Learn to let your character shine on stage or screen! Through improvisation, script analysis and the study of monologue materials, students are introduced to the fundamentals of performance. Special emphasis is placed on exploration of characterization, motivation, and transition. Elements of Alexander Technique will be introduced to help students gain a kinesthetic awareness of self.

Students are able to tailor their lessons to their chosen acting field. If stage acting is the area of study, lessons will focus on proper stage presence, projection, and elements of theatrical acting. If film acting is the area of focus, students will learn to manage micro expressions, the importance of minute changes in body and posture, and hone the ability to "do it exactly the same", and essential skill for film actors.

Corbin was fantastic!! He really knows his stuff. I came to him with a few things to work on and he identified them without me telling him. He also picked up on several other items that we addressed. He had some great techniques to help me identify what I could do better and then had the suggestions for improvement. I am looking forward to working with Corbin again. Excellent experience.

Excited to teach all levels and skill sets.

About Nicholas
I have been an actor for more the 35 years having worked Off-Broadway and Regionally.

I've taught acting for 18 years privately as well as at Brooklyn College, St Frances College, Marymount Manhattan College, and the American Musical and Dramatic Academy.

"Nicholas is patient, insightful, friendly, and gets
results. After working with Nicholas, I felt great
about my auditions, got two callbacks, and landed
a touring job.
I would recommend him to any actor."

*Jonathan M.
Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey

Millbrook Playhouse

I am the Producing Artistic Director of the Hudson Warehouse and have been since its inception in 2004. Known as "The Other Free Shakespeare in the Park," we produce free classical theater in Riverside Park during the summer months and we hav
e an indoor season during the winter months as well.

"Mr. Martin-Smith has been my director, coach and
mentor in productions and the classroom. His patience,
insight and his passion excites students, and makes
them feel safe and supported enough to take risks."

*Joseph H.

*** Teaching Methods ***
I foster a safe, relaxed and engaging environment to explore truthful human behavior on stage.

The objective is 'the truth' to which end there is no one technique. Actors are encouraged to find their own tools and to draw from elements of different practices to discover a technique that works best for them as individuals.

I studied the methods of Constantin Stanislavski for acting with Sergei Pomerov of the Moscow Circus Theater. I am classically trained as well.

I work primarily as a guide to help navigate the way and to interpret ‘the signs.' I teach the lesson in the moment and address the challenges of both the beginner and the experienced actor.

***Classical Work***
My basic approach to classical work focuses primarily on the connection of the breath with the feeling on the word.

This is the foundation on which you can then build. From the ‘words’ to the ‘thoughts’ to entire ‘passages’ of text, as you work and explore, the richness of the playwright’s words comes to life. Your own unique emotional life is allowed to come through the text and you are able to fully embody the role.

*** Teaching Levels and Focuses ***
*Beginning Actors
-Work With Classical Text.
-Vocal Work.
-"Moment to Moment" Work.
-"Sense Memory" Work.

*Experienced Actors
-In depth Classical Text Analysis.
-Connecting to the Text.
-Audition Technique
-Monologue Coaching

I was always afraid I couldn't learn Shakespeare, but Nicholas explained the intent on the word, the intent on the line. Soon, I was so caught up in the meaning of the lines and the story I was telling in that moment that I was able to engage in the role, smoothly, without worrying that I was performing Shakespeare. He broke it down so I could understand it, and then feel confident doing it. Highly recommend!

Nicholas knows Shakespeare and classical work. He really works with the text and helps an actor really understand the emotions in the scene, through the text. I've gotten so much out of his teaching and so have many of my friends. If you have an audition or play coming up, he's the one to get you ready for it! My friend nailed his audition, got the gig, all through his work with Nicholas. I've learned so much as an actor from Nicholas.

All levels of acting and directing for the stage and/or screen taught. From a video presentation for your boss to the community stage, all the way to that professional audition.

About Larry
***My Takelessons Blog Posts:***
http://takelessons.com/blog/acting-in-famous-Shakespeare-plays
http://takelessons.com/blog/how-to-have-stage-presence

My name is Larry, and I was born and raised in Chicago and now call the Phoenix, AZ metro area home. I have two Master's Degrees in Education (Higher Ed. and Teaching and Learning with Technology), and am working on another M.A. currently in History. I have a tutoring business of my own, working with excellent education partners like Takelessons.

My tutoring business is geared towards middle, high school, and college students, and my specialization is geared in three arenas:

1) The Humanities: History (U.S., European, Oriental, and World), English, Literature (with a special passion for all things Shakespeare), and Social Studies (including American Government and Political Sci
ence).

2) Papers: Research papers (and how to do the research for them), essays, creative writing - everything to do with papers you ever wanted to know.

3) Drama (the Theatre kind of drama, not life drama): Acting, directing, staging, analysis, including the aforementioned Will Shakespeare.

***My Promise to You***

I will treat you like an individual - that means that we'll find out how YOU learn best, and we'll work that way. I don't teach "to the test", I don't teach memorization. I teach by asking and answering questions, as well as providing information.

***My Expectation of You***

That you will come with an open mind, come with questions, come with not just the willingness to learn and have fun, but the expectation to do both.

***Lesson Details***

*The Humanities*
The reason so many people go screaming into the night when confronted with lessons in things like history, or government, or English for that matter, are all the names and dates to memorize. I don't teach that way. We begin with things you want (or need) to know. From there, we cover how those things affected other things, It's a huge world out there, and how we got here from where we started is a wonderful and complicated trip. History doesn't happen in a vacuum, and we learn who we are by knowing where we come from.

*Papers*
Obviously I won't write your paper for you, but I will show you how and where to start your research (and how to sort it as well). I will also proof-read for grammar and/or organizational errors and show you how to structure it in general terms.

*Drama*
I have acted, I have directed. From the community to professional levels. We will talk about character creation, about staging, about working with your director as well as your fellow actors. We will mostly brainstorm, and you will be able to experiment in vision as well as technique.

I have taught acting classes for 5 years now.

Depending on your needs, I would customize each lesson to your goals. Every actress/actor has an ultimate goal, and we would try to achieve that by creating an overall plan.

My goal is to get you ready to get in front of casting. Depending on your acting skill level and experience, we will customize the lessons for your needs

About Drea
I have been in the creative industry since I was a child. I have been singing since I came out of the womb! And doing photography since high school. I am now in front and behind the camera as an actress/on camera host, and I am a professional photographer/videographer. I have behind the camera for companies such as VH1, MTV, Fuse TV, and the New York Post. In front of the camera, you have probably seen me in films such as Relativity Media's, "Act of Valor," "Baby Mama" (Opp Tina Fey/Sigourney Weaver), and Chris Rock's "I Think I Love my Wife." My experience both in front and behind the camera compliments each other as I understand what is needed for both positions. I try to keep my lessons informative and fun! -- Anything can be achieved if you take your time and you really want it.

Acting is all about bringing your personal experiences to the character. I work in-depth with students on finding specific, personal, and important choices to make as a character and using their vocal range and tonality to influence their characters. In addition to this deeper work, I also work to give students the fundamentals; vocabulary, tactics, intention, performer etiquette. These classes are for students 13-30. (Some younger performers may want to begin in my child acting courses and build up to these.)

About Joy
My name is Joy Weir and I have been involved in theatre and acting for the last decade. I have been teaching acting and theatrical skills to children as well as coaching friends and colleagues for even longer. I am available for group classes as well, please contact me for info and rates.

As a teaching artist for children I have worked with Yes! And... Collaborative Arts, ASAP Drama, Rehoboth Summer Children's Theatre, Theatre Horizon, White Pines Productions, and I even began my own curriculum at the Lansdowne YMCA. I worked with Joy during her directed production of "dtf" as a part of Drexel University's Director's Lab performance during fall of 2016. Joy was an absolute blast to work with and was extremely encouraging during the course of our rehearsals leading up to the performance. She really helped my scene partner and I to explore our characters on a much deeper level than what was proactively displayed on stage. I felt that it helped me immensely as an actor during the show as I felt much more comfortable in my position on stage and more "in-tune" with my character. Joy is a wonderful director who puts in maximum effort for directing and takes a personal and effective approach to actor preparation for her productions!

Joy helped me prepare monologues countless times. She had a really great sense of getting right to the meat of things. " why is your character doing this..?", " who are they talking to?" " what's the subtext?" " what is the underlying need?" These are all questions she's helped me sort out. She's also great at telling you what is playing/working/reading in terms of actor choices.
