Bassoon:
A woodwind instrument in the double reed family that typically plays music written in the bass and tenor clefs, and occasionally the treble. Appearing in its modern form in the 19th century, the bassoon figures prominently in orchestral, concert band, and chamber music literature. The bassoon is a non-transposing instrument known for its distinctive tone colour, wide range, variety of character and agility. Listeners often compare its warm, dark, reedy timbre to that of a male baritone voice. Someone who plays the bassoon is called a bassoonist. The lessons will consist of breathing and finger techniques, learning notes and rhythms and how to read. Very quickly songs will be incorporated and as the student progresses we will work on learning scales and how to solo.

This teacher misrepresented her ability to teach the C system chromatic button accordion. I don't believe that she has ever played one. I asked her before purchasing a set of classes if she knew this instrument and was competent to teach it, and she said she was.

She didn't have one, so she could never demonstrate anything I asked about. She didn't know the key layout. She didn't know the conventions for numbering fingers. She didn't know the basic home key scale pattern.

I waited until I'd finished four classes with my new teacher before writing this so I'd have a good basis for comparison. He is immensely better at teaching this than she was. It further convinced me that she never should have represented herself as competent to teach this particular instrument.

I'm a professional, classically trained bassoonist that plays with orchestras, chamber ensembles, and rock bands. I've been teaching private lessons for over 15 years and I'm available to work with students at any age and skill level including beginners, intermediate students who want to improve their skills (or are picking up the bassoon after time away), as well as advanced students looking for audition and performance coaching. Lessons with me are always positive, supportive, and tailored to each individual's goals and needs.

My method of teaching is motivating and rewarding, and my students always succeed on their scale tests, Region and All State auditions, and college auditions. We can work on major and minor scales, beginner to advanced etudes, solo literature, audition etudes, orchestral excerpts, contemporary music and extended techniques, music theory, and more.

Time flies so quick. I was looking back at TakeLessons.com and realized that my son had his first bassoon lesson with Kristilyn on Oct 8 2017. Now he is a high school senior and planning to pursue his music education at the college – that is a testimony to Kristilyn’s contribution.

I am prepared to teach at all levels from beginner to collegiate and for a wide range of lesson lengths (For any lengths not posted on TakeLessons, I am available for individual inquiries). I am an experienced teacher and performer with two musical degrees, a Master's degree in Bassoon Performance from Arizona State University and a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from University of New Hampshire. I'm engaged with the process of teaching bassoon students from the beginner level up to the advanced level. I make sure to make them aware of the importance of proper cleaning and care for their bassoons. I'm a patient teacher and know that everyone learns differently and at different speeds. I like to play duets with the students to make the lessons fun. I'm knowledgeable about bassoon solo pieces and orchestral repertoire and am able to help to help students prepare for solo contests. I emphasize the development of technique through slow scales and gradually expand the range. I'm able to add a little humor in the lessons to make the lessons fun. I view myself as a student in the process of teaching, too. I'm also engaged with teaching students proper embouchure, breath support and talk to them about reeds and am able to teach them reed making and adjustment as they become more advanced. In addition to bassoon I have experience playing Bb Clarinet and am able to offer ...

I am a double reed (oboe and bassoon) specialist and have played both for over 16 years. My instrument of choice was bassoon in college and I continue to play for community orchestras. I tutor the double reed students at Hughson High School and Ross Middle School during the school year. Proper bassoon embouchure, technique and selection and adjustment of reeds is something most public school teachers overlook. Trust a specialist!

I teach oboe primarily through the tried and true Rubank method and the Ferling studies. Students will learn how to properly care for the instrument, how to read music, music theory, instrument technique, practice techniques, ear training (how to play by ear), reed adjustment, and repertoire. I also employ custom exercises specifically for oboe to help my students progress the fastest.

Kyle is a great piano teacher! He is very patient with my 12-year old son. Just yesterday he referred to him as “fun Kyle” because he teaches him small songs on the side that he can show friends and family or are for upcoming holidays. He’s always punctual and respectful of our family and home. I’m grateful to have found him!

"My son has been taking lessons from Kristilyn for about 6 months now and she has been amazing. My 16 year old is always over scheduled and Kristilyn has been more than willing to work around his schedule when the need has arisen. She has also helped him choose appropriate music for several auditions and practice for the auditions. She has stretched his limits on the bassoon with out frustrating him. We highly recommend Kristilyn as an instructor."

"Galina has been working with our 8th grade son on bassoon for a year and he loves it! She is a kind, generous, and knowledgeable teacher. She has patiently prepared him for auditions, improving his technique and musicality, but she also makes lessons fun by playing duets with him. She is also teaching him to make reeds. And she is very easy to work with in scheduling, and has seamlessly moved to remote lessons in the current situation. We are lucky to have found her as a teacher."
