in a one-on-one setting (both online and in person.)

My experience playing piano has been over the course of 15 years, with a mix of classical training and contemporary songwriting. I have had classical recitals and have also performed original songs at shows.

This Fall, I will be attending Berklee College of Music's Online School, where I will be pursuing a second bachelor's degree in songwriting. It is my goal to combine the knowledge and skills I gain from Berklee with my teaching methods, then
share with my students!

My piano lessons are focused on helping beginner students build a strong foundation in music. At any age, my lessons will include a warm and positive environment with creative teaching methods!

I hope to see you in the classroom soon!

Monique taught my 8-year-old daughter introductory piano lessons, and my daughter loved it and loved HER! Monique was so sweet and patient and made piano fun. She assigned homework and things to work on, but she was not too strict and was more than happy to help my daughter try to learn songs she wanted to know. Monique came to our home on a weekly basis and charged a very economical rate. We only stopped lessons when Monique moved away. We highly recommend Monique!!!!

Introduction to Ragtime Piano: 5 Iconic Pieces to Know
Curious about ragtime piano music? Read on as music teacher James W. shares a quick introduction to the genre, and the 5 iconic pieces you should know!  Ragtime piano music is characterized by its syncopated rhythm, which simply means that the accent is unexpectedly placed on the off beat, like the 2nd beat and the 4th beat in a 4/4 time rhythm. This “offbeat” style became famous at the turn of the 20th century with songs written by Scott Joplin like “The Entertainer” and “Maple Leaf Rag”,
What Should I Bring to My First Voice Lesson?

Are You Making the Most of Your Violin Practice?
Gifted musicians don't appear from nowhere fully-formed and ready to take to the concert platform.  For every 45-minute concerto or 90-minute recital you hear, hours of hard work have gone into every note, every phrase, and even how the music is approached, learned, and memorized! It may seem strange to say that proper practice is the most nerve-wracking element of mastering your violin, but if you don't know how to structure the session, how can you ever be sure that you're working on the righ
Do Singers Need Metronomes?
As a vocalist, should you practice singing with a metronome at your side? Read on for St. Augustine, FL teacher Heather L.'s advice...    Metronomes are devices that produce sounds in regular, pre-chosen rhythms. Many years ago, the only metronomes were simple gadgets. Though the first one that's even similar to what we now think of as a "modern" metronome was invented in the 19th century, the kind that most adults are familiar with is a mechanical, wind-up metronome. It makes a s
